I'm at over 230h, close to level 50, and I still haven't done the Diplomacy quest or started the Civil War. I just roam the countryside and explore/kill/loot. And I'm making a point to not read books that pertain to skills I don't want to raise (e.g. armour, smithing, pickpocketing...), so I raise more slowly.
And I was almost a full month away from the game when I visited my parents.
I am not prepared for the time sink that this game is. I have other games that need my love !!! What a great purchase for 40 bucks. Pennies on the hour !
Another question. If I kill a group of Imperial guards out in the country will anyone back at their headquarters, or whatever you call it, know about it? There is a old fort just west of Whiterun that had bandts in it. I went in and wiped them out for the fun of it. No quest, just went in and went to town on them and looted the place. One game day later it is now occupied by some Imperial troops. I was thinking of going in and killing them as well for the experience. I had heard some places after being cleared out will get a new band of people in there sometimes. So I was wondering if I go and kill the Imperials if that faction will know I did it and treat me differently for it? Namely try to arrest or kill me on sight?
Edit: One of these days I think I'm going to make a nasty guy, maybe a Orc warrior. Someone really badass and just have him go in from day one and just kill anything and anyone on sight for the fun of it. Kill everyone in the country. Kill everyone in the towns. Just a real nasty mofo and see how that goes. Quests wont work probably but who cares. LOL

I know that a few times I got guards to attack me because I accidentally did something or was framed. You eventually kill all of the guards in the town, since they are actually pretty weak. Future guards don't seem to care, although it takes some time before they respawn. (Maybe a week or so)

Somehow, I managed to hurt Bria, or whoever that obnoxious punk girl in Whiterun is. Usually, I can't touch her, but maybe I was able to punch her or something.
Anyway, the entire town set upon me and I had to waste the entire Whiterun guard complement, the guard captain, that mercenary dude (I had already found his sword from him, and managed to loot it off his corpse).
Naturally, I then had to break into everyone's house and murder whomever was cowering behind their kitchen table.
This reminds me: I failed to burn down the town. I didn't even try...Is this possible? :hmm:
I know this is a open game, but I can't help but wonder if I'm supposed to hop back on the tracks or not. I'm still in Riverrun (RiverEnd?). I have been wandering around, found some caves, found a really cool cave where you go through and kill a bunch of bandits and end up on a beautiful overlook of the countryside. No quest tied to it, but it SEEMED to feel like there SHOULD have been a quest (and I obviously missed it). Stuff like that makes me wonder if I'm doing this 'wrong'. There wasn't a whole lot to do in the first town directly, aside from the claw quest. I felt like at level 1 I shouldn't be taking on a quest like this, but again - maybe I'm supposed to?
That's no problem--I do it entirely too much. In most cases, those bandit caves are simple bounty contracts that can be assigned by the Jarls or their assistants. They only ever pay out for 100g, so there is no reason to actually take them--the loot is generally better.
if you wipe out a cave without a contract to kill the leader, it will still be offered some time later. if you feel that you must, you can take the contract, go back, and re-kill the leader. I've had a few of the same contracts offered for the same bandit leader--after already fulfilling it. I assume this is a bug. You may end up with several caves or redoubts labeled "cleared" that you might have to return to for a real quest. Whatever you need to do with that quest will simply spawn once it's accepted.
I wiped out one fortress of foresworn simply because they were in my way, you know. Must have spent on hour doing that. Later, I got the quest
to find/rescue the Sybl of Dibella, which takes you back to that same fortress
. I returned, everyone was still dead, only
the sybil was now a prisoner in a cell, waiting to be rescued
Massive annoyance: so, I finally got my 2x enchantment perk, and I happily run to the table to start enchanting some armor...only to discover that there are no useful enchants avaialble for a helmet.
....WTF???? Why the hell can't I enchant frost/fire/storm magic resist on my helmet? WTF can't I enchant for heavy or light armor, stamina, health, regen blah blah--anything that is actually useful for a mele character?????
All I get is spell boosts and fucking magica regen....for a fucking dragon plate helm?
someone tell me that it isn't supposed to be this way. I've found plenty of Helmets (Been using the Helm of Yngol for quite some time) that already have resistance enchants...so why can't I do this?
I decided to enchant similar gear for Illia so she matches close to me in terms of magical defense. While I only wear cloth (exception being the falmer helmet), I did give her some light armour for her hands and feet. Otherwise we match and look alike. Destructo Twins, Power Up!!!'
It's nice that one can wear a falmer helmet over other headgear. Means I can wear a circlet under one and not have my face hidden by a dragon priest mask. The result is more potent than a dragon mask too (four enchantments in total on two pieces of head gear).
one can wear circlets under headgear--basically, any type of helmet? I never knew this, lol. Is it a bug? Or is it only something that can be done with Falmer headgear + circlet?
I suppose I should have experimented more, I just never tried to equip both at the same time. ...I don't think I've every tried to equip a circlet.

So, yes. The helmet has a lot of not very useful enchantments available for it. I could see using the archery and waterbreathering one, but not much else.

So like, the orc making me dig up books, the loser at the college asking me for soul gems and running items to enchant, the BS jobs at the thieves guild..... do these tasks ever end? Or do they just keep going forever?

Finally decided to finish the main quest. Sovengarde is quite beautiful once you finish. Will I still get random dragon encounters? Or have they all left?

Don't know about the other two, but the Academy quest does end. And you end up with some pretty nice stuff when you do. And a place to hang your hat too boot. I recommend it. Even if you already have nicer stuff, you get a fair amount of alchemy and enchanting equipment.

I only want to finish the Mage quest line as I assume
you get the arch mage's quarters in the end
. It looks like pimping quarters, so I'm down for that.
As for the other fetch quests, I mostly ignore those. I've been grabbing the books for the librarian, mostly because I feel it will actually lead me somewhere, give a decent reward in the end. I don't think there is any end to that old dude losing his fracking alembic, right?

No, no, no, no, no, no. Thats not it. I'm talking about the sideline quest where the orc librarian keeps sending you out for random books, one volume at a time. And they repeat.
-- NEW TOPIC!! --
Can anyone tell me if theres a way to speed up casting Fire Storm? I always get smacked before I can complete. Maybe I need Invisibility first, sneak in, cast once, then go to other spells.

I don't know how it works for spells, but usually invisibility ends as soon as you try an action--like swinging a sword or even pickpocketing.
as for the others, check out one of my posts up there. Those quests are rather useless, much like the "kill this bandit leader" bounties. I mean, that one dude wanted me to give him 5 greater soul gems? fuck that guy.
I did collect the dwemer gears, though, as I was already heading off to the dwarven site to find that staff.

that miscellaneous tab really sucks. especially when half of them are bugged, and can never be completed. For example--I'm still supposed to talk to the Jarl of Riften to be officially granted thane, I think--I have the house and have done everything, and the quest says "Speak to the Jarl." When I speak to her, there is is no option or anything that will end that damn quest.
Not sure if it makes any kind of difference, though--I have the house and I'm not sure if I ever received the special weapon from Riften, but I certainly don't have a house carl there. So if I'm supposed to have a house carl in Riften, I guess that is bugged for me. I suppose I could fix this in console.
The bugged quests have nothing to do with the misc. tab. Any quest can be bugged, though its becoming obvious they didnt play test or debug the quests typically found under misc. as thoroughly as the rest.
