I'm really confused as to why you think that. TiVo has been around for over a decade, and it has done EXACTLY THAT. As another example, I use a Ceton InfiniTV 6 ETH on my home network that allows me to stream up to six channels to any PC on my network. Any one of my WMC machines can use up to four at a time (WMC limitation).
Also, the X1 is completely incapable of being a DVR unless you're on an IPTV-based service. The reason is that it lacks a QAM tuner, but to be fair, Microsoft could add support for external tuners via adding Media Center Extender capability back or selling a dedicated QAM tuner add-on -- probably a USB unit like the Ceton InfiniTV 4 USB. I'm pretty sure the XBOX 360 can also use my Ceton InfiniTV 6 ETH via its Media Center Extender capability.
