First thing. Does anyone's power and volume buttons have a lot more wiggle room than The 4/4S?

Got mine about an hour ago from UPS. Have it restored and setup now. Weird that I still have service on my old phone too.

That's normal. When I switched from an iPhone4 to Gnex, both on Verizon, the iP4 still showed it was in service for about two hours before it stopped working.

Nobody at my local Best Buy, but I was there about half an hour after it opened.

iPhone 5 fares very well in the drop tests:

http://www.macrumors.com/2012/09/21...op-tests-show-very-durable-device-and-screen/

Well, as much as we hate to admit it, the iPhone 5 did amazingly well in our drop test, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 came out in pretty bad shape. It’s the cold hard truth that we can’t hide and we can’t ignore.
....
The hard aluminum shell of the iPhone 5 withstood the impact pretty well, and the glass protecting the display remained intact. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S3 predictably lost its back cover and suffered damage to the casing and the front glass. Sad, sad, sad.

Wow, it did incredibly well. I'm sure the aluminum body and weight drop played a major part in that. Less mass to impact and a material that isn't prone to shattering on the back is a good thing :)

A little bit of dremel buffing and some black sharpie and you'll be back in business :p

The GS3 got murdered.

I now own HTC One X and the iPhone 5, 2 of the most beautifully designed phones I have ever seen.

So, Verizon didn't put my apartment number in the shipping address, and FedEx simply stated it was an invalid address rather than deliver it to my apartment complex office. I really hope the lady at FedEx is right in that I should be able to go to the local office and pick it up tonight. I'm just not sure since invalid address = send back to shipper vs. no one home = try again (both of those being delivery exceptions). Would definitely be uncool to have it sent back as it would not only take awhile to get a new one, but it would take awhile to get a refund back on my card. I think it's amusing how a company can take your money almost instantly but a refund can take up to a (business) week. :|

Well, it seems the Verizon model is GSM unlocked. That's nice, though I wonder if it might have been an oversight...

Several of my co-workers pre-ordered iPhone 5's and got them today and I headed down to see what they look like.

I played with one for about twenty minutes and I have to admit that it's better than my impression was from the photos. I had a bit of a negative opinion of the iPhone 5 after the presentation, but I have to admit it feels nice in the hand and it feels light and solid and the screen doesn't look as silly stretched out as I thought it was. I felt the power of the Apple distortion field attacking my will to resist but I successfully fought through the compulsion to immediately order one and I'm feeling a bit victorious.

I'm still more than slightly peeved at what Apple did with the iOS6 upgrade for my iPhone 4. They left out all the cool features that the 4S gets and instead all I have is a bunch of minor problems and a set of maps that seem like a slight downgrade to me.

What I really want is a reasonably sized Android phone running JB (GS3 is too big for me and the international version is too expensive), so I wait...

And, by the way, Cheezy, chill it on the troll accusations. I consider myself to be somewhat humor challenged and I thought Welshbloke's joke was amusing. There's a difference between making a joke and trolling.

I'm wondering how hard it would be to downgrade.

The way Apple does code-signing, and given that I don't have keys for iOS5.1 (I never jailbroke to get them), I think it would require me hacking their encryption... which isn't going to happen. I have neither the skillz nor the patience for it. So, no, I can't downgrade.

There are tons of iPhones in stock. I went during my lunch but they refused to sell me one without activating it in-store.

How messed up is that? Aren't these phones unlocked??? If I am willing to pay full price, shouldn't I be able to walk out with one?

Really? I just figured it would be sold out everywhere. I'm ticked I haven't heard anything about my preorder since the initial confirmation email. I've been trying to buy 4S today off of Craigslist since I'm pissed about the order delay but dealing with scammers and retards on Craigslist is even more frustrating. D: I might have to call some AT&T stores to see if they have any iP5 in stock. I'm so fed up with this iPhone thing that I might just give up.

1) You would have to confirm, but Apple still may be signing 5.1.1 restores. Usually they keep signing the old version for a little while.

2) You don't need to jailbreak to get your 5.1.1 key. You just plug in your phone and use TinyUmbrella. It works on mac and windows. Takes about 2 seconds. It will attempt to get all SHSH blobs for your phone so it should try 5.1.1 and 6. You don't need to be running 5.1.1 to get your 5.1.1 blob.

I tried to buy one. Walked in at three and not a soul there but four employees with plenty of iPhones in stock. A little over an hour later and they still hadn't got it activated. I'll try again tomorrow. (sometime living in a welfare town has it's advantages)

I will say the early reports of shoddy quality are a bit concerning.

Somebody, please translate. I don't know what that means.

So does that mean a non-developer like me can downgrade?

Just went to my local Radioshack to pick up a temporary case for the iPhone 5 and while I was there 3 people walked in looking for iPhones and another 2 called within a span of 5 minute I was there.

Anecdotal evidence but the manager said all the pre-orders got picked up and the few peices they had were sold within an hour. Pretty insane glad I preordered mine online. This is in East Elmhurst, NY.
