One thing I haven't been able to figure out: Black souls.

They are the same strength/value as Grand souls, correct? only they come from NPCs?

I haven't seen any piece of text in the wiki or wherever that gives them a higher enchanting value than grand souls, and that the only purpose of black soul gems is that they are the only gems that can capture NPC souls.

Also, I've yet to grab a "black soul." I killed
Mercer Frey
at the end of that quest, captured his soul, but it was a grand soul. I figured he was as NPC as it gets, no?

Black souls can only be capture in black soul gems.

As a rule, human and orc and argonian and elf souls only go in black soul gems. But I'd be willing to guess that at least a couple people in the game dont have the right flags marked and maybe sometimes fill a grand soul.

the few mods that I have installed go directly into the main Skyrim folder, then plug themselves into data or wherever they need to go.

Don't worry about the 4GB extender--it is already native to version 1.3

yes, but is there any value to them beyond grand souls? that's my question. It seems as though they are equal.

Also, I still haven't found a "black" soul. only black soul gems filled with "grand" souls. Always from bandits, and even that primary human NPC that I mentioned earlier.

The more powerful souls recharge magic weapons better and can enchant a little stronger.

ah, OK. so there is no such thing--in game--called a black soul. I've seen them described as "black souls" online, in wiki or whatever, and that only black soul gems and the black star can hold them, and are only obtained from NPCs.

It seems that giants and mammoths are also grand souls. If there is no difference in enchanting strength from grand souls in black gems to grand souls in grand gems....then why make this distinction?

retarded.

when enchanting damage mods to weapons, it seems that choice of soul really doesn't matter for the actual strength of the enchantment--only the initial charge. You get to select damage vs total charges when you select the enchantment, then choosing the soul gem doesn't seem to make any real difference to the strength of the charge.

Is this correct? (damage-type modifiers only--not the stat increase enchantments that are obviously affected by the type of soul)

i gotta be doing something wrong because I don't notice any changes in the game at all

i copied the textures folder from the download into my data directory in the steam skyrim folder. No difference. I go to the data files thing on the launcher and click load loose files or whatever it says and still no difference.

The instructions in the readme are worthless. I found some videos on youtube that mention copying stuff to the main directory and other mention copying stuff to the data directory.

My pairs of potent dremora lords have been making short shrifts of deathlords for a long while (they took down Red Eagle in less than a minute) but one overlord last night took down 7 of them before the 8th finished him. All while being speared and wall-of-frosted like crazy by Illia. He did not even get projected by my Fus Ro Dah, took it like a boss and just got startled like a dragon. That unnamed mofo belongs in the badass hall of fame.

Maybe it was a bug but it's little surprises in fights like this that make this game so enjoyable, even at level 50+. And I'm only on expert difficulty. That guy would probably have been insane on Master. D:

hmm. I haven't loaded any texture mods, actually. The only thing I have done is change the tree shade and terrain shade depth from 0 (Default) to 1, as suggested is some thread, somewhere, that I read early on. Sorry, don't remember those details or where to find it.

I've noticed a marginal, but decent change in object depth with that.

For me, the textures overall are fine--I actually like the way the water looks, aside from those areas where it appears to be a simple sheet just layered on top of another sheet of terrain--like in marshes or tide pools, with docks and other structures (the way the current just flows in one consistent pattern).

Are you using Skyrim video settings or turning those off and controlling through your hardware? Most people recommend hardware-enforced settings. I haven't compared, but hardware works well or me.

Any humanoid character is automatically a grand soul but can only fit into a black soul gem. Non humanoid (or sentient) character go into their respective level soul gems. Thus a puny ass unarmed level one bandit can fill a black soul gem with a grand soul, but youd need to fight a pretty strong mammoth(or any character greater than level 48) to fill a standard grand soul gem.

You know, for the next Elder Scrolls installment, a civil war between the daedra lords would be awesome. Two clans and you & humanity get involved both on this world and within their realms. You have to take sides.

I keep hoping they remake 1-4 in the new engine. They dont even need voice actors or new voice actors.

Failing that, I think we need an argonian or khajit centric game. Elder Scrolls 6! The lizard invasion!

"Black soul gem" just means that the soul gem has been corrupted to allow it to store souls from a sentient being. Any humanoid, even a random level 1 bandit on the road, has a grand soul but they can't be stored in normal soul gems.

just in-game settings

can you specify settings for a certain game in the hardware level ( i assume this is through the nvidia control panel thingy?) or is it a setting for all games?

yeah, that's how I did it through catalyst. There is an option to force hardware settings, or something like that--I imagine it's the same for nVidia. I believe there is also that option in the Skyrim settings, to turn off game settings and depend on hardware.

Are you using the mod manager? Everything Ive pulled down from the nexus is installed with this. Works well.
