Somehow its difficult for me to get excited about the early small state results. By all predictions the early caucus and primary results will split among front runners especially on the Republican side. And I have to laugh at Pabster who thinks Huckabee has killed himself when most potential voters won't even notice extra mud in all the mud being slung already.

To throw a bone Ron Paul's way, he has the funds to go until super Tuesday without proving support, but everyone else will have to show some early results as the field thins.

Crunch time is a coming but its still many weeks away. Wake me up after Super Tuesday and spare me the revisionist history from every candidate explaining why they alone were the real winners even if they did not place first.

Today's news... Huckabee makes perhaps the biggest fumble of the campaign season yet

I don't see a mistake here actually. Huckabee has no money to run these ads anyway. He is trying to run as the nice, Christian minister/governor. He calls this news conference and says he won't run his negative ad because he wants to run a positive campaign. Then he proceeds to show the negative ads and have the media run the ads for him free of charge and without him taking responsibility for them. It's brilliant in a swift boat kind of way.

I sure don't want to diminish what chowderhead is saying, but in any primary and caucus process fellow party member beat up on fellow party members and then after all that bloodletting the party must somehow regain the party unity to unite behind their one and only one Cinderella.

What is especially interesting on the Republican side is the tag team Huckabee and McCain who seem to ally in a seeming bid to taking out Romney and Giuliani who have no such alliances,.

Sure, brilliant if it had succeeded however it was a total failure. Nobody bought it. Listen to hardball, Tucker, The Washington Post , Wolf Blitzer or The Mclaughlin Group this week and they will all be laughing over this. This one's going to cost Huckabee because he looks foolish and this runs precisely against the image he is attempting to present to the "humble Christian Iowa voter".

Well Guiliani isnt even in Iowa or NH, so they arent ganging up on Giuliani. They ARE ganging up on Romney, because 1. he has attacked both of them, he infact started the attacking, McCain and Huck retaliated against his attacks 2. Romney is Hucks opposition in Iowa and McCains opposition in NH. Its a win-win for both of them. The gloves will come off for SC and Florida.

It's never a good thing when the media is laughing at you. With you is fine. But when they're literally laughing out loud at your stupidity, it doesn't exactly beget fine reviews.

The media thinks it sets the agenda but its the voters who vote their gut. Huckabee is fairly good at standing up and deflecting media criticism with a smile.

But its now finally going to the voters. The two jokers in the deck will be unknown future events that will vindicate some candidates and hurt others and also the amount of funding they can attract. Especially on the Republican side, the corporate money has yet to weigh in.

Long odds corporate money will go to either Romney or Giuliana, but a Huckabee or McCain can be bought cheaper. There is a fairly good chance of a deadlocked Republican convention.

I wonder how long the Huckabee McCain marriage can last, while McCain and Giuliani are somewhat cannibalistic to each other, McCain or Huckabee could work with Romney and Giuliani and Huckabee could ally.

The panel on Fox's Special Report all seem to agree that it was a good move on Huckabee's part. I also doubt his supporters will care if some national reporters laugh at Huckabee. I think it probably would help him. Look, Huckabee has less than 1 million dollars. There is literally no more available ad space in Iowa. Even if he wanted to run the ads, he couldn't afford the money or get them on television. Romney now has also responded to the ads. That means it has worked. Get the ads out there without paying for them and have your opponent come off his message for nothing. I don't really care for Huckabee but it's the best move he could have made to get the negative ads out there on his primary opponent.

The error is in the first sentence.

Just out of curiosity is anyone going to be following Fox news on the 3rd? I hear Frank Luntz will be on all day showing us who's winning. 😀
Should be an interesting demonstration in how to steer a weak minded voter.

who do you think will be more likely to be voting in the Iowa Republican caucus? People who watch Fox or read bi-coastal newspapers?

Good question. I may hold a poor stereotype of Iowans so I shan't comment.😀

While hell would freeze over before I would support Huckabee, as an impartial observer, I think Huckabee may win the Republican nomination especially if he can show an ability to overcome his hayseed image in the east. He is going to have to really hit the books on foreign affairs, but some mainstream foreign policy advisers could give him some polish. And there is something genuine in someone who does not speak in slogans and explains the why's of pragmatic decisions.

If Huckabee can pull in the early votes, the money will follow. Huckabees strongest assets are the general weakness of the entire Republican field. That and the fact that he is a Washington outsider may work to distance himself from GWB policy.

But Huck has lots of negatives too and I assume other Republican contenders will try to exploit them and portray him as a ignorant boob thereby alienating the very religious right they need to pander to.

If nothing else, campaign 08 will be interesting to watch.

I'm an Iowa Christian voter and I can't comprehend how anyone who follows the tenets of Christianity can support anyone but an anti-war candidate. Granted, I'm a mainline protestant and not an evangelical, different breeds. What happened to the general idea of just war? Oil, DubyaMDs, Demagoguecracy? I'm not sure what reason in 2008 is the new one for the USA kicking off WW3.
This world is spinning out of control, and GWB is going to get us all killed.

That said, this race IMO is between Romney and Paul. Mitt can self-fund if necessary and Ron is the only guy with any substantial (sustaining) grassroots support.

McCain blew large support on amnesty months ago, Huck is an irritable timebomb propped up by the walking zombie evangelicals, Guiliani has articulated no platform, Thompson looks like he could die. They all desire power for the sake of power, besides Ron.

I have to apologize for my joke. I don't even know anyone from Iowa so obviously I am ignorant about Iowans.

On another subject...what are your impressions of how Paul is understood by the average Iowan? Are you satisfied with how his message is coming across?

I'm over it, I'm just fearful that because a few evangelicals promoting someone like Hickabee or pabster is representing Iowa here that we all look like a bunch of nut jobs.

My favorite thing about Iowa is the people. You'll hear this from lots of Iowa expats who've come back. It's a purple state and can go either way. Everytime I travel the nation I am always reminded about how reasonable and how much the average Iowan avoids extremes. Sure, we can't satisfy all the nation all the time with the political picks. Some individuals wouldn't be satisfied till they alone play kingmaker. IA isn't a kingmaker by any means anyway if you look at the trackrecord.

The candidates are forced to do face-to-face retail politics here, and you can start a campaign here without needing millions of dollars. This is the advantage to starting in Iowa.
Even though I dislike him, this has been proven with Huckabees rise. I think partially removing money from the early race is good for this country, where money (mainly corporate) already influences politics far too much. While Huck sucks, in the future this might play in the favor to some other underfunded candidate with a powerful message. Most of the disdain for starting in Iowa seems to come from a lack of understanding as to the advantages of it, and mere contempt for flyover country, which is sad as we're one nation.
Everyone likes to feel elite and look down their noses at the next guy to justify a false sense of supremacy.

With this being said, I think the message comes across well if they've been exposed to it. If we had the foot soldiers, which we do in some areas (my area has always needed more) then you can convince people. Few shut out the idea that the war needs to be stopped.

The saddest part is the Republican base that seemingly refuses to do any real research of their own on the candidates, I feel alot of people are on autopilot that I speak with. Even with those people, they don't feel comfortable with what's going on.

I feel I represent the average Iowa Republican myself when I say that I'd be a Democrat right now if they'd gotten us out of Iraq already. That would've demonstrated leadership to me. We can't follow if there's no one to lead.

This made a lot of sense to Iowans. The only ones who it wouldnt are in the minority like Pabster. Iowans like that wouldn't dare say their pro-death demagoguery in public here, it's pretty looked down upon. You'll find people want to save face in the war. We both know Ron offers the best way to do that. Most thoughtful, university educated Iowa Republicans have abandoned the party, I'd say if Obama is the Democratic nominee in a general election Iowa goes Blue. No Republican short of RP has a chance of beating Obama here. If it's Hillary it's a tossup again this election.
About as many people feel she's a great candidate here, as people who think staying in Iraq is a good idea.

The state is receptive to RP's message, but I fear too little money was spent here. NH seems to be where they decided to focus on early in the cycle. Which is fine, you gotta call those shots. This might be due to perceptions that the message wouldn't be popular here when I personally feel it is or could be more so. People are more receptive here than out of state campaigners assume.

Focusing on his abortion stance and articulating his war stance more would have helped if results don't turn out as we hope for. Evangelical or not, most people here don't grasp the necessity of abortion. Most of all, articulating his view that the states should decide these things rather than federal tyranny would probably be even more popular. I do feel the anti-amnesty crowd, a small but fanatical bunch, have now rallied behind Ron Paul now that Tancredos out.

I have nervous anticipation for our results, it's a total tossup here and but am optimistic about NH. A given is that the results will shock a lot of people, I think here in Iowa a shock to the system will be delivered with whatever Ron ends up placing. I suspect it will be better than the pundits and polls say.

Dividing up the pro-death vote by all the other candidates besides Ron is the biggest benefit. The base will probably cannibalize itself between all the other weak candidates and we'll pull out with the independents and Democrats who didn't side with Obama. With no strong peace candidate in the Democratic party we seem to have most of those people as well.

Most Obama people I've met here don't seem terribly concerned with coming out to vote.. while I heard one RP supporter say he'd ice skate to the caucus if he had to. I think we got the best of the Independents and first-time caucus goers (which I'm one of).
Overall, the message works here, but I'm not sure the attention was placed here early on.

If they keep this up, the police will stop sending them to jail.

Right down on Grand Avenue downtown Des Moines.
Peaceful civil disobedience to an unjust administration. This is beautiful and I applaud these people.
GWB will never pardon these folks, goes against his true religion.
