at all the unnecessary bashing that people gave it when it first came out.

i guess when it first came out there were driver issues, but i just did a few installs on some machines and the experience is less cumbersome and annoying than with the last few XP installs i've done.
with vista, system comes up in 30 mins and ready to go.
XP, need to find a floppy for the ahci driver, click through several screens when it's installing, hunt down multiple drivers before connecting to the internet, and then doing countless updates (yes, i know about slipstreaming, then i would have to keep creating new slipstreaming images). if i dont have a floppy guess what, gotta install in standard mode then do the ahci 'hack'.

people seriously need to get off the hate train and give a good product credit where it's due

I've used it since release, and I prefer it to Win7. I have a copy of Win7 I doubt I'll ever use.

granted, i like win7 way more than vista, but it got a great reception when it came out, so that's not the point of my thread. everyone was bashing how complicated vista was and how it sucked so bad and always "crashed my pc woe is me". i've never had an experience with it that even resembles the shit that spews out of their mouths. and i've done installs on some pretty mediocre specced systems.

doing a windows xp install was always such a huge hassle with all the hoops and stuff you'd have to jump through.

With Vista I just have a couple of minor annoyances but otherwise it's fine. I don't see a reason to jump to Windows 7 on these machines yet.

I've found all the NT Windows to be solid releases. There's been bugs at first, but that can be expected with any complicated software package. They mostly get worked out in the end. Win7's alright, I just prefer some of the small things with Vista, and they're close enough that I can't be bothered to upgrade.

I'm ready to move on from Vista. The worst part about it for me is networking. . many of the names of networking tools are redundant or vague, and basic tools are made too difficult to find. Its symptomatic of the larger problem people have with Vista, which is that by dumbing it down for the lowest denominator they made it much more difficult for people who know how to use a computer.

The more I use Vista, the more I want to kill whoever wrote the part of the OS that deals with printers. Why the fuck does the print spooler crash so often???

I've been trying to fix this for years and I still haven't found a solution. google: "vista print spoooler"

This. I cannot stand the networking sections.

I thought it was bad in XP, but Vista/7 are worse x infinity

Edit: and while we're on the topic, WTF is going on with the output of ipconfig? This is absolutely the most annoying thing ever.

If anyone knows how to suppress that, please tell me. I'm tired of using 'ipconfig | more' 50x per day.

Vista wouldn't install on my PC so I hated it. I actually liked Windows 7, until last week when it stopped working. Now it starts to load, I hear the windows theme music and see nothig but black. If I wait I get a BSOD and it restarts. The ONE time it gave me an option to attempt to fix the problem. It did it's scanning bullshit and told me "we didn't detect any problem" so I reboot 10 times, and every time, windows music -> black screen for 10 minutes -> CRASH! I booted to my Win 7 DVD to try a repair install. It ran some bullshit tests and came back telling me if I wished to upgrade my Windows 7 that I needed to boot into Windows 7 and re-run the DVD. REALLY? FUCKERS! Now I have a system where I can't seem to find a way to fix my broken Windows that MS's wonderful diag program is telling me is fine. I've been on computers since DOS, yet I can't get Windows 7 to allow me to do an upgrade/repair install. I don't overclock anything and my hardware's all well reviewed.

FUCK WINDOWS VISTA & 7! Ubuntu might not have any of the software I use, but I bet it will never fuck up on me. I will live without the software I used on Windows to not have to deal with bulllshit like this.

With Vista I couldn't even get it to install because it didn't like my IDE ports. POS

Before the last <windows needs your permission to continue> service pack the <windows needs your permission to continue> Windows Security Center was a little <windows needs your permission to continue> annoying, and it wasn't <windows needs your permission to continue> completely compatible with WinXP apps.

My networking experience with windows was always a headache. especially on my work computer, where they set up to connect to a ton of drives and stuff upon bootup that you can't remove. if the drive no longer exists, windows just hangs there and then 2 hours later will say "omg drive does not exist sorry we made you wait so long lol!!!!" and then finish booting up. im sure 7 and vista have this same lame ass problem or similar as well

I've used Vista for over 1-1/2 years, and other than some minor "learning curve" issues that are common when changing os's, I've really only had two complaints with Vista.

  1. Hardware compatibility issues
My Creative Live! sound card wasn't compatible...and no functional work-around.
  2. Software compatibility issues
Several "older," pre-Vista programs not compatible. No patches available.

Neither of those are uncommon when upgrading os's, and IMO, neither one is a big issue...just minor pains in the ass...

Overall, I LIKE Vista. It works well on my rig even though most of the newest components are from 2003-2004. (some go back to 98-99)

MSI P35 MB, 2 gigs Crucial DDR2, WD & Seagate IDE HD. I purpously stayed away from any cutting edge components so not to run into any problems. I can't blame my Win 7 problems on any of my hardware as Ubuntu runs flawlessly. And if its a driver issue Windows 7 has MUCH better driver support than Ubuntu. But oddly enough, every device in my PC worked in Ubuntu without me having to install a single driver. I put in the CD, clicked install, and came back 20 minutes later to have everything from my sound card to my printer already ready to go. Wonder why MS can't get to this point?

I understand Windows Vista & 7 work great for most people. But I'm one of the ones where one didn't work at all and the other worked for a few months and took a huge non fixable crap on me. A clean install isn't my idea of "fixing" the problem. So I threw my Windows 7 DVD in the trash and will learn how to use Linux.

It's kind of frustrating, but oh well. People love to spread misinformation, not really much you can do about it unless you're Microsoft and have the advertising budget to inform people of the misconceptions. And not to say that Vista was perfect, it had some issues. Fortunately Win 7 seems to have addressed some of them. Even early on, Vista was far more polished than XP, though. Unfortunately it was plagued by poor drivers.

Even today Vista still has the stigma of being slow, unstable, etc.

To be fair, neither of those are really Microsoft issues. Creative didn't bother releasing stable Vista drivers for their older cards to force people to upgrade to newer ones. Then some guy modifies the Creative drivers to support these older cards in Vista, and they threaten legal action. Really, really shady stuff on Creative's part. There was no technical reason the cards wouldn't work in Vista, they just weren't going to bother adding driver support for them before the situation turned into a PR nightmare.

Same deal with older software. If the developers aren't going to bother adding support for newer operating systems, that's on them, not Microsoft.

I agree, I've had issues with printer sharing (doesn't work). And all of the file sharing options seem excessive.

I can't blame my Win 7 problems on any of my hardware as Ubuntu runs flawlessly.

You *do* realize that different operating systems can expose hardware failures or cope with hardware failures in very different ways, right?

Just like with XP, it took MS two service packs to turn Vista into a decent OS. I don't understand why everyone seems to forget how bad XP was at first.

Memtest says my memory's fine
Spinrite says my HD's
the stress test I ran for 24 hours tells me my CPU + video card are fine.
Every other diagnostic program I've ran has come back saying everything's good.

Windows 7 BSOD's when I try to load it, and when I run the repair option Microsoft has so graciously given me, it tells me there are no problems with my system. I understand hardware and I know how different OS's can make different shit happen. But, nothing else I've ran has given me any problem. So, I pretty much have to pin the problem on Windows 7 and not my hardware. Mind you I've ran at least 2 dozen different diagnostic programs to find a problem that seemingly doesn't exist.

My guess would be a bad/corrupted driver that's loading at startup.

Actually XP was pretty damn good from day 1. Windows 98 was a pile of shit and my computer crashed an average of 3 times per day. I bought XP in mid 2002 and the crashing completely stopped. It was a memory hog, but at least it worked.

Agreed, people's hate for Vista is unfounded. I'd be willing to bet that most people that bitch about it have never even tried it. just jumping on the hate bandwagon.

Curious, I'm planning on upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7. I plan to image my existing boot drive to a new drive(use it as my new boot drive).

Should I download and save drivers on the hdd first or will I be fine doing it after the install?

Doubtful, Safe Mode doesn't work either, and that's supposed to be the fail safe way to get into Windows when a drive is bad or corrupt. All I know is I'm never touching another Microsoft OS again after this ordeal. Ubuntu is actually faster on my PC, has a nicer interface with better graphical effects and has never crashed on me once.
