Okay, someone answer this one. Got the board up and running. It now recognizes both my IDE and SATA devices. When I go to install XP it makes it seems to go fine but then two things happen: One, it skips the check for a previous version of windows. Second, after formating the drive, it goes ahead to the file setup, and while in the middle of it, it will instantly turn the power off to the machine. No warning, no anything- it is like the power cord is pulled. Sometimes it does it at the start of the file setup screen, and sometimes it makes it to about 30% complete! I can't tell if this is motherboard, drive, memory, or processor related.... Arrrggh!

try this: shut off, unplug power and press the clear cmos button. turn back on and go into BIOS setup and select adv. bios features, then boot sequence. Set the first boot to a known working bootable drive. This could be a HD, a CD/DVD drive with a bootable CD/DVD, or even a floppy. Disable all the others (2nd and 3rd option). Hit F10 and reboot.

Oh while you're there, disable quick boot so it'll hopefully give you a bit more info about what's happening.

Mr. Magoo,

In my experience, messages about PXE (pronouced pixie) duirng boot-up usually come from trying to boot from the network. Network or PXE (pixie) booting is a common corporate practice used to image new machines. I would guess that in your case, the "PXE-E61: Media test Failure" means that you do not have an ethernet cable attached to the board (or it is broken). Make sure that you are booting from your harddrive, not the network.

I'm straying off topic here, but what DVD decoder software are you guys running, or what do you suggest?

My DVD burner came with PowerDVD, but I hear people talking about ffdshow and nvidia puredvd decoder. I'm obviously a novice on this subject.

For now, I'll be viewing on a 27" Panasonic Tau tube TV. I'll probably be migrating to a 42" plasma in the next 12 to 18 months though.

I find NVDVD (from nvidia) to be the best for my uses. I tried a few of the other common ones, but one of the major drawbacks was that they did not decode the dolby digital surround to 5.1, but rather turned it into pro logic. NVDVD works with the MSI boards Hi def audio and can produce the discrete channels on my PC's surround speakers I have hooked up to the boards audio.

I also really like the features of the program for picture adjustmnent, etc. I watch on a monitor, not a TV.

I have a problem running two PCI TV tuners on this motherboard.

I have an ATI HDTV Wonder and a Sapphire Theater 550 Pro and each one works individually on this motherboard, but when I try to boot with them both in the PCI slots, the computer wont boot (no video signal & no beep codes).

I have to install both, because of the limitation in MCE 2005 where I need the standard tuner for SD channels and the HDTV tuner for HD channels.

Has anyone tried running these two tv tuners on this motherboard?

Hey renethx,

Have you tried out the new 3.20 bios ? Is it better or worse then 3.1 over clocking wise anyway.

DCDenton, it's WORSE. They've taken away CPU multiplier. In v 3.13 setting the multiplier (as opposed to leaving it on auto) gives you a +0.05v vcore boost. No more.

Thanks to renethx, Olive Yew, and cupajava for their tips.

I'm currently running:

MSI K8NGM2-FID (v3.13 Bios)
Athlon 64 3200+ @ 2500MHz (default vcore, E6)
2 x 512MB Corsair VS (default vdimm, default timings 2.5, 3, 3, 8)
250Mhz HTT/LDT
Memclock Value 166 Mhz

Now that I've overclocked this board, I've got another question.

How far can you underclock the motherboard/CPU? Ideally, I'd like the CNQ feature to underclock the CPU and HTT to some low value if all I'm doing is surfing or editting a doc. Something lower than 1250Mhz (5 x 250Mhz) would be nice.

Ideas? I've started looking into RMClock, but I can't seem to get a 4x HTT multiplier working. Also, RMClock does not allow you to change the HTT/LDT frequency.

Thanks!

DCDenton,

I am using BIOS v3.20 rigtht now. So far there is nothing wrong, no Memtest errors. As for overclocking, max stable CPU frequency in my system is the same as the other BIOS versions. Of course you cannot boost CPU voltage by +0.05V unlike v3.10 and v3.13.

Hey guys,

Well, my 3200+ is now up and running stably at 2.3GHz. I'm a little disappointed that I can't get higher than that since a lot of others seem to be able to do it.

One thought I had...I bought the nMediaPC 100BA case for my HTPC. It comes with a 270W Enermax Power Supply (Specs HERE). I'm wondering if the rails have enough current supply for overclocking. Maybe my Vcore isn't stable enough when overclocking and that's why I get reduced performance. Well, it's just a thought, anyway.

I figured that 270W should be enough since I don't have any PCI or PCIe cards plugged in (yet). If I do decided to add a vid card later, I would probably get a beefier uATX supply at that point.

aylai, renethx: What power supply are you using?

mikeaco, use BIOS v3.13, raise CPU voltage by +0.05V and see if CPU can run at higher speeds. Some says that E6 (ADA3200BWBOX, ADA3200DAA4BW) is not good for OC, but it could be a false rumor.

renethx, yeah...I did that. After getting some RAM that passed memtest at over 200MHz and testing the HTT/LDT at 250MHz, I found that the limiting factor to getting stable, passing results with SuperPI and Prime95, was the CPU.

I did manually set the CPU multiplier to x10 and turned off CnQ to get the extra +0.05V Vcore. However, I could only get to 2.3GHz stably. I did notice with PC Alert and CPU-Z that Vcore was jumping around between 1.40V and 1.45V. So, I know that that the "extra Vcore hack" was working at the time...

So, it must be bad luck for me or the E6 rumors are true... :(

Agreed, I'd bet you'd have it in the boot order, or you have the onboard NIC set to PXE mode.

Check all the other cables you want, it's bitching about the network ;)

Anyone here running Linux on theirs? I've got Fedora 4 with MythTV .19 up and running, save a few small issues still being ironed out. I'm willing to post any info that I've uncovered to get people as far as me. Renethx, you have any interest on linux tips for this topic?

buleyb, I have no plan to write linux section. But if you (or anybody else) are willing to write it, I can add it to the main post.

pctwo: Thanks for the info, but CrystalCPUID didn't help. It couldn't set the multiplier to 4x without crashing the computer and I couldn't find any controls for setting the HTT/LDT frequency.

I just recieved all my goodies last Thursday and have had a ball. I believe I have read nearly everthing regarding K8NGM2-FID and have tried to practice it all. Your advice and recommendations have been great.........However, dumb as this may sound I cannot figure out how to change the DDR voltage and need some help.

good4now: it's not obvious.

From the main BIOS screen, enter "Cell_Menu"

Expand "Voltage Control Function"

The second item down is "Adjust DDR Voltage (v)"

Then set the voltage to the recommended value in your RAM's manual/booklet.

Hello everyone,

I represent Artisan Media Systems, a relatively new company that specializes in the manufacture of custom media center systems. You can check out our

initial website at www.artisanmediasystems.com

While reading through several message boards we have noticed many people looking for the SPDIF digital out bracket for these nvidia and ATI micro ATX boards.

Our company utilizes a custom solution in our own boxes so we are very familiar with fabricating these brackets. It seems Asus, MSI, Gigabyte and the rest

have chosen not to import many of the sound brackets to the United States. The brackets usually sell for around 15 dollars. As a courtesy to the user community our company could fabricate these sound brackets and sell them to you. The sound bracket would be a standard PCI bracket that would include an RCA phono output (digital coax SPDIF) connection to the main board via a three pin position latch adapter (compatable with k8NGM2-FID). We would ask 20 dollars plus shipping (paid via paypal). I'm thinking, if more than 30 of you are interested then we would have enough volume to make this a reality. If you are interested please email: soundbracket@artisanmediasystems.com for more information. Again, if we receive more than 30 responses, then we'll email all the interested parties with more details.

Happy computing to you all!

-D

I've seen places that list you have the option of using a SPDIF bracket for either input or output. Does anyone know if you can use two brackets and use BOTH the SPDIF input AND output?
I'm pretty sure there are both input and output connections on the board, so it's not just a user selectable option.

Can you use both? If so, a manufactured bracket would be more enticing with two RCA connectors on it.
thanks
