Most definitely buried. Right-click on the Nvidia applet in the system tray, choose Nview Desktop Manager and nView Properties. Choose the Hotkeys tab and click the plus sign to expand Display Mode. When you find the function you want to assign (Cycle HDTV formats might help your other problem), click on it and press the Add button. Then assign the keystroke and choose OK.

For remembering 1080i, you might try fiddling with the nView profiles but I'm pretty much a complete newb when it comes to this stuff.

Case mods can be cool, but so can the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" maxim. Unless you have noticed a specific problem, I'd say don't tempt the fates by FIDdling with stuff that might break the warranty.

Zalman Coolers.

I am debating between the 7000b-cu and the 7700-cu for this board.

First of all any thoughts/experience on the heavy weight slightly warping this board (I've heard of such cases, the 7700-cu is more than 2 pounds).

Also can someone who already has either of these coolers tell me how much clearance there is between the heatsink and the ram cause from the first post I understand that it actually sits over the first slot and I wanna know if it will fit with ram that has a heatspreader.

Thanks alot!

I have the 7700AlCu. The clearance on RAM is fine. I am able to remove/install all slots no problem. I'm using Corsair XMS with heat spreader. You need to tilt the RAM a little when you are installing/removing memory in slot 1.

Anyway, I think the fan come with Zalman is loud, even with lowest setting, so I replace it with a quieter one (NEXUS 120mm). I think if you are noise sensitive (like me), it might be better off buying something else like Thermalright XP-90 or XP-120 and pick the quiet fan yourself. According to silentPCReview.com, the performance is better than Zalman and easier to install.

If you don't mind about the noise, Zalman is fine. It also comes with speed controller.

Found a complete review of the K8NGM2-FID

On Digital Daily.com, a russian site. Highlights:

Pros:

Good stability;
Support for SerialATA II (4 SATA II channels; RAID);
Integrated Gigabit LAN controller;
Integrated video core and support for external video card;
8-channel integrated audio;
Support for Firewire (2 ports).

Cons:

Low performance with an external video card. ????

The board's specific features:

Very low overclocking results
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am wondering about the low-performance with additionnal video card. This seems hard to explain.

Digital Daily.com : "Now on to the practical overclocking. The board demonstrated very poor results: the maximum stable HTT speed = 207 MHz."

ya right. I guess he doesn't read this thread, LOL 270 - 270 - 2700
venice2700mhz.PNG

This is at "load defaults" settings on everything, just FSB changed to 270. No tweaking or extra volts on anything, except turn spread spectrum junk off.

I should drop the RAM multiplier down a bit and see how fast the board really goes :)

Another review on K8NGM2-FID:

MSI K8NGM2-FID (GeForce 6150 + nForce 430) @HardwareZone.community
Overclocking is practically non-existent on the board due to the lack of a CPU multiplier selector, so it doesn't even matter if you have a locked or unlocked processor. The board doesn't even have any CPU and chipset voltage options as well. With a 2.2GHz Athlon 64 3500+ that is already running on an 11x multiplier, our maximum stable FSB overclock came in at 210MHz. This result is a far cry from the 280MHz achieved from the last two GeForce 6150/6100 motherboards we've tested, Gigabyte's GA-K8N51GMF-9 and the WinFast 6150K8MA-8EKRS. (page 2)
It is completely beyond my understanding how such a low result the reviewer obtained.

I was getting BSOD (blue screen of death) crashes while playing video with on board video. I tried different forceware versions, different video ram settings. running at stock speed, different player software. But what finally cleared it up was turning off cool n quiet. Haven't had a BSOD since (a couple of weeks now)

Note that I'm pushing the system pretty hard: I'm either playing HD video or doing some CPU intensive video processing with ffdshow. My experience doesn't mean there's a problem with C n Q per se, but that it probably interacting badly with something else in my system and/or software. Point is, if you're tearing your hair out over mysterious crashes, try turning off C n Q.

Hmmm. I'm going to try this tonite. I have a nagging video problem that could be related to CnQ. Every so often, my MCE screen goes blank after I play an HD video. It happened after a clip was played and even the built-in calibration video in the Settings area, the video with 2 guys/2 gals playing pool. Anyway, the machine is mostly nonfunctional, except that I can hit the Windows key on the kb and the bottom taskbar pops up, but nothing else happens. I thought it might be a problem caused by the Forceware mce extension driver (version 77.79) since I couldn't get a DVD window to pop up when you change De-interlacing or VRM mode. Also this is very confusing about the forceware versions. 77.79 sounds like an old version. But when you go to the nvidia MCE extensions pg, it points to 77.79 -- not 81.98, not 84.21, and no explanation for any of this $&%#. Does anyone know about this?
NVIDIA Media Center Extensions

Update: I tried turning off CnQ - and yes indeed, that was the culprit! It was also causing TV to stutter every 10 seconds or so. Sort of like a build up, then TV would catchup and do a FF of the video. Strange. Any fix for this?

Hi folks,

I have the "other" version of this board - the K8NGM2-NBP, coutesy of this year's AMD Tech Tour bundle.

Building was effortless and worked first time. I could access the BIOS with just Win XP installed but after installing Vista CTP on the 2nd partition, I can no longer get into the BIOS. <DEL> is ignored - I guess this is a feature of Vista's new BIOS management?? Does anyone know how to get into the BIOS when the Vista boot manager is installed?

(I am using a Microsoft wireless USB keyboard if that makes a difference).
Thanks - Roger

Renethx - thanks for finding the time and making the effort to manage such an outstanding forum. Thanks also to the many others who have shared your installation
experiences or expertise. It has all come together to make this a no brainer as to which
socket 939 MB to buy. Especially for a novice like myself.

I've built one PC an intel box and decided to try an AMD build for the 2nd go round.
Received my K8NGM2-FID in the mail today. Still waiting for the venice 3200+ to arive.

In the meantime I'm preparing for the installation. I've read through all 43 ages of the forum and I've begin downloading everything specified on the !st page
9. Installing Windows

Step 6, says to install DirectX 9.0c
Do I have to pre download that? Won't that automatically come in as part of my Winxp SP2 install or possibly get updated when I do the MSupdate thing. I checked the MS download site and found a link for:
DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtime
is that the file I need> suprised if that's so, seems kind of old published date is 8/4/204

LouSly,

I guess DirectX 9.0c is included in the Windows XP SP2 CD, but I don't know if it is installed automatically. Somebody else who installed WinXP with the SP2 CD may answer this question. If you want to check the version number of DirectX in your system, use dxdiag.exe located in C:\Windows\system32.

HDD os problem
WD 3000JB instalation problem

I am trting to build a new PC with MSI K8NGM2-FID but can not install WinXP Pro SP2 on WD 3000JB. After coping files,

after rebuting, it gives me a blue screen with bunch of text aboyr error: MACHINE.....

WHEN I USE MY OLD WD 160Gb DRIVE, I DO NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEM - THIS MASAGE WAS SENT FROM IT!?

I TESTED AND PARTITIONED WD 3000JB WITH WD SW (4 PARTITIONS: C, PAGE, ATIW BACKUP, AND STORAGE).

Is it an incompability, faulty HDD , or I am missing somthing?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Just a wild guess.

See the first post of this thread. Search for "Maxtor". There are some compatilbility issues that need jumper change.

This might also applies to your WD too.

I checked, nothing about it, those are SATA drives, mine is IDE.

Any other suggestions?

Hi. I already have an Opteron 165 and it can get to 2.4 gigs on a little over stock volts. Probably 2.3 on stock, and I was wondering would the foxconn board you recommended for ocing be able to get 265-270 fsb speeds easily?
Also, do you think the 200 mhz increase I would get by maxing out the cpu would be worth it to get a board with worse peripherals and more issues? What are your thoughts about what I should do with my opteron 165? O and the onboard graphics don't matter to me. I have a 7900 gt ready to go. So if there's a board thats better in everything, but has worse onboard graphics let me know.
O one last thing, is the MSI board like guarenteed to hit 250 mhz? If not what are the chances that i get one that can?

I finally fixed my S3 resume problem using my USB devices. I couldn't get the computer to some out of S3 using my infared receiver, which was kind of a pain.

By inserting the registry key...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\usb
"USBBIOSx"=DWORD:00000000

as described in this Microsoft thread...

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=841858

I was able to get the S3 resume working using my remote control... finally I can keep my lazy ass on the couch!

I know a few other users had problems with this. Oddly enough under the device manager USB Root Hub Properties it still has the option "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standy." greyed out. I'm using BIOS 3.2 if it helps anyone.

I am trying to set up Raid on the K8NGM2-FID with 2 WD Raptor X's and my problem is that I can configure the raid in bios but when I hit F10 to configure the array, I can select the drives for the array and chose to stripe the drives. When I've finished setting that up and exit out to the main screen it shows the array but I am unable to set the boot option for the array. the "" boot option at the bottom of the screen is grayed out so I'm at a loss as to what I'm doing wrong. I know there's nothing wrong with the drives because I was successfully running these drives in Raid 0 on my Shuttle SN25P. I'm also using a Plextor PX-716SA DVD-RW plugged into the SATA 3 connector. The bios of my MB is 3.20. Can anyone give me a clue as to what is causing this problem?

taco1435,

Max possible frequency of Opteron 165 with the K8NGM2-FID is 2.25GHz (= 9 x 250MHz). If you already have Opteron 165, you'd better buy Foxconn 6150K8MA-8EKRS with which max possible frequency of Opteron 165 is 2.70GHz (9 x 300MHz). As I have never used it, I can't speak of the actual overclockability. There is a good thread on this topic:

Foxconn 6100/6150K8MA-8KRS Overclocking stories?? in Hard|Forum.

My all three MSI boards run at 250MHz stably. It seems that most user's MSI boards also run at 250MHz with no problem.

A couple qustions,

Does the video memory option change performance much from 64mb to 128mb? and does the higher setting affect o/c stability at all?

priming right now A64 3200+ at 250x10, mem (kingston hyperx 4000 at 166mhz (cpu-z reports the ram at pc3200 and if i try 183mhz it wont post, on default voltage - annoying, is my ram wrong?)

Also, anyone found a place with the SPDIF brackets in us or canada lately? or want to build me one, I'll pay $15 shipped to canada for one.

Thanks

Hey, how come you only recommend the Foxconn for overclocking? What makes it better than the Tforce6100-939 or DFI? Is it just because your only comparing 6150 boards?

taco1435,

I mean that Foxconn 6150K8MA-8EKRS has the best overclocking options among the GeForce 6150 boards.
