So I downloaded mario 64, just to see the improvement. I always planned on playing through it again, but itll have to wait until after I'm finished with the wii launch games.
Anyways, it looks absolutely fantastic in 480p. MUCH better than n64. It isn't upscaled, it's actually rendered at the higher resolution. Not sure if the framerate is higher - I think it might be. Its definitely 30fps, rock solid. Not a single frame dropped or slowdown, and I remember that happening from time to time. Could just be a while since I've played it, but the music seemed clearer than I ever remembered it. It controlled well with a wavebird. But the download took FOREVER. It's a 20mb file, and took 10 minutes to download on a 15mbit connection. I know nintendo is having bandwidth problems, but damn it took long...compounded by the fact that you can't do anything while its downloading, and it has the MOST ANNOYING progress bar in the world.
Mario runs across the screen, slowly collecting coins. I *think* the coins are incoming data. There are three bricks overhead. He smashes them as progress is made. When its done, he'll start pumping coins out of the third block, over and over. You remember those blocks in super mario bros where you could knock 10 coins out of them? Imagine mario rhythmically knocking coin after coin out of this block, until you finally press the button. The sound it made was like an alarm clock from hell.
Now for some gripes about the Wii in general. Many of these I hope will be changed through updates:
You can't save gamecube saves to the internal memory, you need a GC memory card. It's flat out ugly to see this sleek white console with a little grey card sticking out it's side.
You can't tweak the pointer. Just above or below screen. Zelda lets you tweak it a bit more finely, but it should be built into the system. Every TV is different, and I'd like the opportunity to tweak it so I can have it point DIRECTLY at what I'm pointing at - but that would confuse lots of people. I'm sure they could do it - hell, they had it pixel perfect with the super scope 15 years ago.
Mii's are cool, but why can I only have one version? Sometimes I'd like a grin, sometimes I wear glasses etc - should be able to make variations on your Miis, and yet keep it as the same character for record keeping. There also isnt enough options - half the body parts look stupid, and you cant change clothes.
Virtual console :
Its lacking in games. There arent enough games now, although its launch...but they are coming out at a very slow rate. 10 per month? The NES, MSX, Sega, TG16, SNES, N64 libraries combined is THOUSANDS of games. At this rate, it'll be years before we see our personal favorites pop up.
It's also lacking graphically. N64 games look better than they ever have. But everything else? Looks like crap. I'm all for faithful reproductions, but do we REALLY need to reproduce the slowdowns, flicker and pixelation? Any decent modern emulator does away with these, and can filter/upscale the 2d graphics to look much better. Hopefully, that'll be part of the "updates" they do...updating the emulation code. It also stretches by default...but not really. It just puts out the full image - your TV is stretching it. I wished it could squeeze it for you, but then you'd lose resolution...I guess? Since NES games are running at 240x180 anyway, they could have easily done it for you.
It's slow as all hell. Maybe it's just growing pains, but 5 minutes into a 20mb download that isnt nearly done is getting irritating - and it took me 10 minutes to finally begin the download anyway.
And on top of that, it's too expensive. I *might* pay 8 bucks for a SNES game, if they upgraded it, and it was a long time favorite, or a hit I missed out on. A lot of people might pay 8 bucks for a game they've never played. But that rate is WAY too high for the nostalgic gamer....at the very least, they should offer a bulk discount, like double the points if you drop $50-100 at a clip, etc, so those who want to collect older games can do so, and the once in a while gamers can have their cake too.
I'm using a GC controller, but I have a question. Playing a NES game with the classic controller - are the B and A buttons mapped to B and A, or to Y and B? If it's mapped to B and A, thats just retarded.
But honestly, all the gripes I have are minor. It's honestly the most fun I've had playing video games in years. You've never played games like these before...the control is EVERYTHING. Wii sports is just brilliant - thats their most important franchise right now, and they need to come out with new ones often. I just don't agree with the critics on this one - sure, its a simple game, but its so new and innovative I've probably played it for 30 hours, and I'm not even close to tired of it. Its completely groundbreaking. It deserves a 10/10, and is officially the best pack in game in all history. And although the execution is terrible, the idea of the virtual console is also awesome. This is the real next gen - an actual change in how we play games, and who we play games with. And it might be graphically lacking in the end, but if I want graphics, I'll buy a 360.
