Level 8, met my first giant & mammoth. Slain both though they killed several fire atronachs in the process.

Nice, I couldn't stand a chance as a melee/range hybrid, not quick and mobile enough; i just get mauled into the upper atmosphere.

I've been playing as kind of a bow assassin so far, just sneaking around taking people out from afar and then hiding while their allies look for me. It's pretty fun but I'm kind of screwed if I get jumped in the wild by something big like a sabrecat. I was thinking about using conjuration magic or enchanting to make my build work better, it would be nice if I could summon something to take hits for me if I need it.

I've been playing a 1hd tank magicless for 13 levels and 15 hours. All this talk is making me want to wipe the slate and start over and reroll lmfao. Loving it.

Don't think lockpicking is worth 'perking' up. I've been able to pick master locks with only 1 perk point and a load of lockpicks. As long as you have a steady source of lockpicks, seems like the only thing you save from perking it is money and time. I'll put it on my list of "nice to have" if I max out everything I do want.

Loving 2-handed weapons, but man are they slow to swing.

Yeah, unfortunately, everything seems to scale based on your level like Oblivion. It does not to seem to be as severe as Oblivion, though. Enemies don't seem to scale as much either. There are certainly areas I can't explore yet due to certain enemies that will dominate me.

It still doesn't have that feel of Morrowind, where you know there is good items to be found, but you simply can't get to it yet (enemies? money? etc.). Level scaling is stupid, but the game is still great.

Not this crap again. What is the point of an RPG if everything levels with you? You may as well just remove the entire leveling system and call it an action game at that point. I can't believe they made this same mistake again. I've been waffling on this one and after hearing about how bad the UI (no excuse for this IMO) I think I'll sit it out. At the very least its going to need some patches and modding before I'll look at it again.

Uh, like just about any game made as you level up you will run into tougher enemies, but you also run into lesser ones that won't give you much trouble. What good is it if you level like crazy and then shoot a boss with 1 lightening bolt? This isn't like oblivion leveling where EVERYTHING increased often significantly.

It's not as massive as it seems, I still find myself 1-shot-ing wolves, spiders and Skeletons with my bow.

This is not Oblivion's leveling system, they did not make that same mistake twice. Oblivion's system was awful, whereas Skyrim has tons of enemies you don't stand a chance against until much later. I'm level 16 and am still waiting to be able to take out a Giant. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but my mace+shield Nord still gets one-shotted by Giants even if I'm blocking, and while it's easy to dodge I eventually run out of stamina and then I'm dead.

By comparison, in Oblivion a level 1 character could beat the game. This is not Oblivion's leveling system.

I really don't have any useful ranged attacks and I don't use any summoned creatures/meatshields. Maybe I need to start... :)

In fact in Oblivion beating the game at level 1 or 2 is actually almost encouraged. You CAN get to high levels and still play the game but only if you level your character very carefully which actually goes against what they claimed to be about (make any type of character you want etc). I found the game impossible to play very quickly so I just stayed at level 2 and beat the game that way.

Hold down 'e' to pick things up. I'm wondering if there's a way to throw an item once you're holding it, so far the only way I've managed is to move the mouse quickly and "release" it... which sends it only a couple of feet. I'd love to actually throw a tomato at someone. :)

I managed to jump on top of a ruin from one side and the ground was a bit lower on their side so they could not reach me. Just had to make sure not to trigger them going around or I'd have been toast. Plus the fire atronach I summon is a good choice to fight against them as she tends to use her fireball range attack rather than going melee (which she's not very good at - frost atronach is better for melee but would then get owned by the giant and mammoth at close quarter).

Brain over brawns..

Ahh thanks. So hold it down vs tap/click which would take the item?

A comment on Skyrims leveling compared to Oblivion. It is not as blatant and you can easily get in over your head. True, some things scale, but death can come very easily if you don't choose your battles carefully. Everything had a nerf bat in Oblivion, not so here. Maybe it's not so bad in higher levels, but hearing that dragon nearby at level 10 can be worrying. :p

Yeah that issue is the SINGLE reason I wouldn't buy this game right off the bat...not because I thought it would be as bad as Oblivion necessarily, but I wanted to find out what the enemy leveling was like in this game, and if it can be fixed with mods (if I don't like it, which I'm assuming I won't).

Oblivion's portals got pretty dull FAST, but even with them and the pitiful main story I'd have loved the game if it weren't for that horrible enemy leveling system.

Yep, as I recall the "Battle of Kvatch" was almost impossible if you didn't do it before level 7, and meanwhile it was an absolute cakewalk if you got there before like level 4 or so. At a certain level you triggered much harder monsters to spawn, however your allies did not level with you and suddenly were completely worthless. And as I recall one of them "could not die" and it was just pathetic watching him get owned over and over again.

I feel like throwing up when I think of Oblivion's levelling system.

Skyrim is nothing like that.

Wow, so many nice character concepts here. I wonder what I should try playing as... I'm thinking a breton mage, but I'd like a story behind and goals ahead - any ideas? :)

The only successful giant encounter I've had so far is one where I kept running away and pelting it with arrows/spells (I'm playing a warrior/fighter FYI). My companion acted as my meatshield and distraction, which helped a lot. But I'm pretty much 1 hit and dead if it can ever get a hit on me, which is pretty "realistic".

I remember Oblivion. It was pretty dull compared to Skyrim, even the DLCs. All the dungeons were the exact same sans two, and running into bandits with daedric armor was retarded. That shit is suppose to be rare as hell - Morrowind made finding a complete set a quest unto itself, which is what it should be. Speaking of, I miss being able to choose different shoulder protectors and pants:).

Oblivion in short:

Don't Level - Clear every dungeon, complete all quests with a pocket knife and prison garbs.

Level - A rat with a spoon can one shot you.

As I recall, the only race I ever used in Oblvion was Breton. And that's because they were incredibly overpowered in that game (not sure how they stack up in Skryim yet). I don't remember all their stats from Oblivion but the biggest was I believe all enemy spells did half damage. Name me character class where that isn't uber-useful!? :)

Seriously though, it was the only race worth playing in Oblivion... how sad is that from a game developer standpoint???

I created a Nord mace/shield warrior for Skyrim, I just always gravitate towards "warrior" characters in new games... I need to get a feel for the melee mechanics before I can appreciate a ranged class like Ranger or Mage.

I hear a lot of talking and not much rimming.

I too played Breton in Oblivion and Morrowind, too. It's just my favorite race. They seem so poetic, dreamy and at the same time I like their "evil" characters that look snoby and seek magical power. Just can't think of an interesting character concept for myself.

Dual-wielding pickaxes + aurora borealis + dragon in the distance FTW!
