I get home and what do I find waiting for me? AT&T White iPhone 5 with my wife's number on the box. The morons at AT&T shipped the phone out yesterday via overnight delivery. D: This is after I called them Friday night about the status of the phones and canceled the order since they told me 2-3 weeks. Talk about incompetent company. Now I got to deal with the hassle of sending this damn phone back.

Sort of off topic. I hate the ears are weird commercial. I don't know if it's the narrator or what. It doesn't have the same charm that some of the pre-genius commercials had.

My ears are probably more weird than they expected. Still incompatible with earbuds...including earpods.

Strange. The iOS 6 dictionary doesn't have "EarPods" in it.

No way in hell. I'm not touching this phone and locking myself into new 2 year contract. I was willing last week to make my wife happy. But the idiots at AT&T blew their chance. I ordered white iPhone 4S off of Ebay after I got off the phone with AT&T last Friday night. The 4S also came in today as it was also shipped via overnight. I'm charging up the 4S now and will transfer her Straight Talk sim into this phone after I cut the full size SIM card into microSIM.

I really don't like the standard wallpaper in iOS 6. This one is also included, and it's much better, IMO. It shows-off the Retina display very well and doesn't interfere with the readability of icons and labels.

I was very frustrated with my previous phones (iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4), so I really didn't expect to be so satisfied with my new i5. However, the performance and responsiveness is far surpassing any expectations I could have had.

Maybe the perception is so drastic because I skipped a generation (never got the 4S).

I just hope Apple doesn't completely kill performance with the a 6.1 update so people will start wanting the next one. I've always suspected Apple's updates deliberately crippled performance on iPhone 3G and iPhone 4.

FedEx delivery guy just delivered the second iPhone 5. Black iPhone 5 that was to be mine. Maybe AT&T is thinking if I have the iPhones in hand, I'll give in and signup with them.

For anyone on ATT, how does the call quality compare to previous iPhones? I am curious if the call bitrate is any different when using the 5.

Don't know. I didn't open it. I returned both to the local AT&T store. They couldn't believe someone could not want iPhone 5 and were returning it. It took about an hour with a rep to return the phones because their system already showed the order as being canceled. Made me really question the company though. It's good to be monopoly.

I'm getting annoyed by the screen size change, just because of typing in apps that haven't been updated. I find myself missing the spacebar about 50% of the time and my other key presses are slightly off. Wish there was an option to pull the keyboard to the actual bottom of the screen.

That would be cool. The iPad lets you move the keyboard around and even split it for easier thumb-typing (iOS5+).

I've noticed that iOS does use the extra space for the keyboard in legacy apps...but only in horizontal / landscape view.

Got a Wells Fargo credit card? I've been ignoring these inserts and throwing them away. I just took a closer look at this one and noticed it seems like a really good deal.

Wells Fargo said:
Paying your monthly cellular telephone bill with your Wells Fargo Credit Card is the smart way to pay. Why? Simple…you'll receive cellular telephone protection for damage or theft at no cost.1 To make it easier, have your cellular telephone bill automatically charged to your Wells Fargo Credit Card every month.

1. Set up automatic payments with your Wells Fargo Credit Card following the instructions on the Visa or MasterCard site.

Be prepared to provide:

Amount merchant is authorized to charge
Account number on the bill
Card number
Card expiration date
3-digit security number on the back of your card
Date to be charged for bill
Recurring dates for future payments

2. Call your cellular provider or look for your cellular provider now:

Visa® cardholders use this link

MasterCard® cardholders use this link

3. Get up to $600 cellular telephone damage or theft protection.1

1 Protection is subject to a $25 deductible and maximum benefit limit of $600 per occurrence. Protection covers cellular telephones billed to your Wells Fargo Credit Card, subject to a maximum of two claims, per twelve month period, per Wells Fargo Credit Card account number. Protection covers cellular telephones that are stolen or damaged; protection does not cover cellular telephones that are lost. The cellular telephone protection coverage begins the first day of the calendar month following your first cellular telephone billing on your Wells Fargo Credit Card and remains in effect when you continue to charge your monthly cellular telephone bill to your Wells Fargo Credit Card. This protection may not be equivalent to or better than other applicable coverage you may have in force presently or in the future, such as your homeowner's or automobile insurance policies, or through a plan provided through the seller of the telephone. Read all the coverage benefits and exclusions for this protection.

Also, check out this strange glitch in one of the HDR pictures:

I was holding the iPhone 5 extremely still when I took that HDR photo.

Walmart is confused. They have two listings for a "16GB iPod Touch" (one listing for black and another for white). The specs list all the features of a 5th-generation iPod Touch, but there is no such thing as a 16GB 5th-generation iPod Touch. I wonder if I should buy one and make a stink because:

  • It doesn't have an A5 processor
  • It doesn't have a 4-inch screen
  • It doesn't come with earpods
  • It doesn't use a Lightning cable
  • It doesn't record 1080p
  • It doesn't have an HD FaceTime camera

I suspect Apple has a new SKU for the $200 16GB iPod Touch 4th-gen with pre-loaded iOS6. This is basically a repeat of the 2nd-gen/3rd-gen iPod Touch debacle.

All retailers sold their 8GB 2nd-gen + iOS3 SKU as "iPod Touch 3rd-generation 8GB" -even though it was a 2nd-gen device. Still, lots of owners insisted they had a 3rd-generation device and they did not.

Hardware-wise, the 2nd-gen iPod Touch was comparable to the iPhone 3G (second iPhone). The 3rd-gen iPod Touch was comparable to the iPhone 3GS (third iPhone).

Well, in this case the 5th Gen Touch is what... roughly a 4S with the bigger screen? And the 4th gen is an iPhone 4. At least this time they are visually different to distinguish them.

Don't know if anyone talked about this... but...

I noticed my iPhone 5 adjusted its lockscreen brightness down while in a darker environment. I also noticed that it automatically dialed the brightness down when lights were off... albeit taking pretty long to do so compared to other phones.

That was my biggest gripe about iOS as a whole (on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch). "Auto brightness" was always stuck on the brightest level exposed, and it never tried to dial down! Lock screen was also always stuck at the level set in Settings so it won't be visible at all in broad daylight if set too low in Settings but it would always be too bright in the dark.

I think this small change totally completed my "phoning" experience. Not sure if anyone else appreciates it, but... I do. Immensely! Especially since I use my phone in the dark quite often.

Swiss Federal Railways is pissed that Apple has stolen their clock for the iPad Clock app.

http://translate.google.com/transla...6209939&hl=en&langpair=auto|en&tbb=1&ie=UTF-8

SBB are the sole owner of the trademarks and copyrights of the station clock, said Ginsig. The railway company will now seek to Apple. The aim would a legal and financial solution.
Apple has now licenced the clock design from them.

I've submitted feedback to Walmart multiple times. I noticed they changed the description slightly. It still lists all the 5th generation features on a 4th generation product, but they changed it to say "available in 16GB and 32GB capacity." The 5th generation is available in 32GB and 64GB, but everything else in the description still indicates a 5th-generation device.

  • A5 processor
  • 4" screen
  • Lightning connector
  • Loop strap
  • EarPods (possible that the new 4th-gen 16GB SKU does include them, not sure)

I submitted feedback again. Forgot to mention the loop strap though...

Apparently, Apple can barely produce enough Lightning cables for their iPhones and iPods.

1 month after I got my phone and I finally have another charging cable.

I gave up trying to find a Lightning cable at Best Buy / Target / Walmart / Radio Shack / AT&T / BJ's and finally ordered one from store.apple.com on 10/01 along with an iPod Touch 5th generation. I canceled the iPod Touch 10/12 and the Lightning cable finally started to ship 10/16. Until I received it today, I kept checking the local retailers and they never got them any stock.

It went from China --> Hong Kong --> Taiwan --> Japan --> Alaska --> Indiana --> Georgia

How can something leave HK, destined for the USA, and pass-through other countries first? It was still delivered on 10/19, though.

Seems really inefficient for these to leave China in individual shipping boxes that are MUCH larger than the product's package inside. They should be coming to the states on pallets and then packaged for shipment directly to customers. It tells me that production is barely keeping-up.

Bestbuy.com still says "coming soon" and one user review indicates that they found the cable in-store around 10/1. My local Best Buy store says that none in the region have ever received them, except one far away that got over 2,000 units.

I bet Apple Store gets priority and always has them in-stock, even if the store.apple.com does not.

I find it odd that people have had such trouble getting Lightning cables. I walked into the Apple Store the day the iPhone 5 came out and walked out with two of them. There were still plenty of them on the rack too.
