So what does "unlocked" mean? I just unlocked my iphone 4 and I want to give it to my girlfriend, who just moved to London and needs a phone. Is it possible to put a UK SIM into an Iphone 4? I recall reading somewhere that you need at least a 4S.

Unlocked means you can use whatever SIM card you want on wahtever network you want (so long as the hardware supports it). You should be ok if its unlocked. I don't believe you need a 4S. A 4 should be fine. The iPhone 4 was sold unlocked worldwide except for the US.

Somebody, please translate. I don't know what that means.

So does that mean a non-developer like me can downgrade?

ONLY if Apple's servers are still allowing a restore to 5.1.1, you can use a PC application to intercept and store the server's unique data for your particular device so that you can do it in the future even after Apple stops allowing it.

Apple stops allowing it for older iOS versions shortly after a new iOS is released for your device, but I know they were still allowing iOS 5.1.1 on an iPhone 3GS last night. It's worth a shot. Like he said, it doesn't require hacking or doing anything with your phone. You just download the application (TinyUmbrella) from the website and follow the instructions with your phone plugged in.

I'm going to cancel both of the iPhone 5 preorders. It will save me the hassle of trying to sell my half of the iPhone 5. Since I didn't get the phones today from AT&T, I went ahead and bought white iPhone 4S off of Ebay. I will get it on Tuesday and give that to my wife to use on Straight Talk. Forget this AT&T bullshit. This 2-3 weeks wait is BS considering AT&T sent me confirmation email saying I will get the phones on the 9/21 and they already started the numbers port process today. AT&T already claimed one of my Google Voice number and my wife's Straight Talk number. I just checked and both numbers are missing. That's great but we don't have any AT&T sims or phones to use it with since AT&T haven't sent us our phones. :colbert: I hope I can get this numbers thing resolved without it turning into an ugly mess.

There are tons of iPhones in stock. I went during my lunch but they refused to sell me one without activating it in-store.

How messed up is that? Aren't these phones unlocked??? If I am willing to pay full price, shouldn't I be able to walk out with one?
Officially the sale of iPhones without a contract has not begun. Since Apple is going to sell out their initial production run they're using those phones to fill contract orders, since contracts pay more (Apple gets a cut of the monthly plan on top of the phone).

at 800mhz that's even more impressive.... its going up against S4 Kraits @ 1.5ghz which crush those quad A9s?
1.2GHz is the max speed under load, 1GHz and 800MHz are the two lower power states.

Very fast numbers indeed. The GPU is almost identical to the iPad, this I did not expect.

I know on my 4s that the 3d flyby features drops frames when I rotate around and pan around. Now I'm curious if how smooth it is on the 5.

I just got back from the Verizon store. Had a chance to play around with the new iPhone and have to admit it's a bit awkward but more than likely due to the locking mechanisms as opposed to the screen increase. Hitting the back button is definitely a bit more of a chore. I'll hold out judgment until I can actually hold one that's not locked down.

One other thing I did was check for scuffs. I couldn't find any on either of the black display models and obviously nothing on the white. I wonder if this is being blown out of proportion or if its related to specific batches?

One other note, apparently my car will still function the same since it is a usb input. I guess it's the cars with the adapter cables that will have issues (I had a car like this a couple of years ago).

I just got back from the Apple store. I played around with the new iPhone 5 as well. I did not like it. Not the iOS. But rather the actual design and feel. The long tall shape was weird. Maybe it will grow on me but it looked out of place and balance. I think people complaining about not being able to hit certain thing with their thumb on the bigger Android phones will find similar experience with this longer iPhone. The longer screen and shape reminded me of the 2nd gen iPod nano. The aluminum looked fine but I didn't like how the phone felt in my hands. The edges weren't comfortable and it didn't feel nice as the glass on the iPhone 4. I think the new phone is a downgrade in every aspect of the physical design. I looked at the iPhone 4 sitting next to it and that phone looked natural and felt great in the hand. The shape of the older iphone looked perfect or maybe it's because that's what I'm used to seeing. Design wise: iPhone 4 > iPhone 5

Ruh-roh!

My phone came with a nano-SIM preloaded and my old phone worked up to the moment I activated my new phone. I think someone got their hands on your new iPhone 5s, turned them on, and activated them.

I heard Best Buy employees had a nasty habit of playing with new toys before debut, then reboxing them and selling as new. When the morons starting doing this with cell phones, management had to drop the hammer on them.

I bet it happens even more at other places.

That's how it worked for me as well. They preloaded my old AT&T phone number into the SIM on my new Verizon iPhone 5, and after I activated the iPhone 5, my AT&T phone stopped working.

Although, is there anything else that I need to do to ensure that my account is closed with AT&T? It seems like such an odd and indirect way to cancel your service that I get the feeling that I need to do something else... directly.

I spoke with AT&T rep late last night. She claimed there was slight problem with one of the number porting and that caused the delay in shipping. She said the phones were now back ordered for 2-3 business weeks so I would get it in sometime in middle of Oct. I told her that was unacceptable as one of my Straight Talk number is set to expire in couple of days. I can't refill the card because AT&T took the number and AT&T is not going to be able to complete the porting at a later date because that Straight Talk number will have expired because of lack of payment. It's messed up situation because of the iPhone 5 not being available and it looks like my wife will lose her Straight Talk number as a result of AT&T incompetence. AT&T should've never initiated the numbers porting if they didn't have the phones available. I'm not sure about my spare Google Voice number. I think that number might get returned to me since Google owns that. At least I hope so. If not I still have my primary Google Voice number, and I'm never going to unlock that number. Not after this experience. I went had the rep cancel my order. My wife will likely have to get new Straight Talk number and she will just have to use the iPhone 4S on Straight Talk.

I know how number porting works. Couple months back I ported my T-Mobile number to Google Voice and my wife's T-Mobile number to Straight Talk. Everything went smoothly since I had actual SIM cards and phones in possession. My T-Mobile account got closed automatically once the porting was complete and my T-Mobile SIM cards stopped working. Just like it should. It's AT&T that screw up in this case starting the port when they didn't have the product in possession.

You can call AT&T to double check that your account was closed properly if you're concerned.

You can port the mobile number to Google Voice before Straight Talk disables it.
