Sony really presented a well thought out platform from a design perspective, but things like no PSN carryover is dissappointing. This continues to be the one area where the PC differentiates: the PC/OS is a platform, not your model of your PC.

The Jaguar cores are solid processors. A developer at B3D had done some testing on Bobcat versus the PPEs in the Xbox 360 and PPE in Cell and from an IPC perspective his testing showed a 4x edge for Bobcat (0.8 IPC for Bobcat versus 0.2 for Xenon). Sure, they are half the frequency but they are easier to use, fewer "gotchas," more efficient, and there are nearly 2.5x as many in the box. True, they are small and sip power (hence the question why not more?) but it seems well balances against the 18 CU GPU.

Even if the CPU cores were deemed dissappointing 8GB of fast GDDR5 and an up-to-date gamer class GPU (18CUs @ 800MHz is about the ballpark for a Pitcairn GCN 7850) are both deserving of thumbs up. That, and a HDD standard and standard USB and BT, really round out a nice machine.

As a PC guy pairing that CPU with a high end gpu would be a severe bottleneck. Granted this is a console and will be highly optimized and comparing PC to consoles is apples to oranges.

Also unless the dev tools are well optimized to use 8 cores for various applications no game maker will take the time to fully utilize it. I do like the 8 gig of ram though.

Since both the PS4 and the new Xbox are supposed to have similar architectures, this should almost force devs to use the extra cores but that probably won't happen fully for at least a year or two after release.

Pretend you didn't hear the social media part and you will see the PS4 will be above the Xbox in hardware capabilities; hence the PS4 gives you the best console to play kick ass video games for this gen. Whats disappointing about that? These side gimmicks are Xbox's only way to surpass the PS4 because hardware alone its looking like the PS4 will have it beat.

Calm down there Sony guy, let's at least wait until Microsoft announces their console before we get all fanboy up in this piece.

Probably. Lack of an IR sensor makes it useless as a media center. Upgrading my Harmony One because Sony is too fucking stupid to put an IR sensor in their machine is unacceptable.

My PS3 also does not come with an IR sensor but it works with my Logitech 550 and a dongle.

:hmm:

The best part about the fanboy comments like those are they never remember Sony normally promises a bunch of stuff they end up cutting out. Emotion chips, "live" gameplay that turned out to be cut scenes. It's almost like a Sony tradition that they release a ton of "here's what we're thinking about doing" way before they release what they are doing.

Console comes out in 10 months with developers that have dev units in hand. It's a done deal as far as I can tell.

Ugh, I hate those stupid Dualshock controllers. They worked fine when I was 14, but now at 31 the DS3 actually causes cramping and pain, while the Xbox controller fits my hand better.

I'm praying somebody will release a good third-party Xbox-style controller for the PS4, though since there's not even one for the PS3, I won't get my hopes up.

This is true. We heard about cross play between the Vita and a console before, so I can see why people are skeptical of them.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that the vita and ps3 did cross play did they not?

They did, but it was limited to a handful of games and the results in my experience with it was less than satisfactory. It's my understanding that the PS4 will support it with every single game, although I don't believe that's been explicitly said, only implied.

I'm talking about features aside - pure computing power. Not features that can be announced and then disappear. That was the gist of the post as the OP was complaining - use-less features he didn't care for. Based on both consoles Dev kits and the fact that Sony's matches their rumored specs I'm working under the assumption the Xbox 720 will match its rumored specs (I know thats a leap but its what we have to work with her). The rumored specs of the 720 vs the known specs of the PS4 show the PS4 as having better hardware capabilities. Re-reading my post it does come off a lot more fan-boyish then intended. I just wanted to point out (and I've seen it in a lot of media outlets today) that people keep focusing on all of those gimmicky features rather than the fact that the PS4 will be a very powerful and easy to develop for console.

I doubt the PS4 will be easier to dev for than the nextbox, microsoft own at development tools.

If the rumours are correct the ps4 will have the edge in terms of hardware.

Microsoft could choose to launch at half the cost of the PS4 tho.

No way Microsoft will let ps4 be more powerful. Can't they just use the same or similar parts to what they were planning, slightly upgrade them and then delay the launch?

It's time we finally put this used game fear to bed. I predicted with many that the consoles would not have limitations on used games. Customers will hate them. Sony has said it won't block them--I chalk any strange answer by that Sony guy as a language barrier.

What developer has said they want to see the end of used games? We need to stop worrying about this.

Surely the hardware for the next xbox is long since locked in and production will occur soon if not already taking place; they won't change hardware. if it turns out that what they have is inferior hugely to the ps4 they'll have to respond in other ways: price or software

Keep in mind that the console that has touted itself to be "most powerful" in a "generation" hasn't sold the most units since the SNES.
