Most of the Vista fanboys kept defending Vista, but as soon as Windows 7 came out they dropped Vista and switched to Windows 7. Actions speak louder than words.

I've used Vista since before launch, and I'm staying with Vista ;^)

My Dad bought a Vista PC:

X2 5200+
2 GB ram
Geforce 6150

Unfortunately, my parents could only get dial-up at the time. So Vista couldn't download any updates. I had a couple of years of using Vista in an out-of-the-box state whenever I visited them.

And I have to say - in that state it was all but unusable.

Constant lockups
The internet was basically unusable
Performance on everything was very sluggush

MS made their own bed with that one.

I switched to Vista from XP within a couple months of it coming out and then I switched to Win7 during the beta. That doesn't mean I hated XP or Vista. Besides, Vista is a different user experience than XP. Win7 is really a refinement of the Vista UI, so it makes complete sense to switch to Win7 right when it comes out.

All I miss is the ability to right click a folder, and then search. There are times I've used the search in Vista/7 where it can't find a file that you can plainly see in a folder.

I used vista for 1.5 years on a thinkpad, and there were some minor annoyances. When I rebuilt my desktop in sept. I installed xp (huge PITA), and simply couldn't go back. I installed a 30 day vista trial to hold me over until Win7. I really couldn't have had a more pleasant experience with Win7.

Just upgraded from XP to Win 7. Can't boot the system without the Win 7 DVD inserted. keep getting:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Please re-install a copy of the above file. "

I think the smiley face after the C is what is causing the problem.

Actually XP was pretty damn good from day 1. Windows 98 was a pile of shit and my computer crashed an average of 3 times per day. I bought XP in mid 2002 and the crashing completely stopped. It was a memory hog, but at least it worked.

Heh, XP was a huge improvement over 98, but I discovered nix around the same time. If it wasn't for games, I probably would have stayed on linux and never switched back. (Internet Explorer was the best browser back then I suppose, but I got my first exposure to Opera thanks to linux, as it was the only good browser I could find on nix at the time and it was before flash crudified the Internet)

XP wasn't 'good' until around service pack 2, which also required a way beefier computer than a stock xp install did to run well. XP also had plenty of migration problems from 98, way more than vista did, and was still more buggy and insecure than any OS has a right to be.

I like 7 a lot but I would have been fine sticking with Vista. Its just I got 7 for free thanks to MS testing programs and then the house party deal.

So this thread is now about people who get nice and comfy with what they're used to and therefore hate anything new, right?

It is a quite logical to not spend money without an actual reason. I also need a damn good reason to spend the time reinstalling everything on my PC. For me it was Direct X 10... MS was quite smart not upgrading XP/2000 with direct x 10 because most people had perfectly great OS already in place.

Vista is fine NOW, but it had some pretty glaring issues at release. Of course XP did as well and most people were comparing stable XP vs. brand new unstable Vista so it was pretty unfair. Still, Vista had issues for a while at release for more users than expected.

I'm going crazy because I can't use Ultra VNC in Win7...it works fine until I have to give Windows permission to continue...I can't do that on the remote machine. It has to be done from the server which is a huge pain in the dick when it's in the office and I'm in the living room.

Other than that, I've had no problems with either Vista or Windows 7 so far. Come to think of it, I really had no problems with XP either.

I never switch to another MS OS until it's at SP1 level or better. I was gonna be an XP diehard, but then I sold off my core PC guts about a year ago and went with Vista for the new stuff.

I can't complain, works great for me. I'll adopt 7 once I sell of this current set of PC guts, and send Vista off with it.

Vista was much better after the first service pack came out but imo Windows 7 puts it to shame.

of course with a new interface you're gonna have to get used to some changes.

The only thing that bothers me about Windows 7 right now is that I do not have a show desktop icon in the bottom left. There is one in the bottom right corner, but it just isn't the same.

Yes, I am adjusting. Oh well, it will grow on me.

I was a huge fan of that icon until I switched to dual screen. I wish it would only minimize one screen but it does both so it's kind of useless at that point. It takes a while to go without.

Vista SP3 still doesn't work on some of my hardware. The drivers just aren't there, still! I have a DFI board with gigabit lan. The standard MS drivers only allow 100mbit, and the DFI drivers hard crashed my system and required a rebuild of windows.

I used vista when it was Longhorn, and then Vista pre-sp1. Both seemed "okay" for normal usage, but the more gaming and intensive tasks the more it bogged down. I've used SP3 on the system above, and it was fine, except a few driver issues.

I never really had a problem with Vista 64 but installed Win 7 64 because I wanted to be able to play back 1080p at 30FPS which Vista cannot do.

Well, Win 7 destroyed my PC. I had to format my old HDD and reinstall everything again and Win 7 still doesn't work right. My PC is laggy, it takes forever to open up files and I can't seem to have more than one Internet using program running at the same time. On top of that, it cannont play back 1080p at 30FPS which was the reason for me to upgrade.

Does the "WinKey + D" still work?

Been using Windows 7 Pro 64 on a new rig since October. About 3x faster than XP in my experience and no problems whatsoever that couldn't be solved by some combination of compatibility mode and 3rd party emulators.

I used Vista briefly on my laptop. The big issue with it was the huge jump in system requirements and the driver mess. You can blame hardware manufacturers but Microsoft should have been better prepared. It's not like the 9x to XP transition where they were working on a different kernel architecture. XP was a total mess, granted. Most of Vista issues were fixed in SP1. For me, Vista never really offered any real improvements over XP, plus it ran slower.

I like Windows 7 so I'll be sticking with it for a while.

Tried Windows XP Mode? No UAC required.
