I wonder if some of it comes from other people harassing them about their decision, which makes them become defensive over it. As a similar thing, you wouldn't believe how much crap I get for owning an iPhone as an engineer. Apparently, you're only allowed to own an Android device if you're technically oriented. Let's ignore that I was on AT&T back when it was Cingular, and AT&T was pretty much just iPhone if you wanted a good phone. But I start getting really irked when people give me crap about it for dumb reasons.

Anyway, I own all three next-gen (current-gen?) consoles. I just buy whatever games I want to play... and usually never play them. ;)

I hate Apple products myself and I give my friends crap about their iphone but it's all in fun. It honestly doesn't matter in the least.

Do the previous headsets (that use a 3.5mm jack) get sound from the controller of the 360? If so, MS is selling some bullshit. If not, the headset is working exactly as intended and you can't expect additional functionality.

They can direct audio through the controller. There is zero reason they couldn't have an adapter that allowed stereo sound from it.

What is so hard about that concept to you?

There are studies that link people's view of themselves are related to the views of the brand image of what they like. It is pretty funny when people (especially, technically oriented people) cry about the iPhone. I remember when the iPhone came out and it was leaps and bounds ahead of anything at the time. I, too, was on Cingular before it was AT&T. Now, since Android is "open" people seem to think it is the technical brand to have. Yet, all they do is complain about it (at least, those whom I even bother to ask). MBPs are even better. The "technical" people will cry about how overpriced they are, yet for the specs, you cannot get a comparable laptop in every category except build quality.

They already have improved it. If you're going to bitch that they are giving you the option to retro fit your existing peripheral into the controller with the exact same functionality you got before because it doesn't, somehow, enhance it beyond it's original capacity; you're a moron.

Are you also upset that they sell adapters to connect your old, 8-bit consoles to new HDTVs and they don't play in 1080p?

I'm not upset about anything. I don't own an XB1 or a specially purchased headset for 360. It's a comment about your attitude in general. Direct your anger and insults elsewhere.

I'm not a huge fan of Mac computers mostly because I've never really gotten used to OS X. It's pretty much the same reason why I don't care about Android; iOS suits my needs. So, in turn, why do I want to discard Windows when it does what I want? :p

I wonder if it has to relate to the satisfaction and overall investment with the brand. For example, I'm probably not going to care if you crap all over my use of BiC mechanical pencils (yes, I do use them :p). They're cheap and I have little to no investment when it's $3 for a huge pack. However, when you factor in the price of a gaming console with any peripherals and games, it can be a pretty big thing... especially if you're a kid with little to no income. I guess that the loyalty can build up over time... especially when they do stuff to create a presence like gamer profiles.

The best part is I'm pretty sure none of the people that give me crap for owning an iPhone have ever even flashed a custom image on their phone. It's almost a reverse hipster thing?

Also signed up. I hope I get in the beta just so I can use it as a demo. I love that this game is getting such hype but I don't know if it's my type of FPS. It looks extremely fast paced, which isn't typically my cup of tea.

The best thing about it is you never have to say "man I need to buy a ps4 (or an xb1) for that game". Or if there is a superior version or some special content you want for a specific title, you dont have to settle.

For some of us, there's just nothing that the competing console has for us. I'm not the adventure type of person, so Uncharted doesn't do it for me. Killzone would interest me if the whole story wasn't missing from the console (and Shadow Fall got better reviews). Sony just has nothing enticing for me, but I'm likely in the minority.

Even then, I think I'd rather spend the $400+ on 6 new games on Xbox or PC than a PS4.

I had to do it on my phone. It wasn't working at first...some Ajax or java script issue for mobile browsers but after checking and unchecking the boxes the "apply" finally became clickable.

So, wired from headset to controller but controller still remains wireless.

Yes. The controllers are using Wifi Direct rather than whatever they were using prior, which allows for more bandwidth and the ability to have more than voice sound passed through. The argument about this was that controllers made for the 360 that use the 3.5mm input jack on the controller don't support anything other than voice sound on the Xbox One with the MS adapter, regardless of the fact they didn't support anything other than voice sound on the Xbox 360.

No 360 controllers work on the xb1 and the headsets on 360 use 2.5mm.

Also you are forgetting that nearly every 3rd party headset supports game audio as well on the 360. With the new xb1 controller port it seems a waste to make people run wires across the floor when clearly it isn't necessary. People with wireless headsets can't even use those. At least people on the ps4 can use some of their old headsets, even wireless. Even using this adapter and optical from the console you can't get Dolby digital, just stereo anyway since the Dolby digital update hasn't arrived yet.

The whole issue is that a quality headset is not cheap and I can see buying new controllers that have different methods to connect to the console etc. A headset uses pretty standard connections these days.

Do the 3rd party headsets that connect to the 2.5mm jack (thanks for the correction) support game audio? I don't think they do. I've only used wireless headsets on the 360 (other than the official junk wired headset).

Also, MS isn't exactly setting a precedent of peripherals not being supported on the next generation of console. That has happened since consoles began. Yes, it sucks for people who spent a lot on headsets for the 360, but it sucks just as bad as guys who bought extra parts for their 2005 Mustangs and the parts don't work on their 2014 model.

The only justifiable outrage, IMO, is the price. It is pretty expensive for what is probably > $5 in parts.

I just made a trade and had to drive 30 min but it was worth it. I traded my kid's ps4 and Ghosts for a One and Ghosts.

They did but required optical or rca stereo out to a mixamp of some sort like the astro a40. Then the chat wire went to the controller. MS could have made it a simpler connection with a stereo out from the controller with this adapter since there is no Dolby digital support yet anyway.

It sounds like the ones that supported game audio were wireless for that and wired to the controller for the voice chat. Thus, they were completely separate channels. And this adpater only allows for the voice portion of the channel to connect.

Albert Penello says that headsets that mix the audio through one connector like a smartphone headset will also work for game and chat. So it appears you can run another adapter on top and mix the streams outside the controller. You just can't have the controller do it for you.

To me it seems like they are requiring all headsets that connect directly to the controller and use the controller's audio capability directly to be officially licensed. It is all confusing because as far as I know those smartphone headsets use 3.5mm and this adapter is supposed to be for 2.5mm 360 headsets.

(Update, Feb. 12): While the adapter's original announcement vaguely indicated that players could "add game audio by connecting directly to your console or TV," Microsoft has now clarified that any stereo headset with a 3.5mm plug will be able to receive stereo game audio through the controller adapter. However, to hear in-game audio on headsets designed for the Xbox 360, you'll need to connect them to your TV or console, as per the original description.
