Any special steps to install Vista on this motherboard?, because my installations keeps stalling.

Booted directly off the DVD. I installed it to a PATA drive so no IDE driver was necessary. This was the 64-bit version (32-bit should be the same). I had to hook up a 21" P1110 monitor since the install would bluescreen and fail connected to my TV (DVI->HDMI).

Here is my 2 cents:

FID was the protoype board for the 6150/430 chipset. There are currently 4 offerings: ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, and Foxconn. Intel has the AOpen's i915GMm-HFS for their Socket 479, 915G north/ICH6 south.

Each of the 6150 offerings has had it's own set of troubles and this is understandable with version 1 sytems. The Intel system is sweet but it had heat problems and at $266 - not a deal (Especially when you could have bout three AMD boards for the same price.)

But these were rushed to market - most notably Gigabyte with POST problems. Since MSI had a sellout, the best option for them is to fix the problems that they do have and move the board from an enthusiast market to a business market. And a business platform does not necessarily mean for the corporate environment. It probably means "business platfrom" for resellers. Hint: get this board Vista MCE approved and in channel for MS approved resellers. (And quit trying to mod our XBoxes!)

They may not have been first to market with the new chipset but they can get the first approval for the next gen of MS. Also - tie that in to resellers, barebones dealers, or HTPC shops (your local computer geek might just be be the one to set you up with the high ticket items - HTPC, stereo speakers, and of course, the big honkin Plasma TV.)

So does this mean that this board won't see the light of day as an individual unit? (Newegg, ZZF, etc)?

Sorry to kill the buzz, I'm just thinking bad thoughts lately.

Can't get my venice 3200+ to run at 2500, it does 2480 if I turn up the ddr voltage to 2.7. I have 1gb corsair value ram. I plan to put an OPty 146 in there, do you guys think it will do 2500 easy or does it sound like my memory is causing this problem?

btw-my memory is supposed to be 400 but upon booting, it says mem clock 333, I"m a little confused by that.

thanks for any suggestions.

Also, I have noticed that when I specify 128 mb video memory in the bios, it is very unstable. and usually reboots. This is weird.

I have a random question. When my machine posts, the nvidia 6150 post says "Engineering bios not for production release". It came with 3.00. Does this error message disappear if you upgrade to later than 3.00.

Thanks.

Thank you dwaleke. I was using a S-ATA. I'll try P-ATA.

Derek-

I received that same message, which went away as soon as I flashed to bios 3.13.

Memory should not be a bottleneck.

Insert the memory modules in DIMM1 & DIMM2 (the two slots nearest CPU) and set "Memclock Mode" to [Auto].

Are there any reviews for this board anywhere? I used to have an MSI RS480M2-IL and am worried MSI still has the same problems.

Can someone tell me if:

-- USB KVMs work yet? My old MSI board did not whereas my Foxconn 6150-EKRS board does. I was about to buy this board until I read something to this effect a few pages back.
-- Are temps still crazy inaccurate? They used to vary between BIOS revision all the time and this drove me mad.
-- Why can't they run 4 512 MB DIMMs at 400 when the Foxconn can?

Thanks.

My USB KVM works fine in Windows, but keyboard does not work in BIOS. I have to insert kbd USB connector to a USB port of KVM to setup BIOS.

Temp seems to be accurate.

Thanks renethx. I'm almost 100% certain I have the memory in 1&2, I'll have to check tonight.

Also, I noticed when I leave memclock mode at auto, it does say mem clock 400 on boot, but I thought I have to change it to 166 in order to OC?? When I change it to 166 like in the OC recipes that's when it says memclock 333. The one time I left it on auto, and OC to 2400, it quickly had many memory failues and died.

anyway, that's my secondary complaint. I really found out that my Venice is not prime stable much over 2380ish. I'm thinking that is probably just the chip and that my new 146 should do much better. I was just hoping that my memory was not limiting me and that I wouldn't be wasting my money on the 146. Well, actually I only bought it because it was cheaper than the 3200+ & it is a better chip.

I can't get my component out to work at all. I've changed forceware to 81.86 and bios to 3.13. I get the ugly blue screen when I switch the output to tv in my nvidia setup. I don't really know anything about video settings for tv, ntsc, 480i, etc. I am just leaving that at the default on the list, I think it is ntsc at the top. My svideo doesn't work either, doesn't show anything on my tv.

although my vga looks great on the same tv, it's an lcd HDTV monitor with vga and component, svideo

I have a 27" CRT SDTV, so I don't know how much I can help you, but... I had an easy time getting the s-video to work on default (NTSC). I had the blue screen problem with component, you have to choose 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i to output correctly. Let us know if this works for component, but I'm surprised the s-video isn't working.

So does anyone know where one of these motherboards can still be purchased?

Or where this MSI K8NGM2-NBP motherboard can be purchased?

I've had no luck finding either one for sale anywhere online or locally in the East Bay, CA. Any advice would be appreciated.

I wanted this board for my cousin's upgrade and I couldn't find it anywhere. He found it here and ordered it for $93 shipped

I gave it a shot and placed an order. We'll see if it goes through.
I tried one last night at ISORM.COM. Their website said it was in stock even, but I later got an e-mail telling me it wasn't and they cancelled my order.

You too, huh? Try uninstalling the NVIDIA IDE driver. That solved the problem for me.

I also get the high CPU usage problem every time I try to use standby S3 (or hibernate).
If you use process explorer - hardware interrupts are listed as the source.

None of the bios updates have fixed it.

One work around is to not use the Nvidia IDE and Raid drivers (nvatabus.sys and nvraid.sys installed in \windows\system32\drivers\).

Another work around is to not use IDE drives.

Unfortunately for me, I have two mirrored SATA drives, a Maxtor IDE hard drive, and a Plextor IDE DVD. As a result I can't use standby S3 or hibernate.

Also, the Nvidia uninstall routines did not remove these drivers for me when I was experimenting with the cause of this problem. I had to manually remove references to the above .sys files in the registry and manually remove the \windows\inf\oem##.inf files which kept reloading them when I rebooted.

If you just try to delete these .sys files, XP won't boot.

I also had some luck turning off the secondary IDE controller in the BIOS (which had the Plextor attached) and leaving the primary IDE controller (with my Maxtor) still on.

I didn't get high CPU usage when I tested it a few times, but this problem is not automatic. Sometimes it takes more than a few tries before the high CPU usage appears after standby. Since I like to use my DVD drive, I haven't had time to experiment to see if the Plextor or the secondary IDE controller could be the problem.

My conclusion though is that Nvidia's IDE drivers are just flaky. Also other Nvidia based motherboards can have this problem using the Nvidia IDE drivers.
