I didn't say anything about sales nor market share. I was stating that pre JB, Android UI is ugly.

And those who handle UI design for a profession are the only ones that can notice it. It correlates directly into the direction that Apple has been heading in and their fans are quite content with. From an individual user perspective, if that is what you are looking for then obviously you have found a perfect fit. For people who are looking for anything else, others are providing a solution more desirable.

The overwhelming majority of people on this forum don't know the difference between a blit and parallax scrolling, but they comment on GPU acceleration all the time. I spent years trying to explain things to them and at the end of the day the only thing that truly matters is what the consumer thinks when they have it in their hand. Apple's loyalists seem to be extremely pleased with what they are doing, they just don't seem to want anyone else to get interested(in terms of doing things to attract more people).

How does this have anything to do with what I said? You're talking in circles with no direction.

I've been using Windows since Windows 95... I think I'm pretty used to looking at the same shit year after year, and it doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I prefer the rows of icons.

well get ready for windows 8 that looks nothing like what youre used too

For some reason, just over the last two or three days, I've been getting that itch to change again and I've been looking more and more at the GS3. I'm starting to think Apple is going to have to show me something more earth shattering than LTE and a slightly larger screen. Maybe something on the software side?

They've already shown iOS 6 which doesn't bring much to the table. Unless you care about turn-by-turn navigation or Facebook integration in everything.

I'm not trying to bring up any discussion of Android, but do any of you think that iOS 6 will have any kind of vast UI change? I used an iPod Touch for about 2 years total (when it came out and the 3rd gen), and then I had an iPhone for about 2 months. I just couldn't do the looks anymore. I know there are people that love it, but I don't think it's for me, and it probably won't be till it gets more functionality from the homescreens.

Also, I'm hopeful and I'm not at the same time about Apple finally allowing 3rd party applications as default. That'd be amazing.

EDIT: To grkM3, read PM's post about the whole Android vs. iPhone thing in this thread. It's completely not wanted and won't be tolerated.

I created a new thread and stuck the 23 posts talking about the Android UI into a new thread called "Android UI discussion"
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2269715

It's a bit of an unusual thing for me to do - but first, the UI discussion was interesting (offtopic, but interesting) and saying "stop talking about that" didn't seem like a good way to go, and second it cleans up the discussion in this thread, and new iPhones don't get launched very often.

Please keep it on-topic from here on out - which is the new iPhone, iOS6 and anything that's likely to be related to the new iPhone launch.

Thanks for your cooperation

Being that ios6 is most likely gonna dump google apps like the map and stuff but will ios6 dump youtube? Is it fair to assume there will be a seperate youtube app? Will it play "nice" on iphones?

Yes, there won't be a standalone youtube app. Apple said that Google is working on a new app, but who knows if that will ever come out considering the recent patent stuff.

You'll have to use the regular youtube.com site now.

im pretty sure i read that they were also dropping youtube, but from what my friend tells me the YT app on ISO wase never very good

on the maps front forcing people to use something new if they like/are used to Gmaps might not be a great idea

How does this have anything to do with what I said? You're talking in circles with no direction.

It isn't a direction, it's an observation. Apple is building things with you in mind(not you explicitly per se). This will give them a far sturdier user base, but it is going to limit their broader success. Given the choice between an iPhone and anything else, most people pick something else. Apple's direction seem to be clearly one of making the people who choose an iPhone even more devout over trying to gain more into their ecosystem. Your comment clearly defined you as being one of the few who can, to paraphrase 'properly appreciate the iPhone for what it is', that is precisely the market Apple is going after. It helps explain how they can leave off trivial UI functionality for so long and not only not lose support, but to have their customers champion them for doing so.

To be fair, everyone is trying to suck you into their ecosystem.
WP8 + Windows + Xbox.
Google Services + Android + Android TV + Android Tablet + Chrome OS if that ever takes off.
iPad + AppleTV + iPhone + OSX.

They're all integrated. Just looking at what I typed, it looks like Microsoft's is the simplest in form, but that's just my observation. It really has nothing to bear on this conversation.

I'm all for ecosystems. I think it's great, but I think it's bad at the same time. When you buy content, you're essentially stuck in certain ones and then it's a beeeeeach to get out of them.

Anyway, given an iPhone user the choice between an iPhone and something else.... They're going to buy the iPhone.

My current beef with Microsoft, something that bit me when I had a WP7 phone before, was that Microsoft has all the pieces of the pie. They just don't actually integrate them together.

Why couldn't my XBox (well, my roommate's XBox) access my Zune Account without XBox Live Gold?(1) Why couldn't I use my phone to control playback on either my computer or my XBox?(2) Why wasn't Skydrive better integrated into the whole experience? (3) Why couldn't I stream music from my computer to my phone (4) or set up playlists to be stored in Skydrive to playback on my phone, from anywhere?(5)

1: Enter your credentials into an AppleTV, you have access to your music
2: iTunes Remote on iOS
3: iCloud
4: Home Sharing (which existing without the name for YEARS before)
5: iTunes Match

There were any number of things that WP7 had that i loved to pieces, Bing Local Scout being a big one. Really, all the different integrated systems that just worked really well, and REALLY quickly. But, as I think J Allard said once (though I am having trouble finding the quote) there exists a golden shotgun at Microsoft headquarters that each departments uses to shoot themselves in the foot at least once before launch. The article was specifically talking about how noisy the 360 is.

They have fixed pretty much all of that now though. Skydrive is integrated in both WP8 and W8, you can stream your music to your phone using Skydrive, you can control your xbox with your phone using SmartGlass and your Zune account will be merged into an app called Xbox Music

NFC will also be an important part of sharing between your devices. Wether this will be a truly seamless experience remains to be seen but i think this year is a big year for MS and they are going all out

Well that is definitely good to hear. Because honestly the iTunes backend ecosystem is pretty strong right now, it will be good to see Microsoft step up to the plate.

Pity that I have no intention of getting a WP8 device as I don't like large screen phones.

For your amusement, check out this YouTube video about possible iPhone 5 features
http://youtu.be/DuosLfc0zU8
(which to my amusement started with an advertisement for the Nexus 7)

I particularly like the part starting at 0:55. :D

I hope the new iTunes rumor is true. I just recently did a reinstall of Windows and decided not to install that Frankenstein of a music client.
