Super PLS and Super AMOLED displays are bouth better than IPS when it comes to off angle brightness so it can be done better provided Samsung is willing to sell those displays to their competitors.

hey can you play 1080i MPEG2 files and display properly on iPad 3 screens using AVPlayer HD? I don't even know if it supports iPad 3 either.
 
I have always had my iPad 2 in a case. The case is called Bear Motion Leather Case. It is pretty awesome in my opinion. I just looked on Amazon and I vaguely seen some being sold for iPad 3 for around $25. I don't mess with screen protectors for it since its always in that case.

No. Apple hasn't opened up an API to hardware accelerate video decoding, so everything that's not in MP4 container has to be decoded in software, and dual-core Cortex A9 at 1GHz isn't fast enough to decode anything more than 720p.

The simplest solution is to remix or reconvert all of your movies back to MP4. Better compression, smaller file size, universally compatible with most devices (that support the resolution), and it fits into iTunes, so it can be tagged and organized.

Ah man that's a big downer for me. 🙁

I don't want to compress 1080i MPEG2 files that are music videos / TV performances to retain top notch PQ.

But I do compress some 1080p or 720p movies. 🙂

But here is the thing with the iPad2 (don't know about iPad3), if you convert to Apple supported MP4, the pictures lose all contrast and they look flat. For some strange reason the contrast is gone on most of them. And you know iPad 2 does not offer contrast adjustment, just brightness only. This is *one* of the reasons why I don't want to convert to this. I had threads created asking about this at apple support forum but they told me "send email to Apple as a "feature request". So I did, but of course nothing has happened.

But man, wow, other than horizontally distorted lines across the screen (due to inability to properly de-interlace), the 1080i TS file running via AVPlayer HD on iPad 2 was breathtaking. Absolutely awesome pictures. Only if they can support this video file type it would be a big winner for me.

It's actually kind of oxymoronic to say MPEG2 TS retains better PQ over MP4 considering the h.264 codec in MP4 won out over MPEG2 TS in terms of PQ and compression. That's why it's used more in Blu-Ray. There should be no difference if you encode it right. If you lose picture quality, then you didn't set up the encoder right. Just like if you convert FLAC to MP3, you'll lose information if you encode it wrong.

And AVPlayerHD does have a contrast control.

For compression the MPEG4 will do better job and is more efficient than the MPEG2 format. But I am talking about the MPEG2-TS original source with 1080 resolution. You just can't beat original source no matter how good of ripping you do... And yes, I kept as high bit rate as possible when I ripped to MP4 format at 720p. They looked grreatttt on iPod Touch and contrast was good, as if it didn't lose contrast. But on iPad 2 it looked like donkey cow, man I almost threw up [seriously].


And AVPlayerHD does have a contrast control.

It didn't. It did not give me the option to adjust contrast the entire time I was using my iPad 2. Otherwise I would have used it and took great advantage. But the only time I really needed this feature is when I run MP4. Any other file format I didn't lose contrast.

Then I think you either encoded it wrong or your iPad 2 is faulty.

In any case, I sincerely doubt you have an iPad 2 with AVPlayerHD installed now that I read the previous statement.

I don't have iPad 2 now cause I said this before that I sold it. When I had iPad 2 for several months I used AVPlayer HD to play my video files. Before that, I had to use third party software to convert files to MP4 which looked like donkey sheep. AFTER I got the AVPlayer HD, I did try a few converted MP4's and still looked like donkey kong. I know what I am saying, cause I have experience in this. Don't just resort to "Oh your device is faulty. RETURN it" lol.

You can't have equal 100% video quality as original source by converting to MP4 regardless of what settings you use. Contrast isn't the only thing that determines PQ. It's only one tiny portion of it.

OK, I can see that iPad 3 owners and enthusiasts are not happy with my comments. Look, I'm being realistic here.. not trying to troll.

I have now officially concluded that there is no freakin way in hell I'm buying iPad 3. The fact that it will not play 1080i TS files and 720p MKV files without crashing it's useless to me....... I wasted money on an iPod Touch and iPad 2. I spent what... $600 for iPod Touch and accessories and about $1000 on an iPad 2 and accessories. That's whopping $1600 dough. Man instead of buying these junk I should have taken that money and save a few more and get me a $2000 subwoofer. I definitely screwed up managing my hard-earned money.....

The ONLY good suggestion I got from one of you members was the Audioengine A2 speakers. Everything else (including my Popbook 😀) has been disappointing to me.

I hearby make officially official statement. I'm done with this thread since most of you don't like me. This is my last post in this thread. You guys now can go celebrate!!! I may still stick around here at Apple forum.

Gone through three of these so far. First one had a dead pixel in the bottom left part of the screen + red tinting on the top right half of the screen. Second one had a dead pixel near the center of the screen + red tinting on the top right half of the screen. This third one has a speck of dust stuck under the glass AND a small smudge of what looks like oil or grease under the glass.

Gonna exchange this one more time. If I get another one with similar issues, I'm getting a refund.

Hate to say it, but you probably will. Same thing happened with the iPad 1 for me and I ended up returning it. I got a defective iPad 3 and I'm not going to even try. I'll just return it and give it a try later. There are full of similar reports as yours on macrumors forums.

I'm curious about this dodocase, I've been contemplating on buying one, but I didnt see any photos on their website that you can stand an iPad up using the case. Is it possible?

I had an older Dodocase. It's possible to prop it up, but it's not stable on certain surfaces. Apple's Smart Cover does a much better job.

Well, I returned it again this morning and got another one (fourth one). That one had dust stuck under the screen too so I then returned it before work. Got a another one (the fifth one) and the screen itself is perfect (no dead or stuck pixels, no dust stuck underneath the glass), HOWEVER I do have one LED showing at the bottom of the screen exactly like this shown above:

Getting tired of this panel lotto and I don't know if I want to keep this, but it's taken me five tries to get a unit with a perfect screen...
