Actually XP was pretty damn good from day 1. Windows 98 was a pile of shit and my computer crashed an average of 3 times per day. I bought XP in mid 2002 and the crashing completely stopped. It was a memory hog, but at least it worked.

By then there were a lot of updates already available, and drivers were maturing, but it still wasn't until SP2 that a vanilla install was decent and secure enough to connect directly to the net. Just because it was better than Win98 doesn't mean it was a solid and secure OS.

Agreed, people's hate for Vista is unfounded. I'd be willing to bet that most people that bitch about it have never even tried it. just jumping on the hate bandwagon.

I bitched about it enough, and it was warranted. SP1 wouldn't install, even though it would take 4 hours and get to Stage 3 @ 100% before failing and reverting. Powering down or rebooting required holding the power button down. There were a few other minor issues as well. Local networking was one of them.

Now that SP2 is installed (format drive, install Vista, SP1, then SP2), it just works. Don't mistake that for me being a fan, though.

The only issue I have had with Vista is sharing a printer on an XP machine.

I've yet to use Vista or Win7. All 3 of my home PC's are running XP and I'm thinking of making one of them a Linux box.

Still using XP at work too. At my last job they couldn't get all our apps to work with Vista so we never upgraded to it.

To date there have only been two versions of Windows I actually went out and purchased within weeks of their release. First was Windows 98 (because Windows 95 was complete shit) and the second was Windows XP.

Never had a problem with Vista, but I waited until the first major update to install it...

I have been happy with Vista. Back when XP was released everybody bitched and moaned about it and talked up how great 98SE was. Every time Microsoft releases a new version of Windows people bitch about it simply for the sake of bitching.

The only exception may be Windows ME - that really was a hunk of burning rat shit of an OS.

I never knew anyone who bitches and moaned about XP nor wished they were still using 98se. 98/ME was struggling from its DOS roots and it was a breath of fresh air to be using an NT based OS (even though there were a few software compatibility issues to start out with). I installed XP on day one and it was bliss.

A lot of the bitching was unfounded, but many criticisms were based on reality. I ran Vista for a while and it worked, but 7 seems to be a lot more polished. Of course, by the time 7 came out, a lot of hardware manufacturers had better support for that driver model. Too many were caught with their pants down when Vista came out (either that, or they were pulling planned obsolescence shenanigans).

just goes to show how a botched launch can ruin a product. so much that MS had to rebrand it as "Windows 7".

I had Vista on my laptop for a bit and it was fine. I have 7 now and I absolutely love it. Maybe it's just psychological, but my Win7 machines seem easier for me to use than my family's Vista stuff - then again I've hardly spent any time with Vista. Or..maybe it's because my systems are clean and fast, not full of HP/Compaq bloatware. :p

Now that we have Windows 7, I thought we've made a pass on that issue.

Anyway, think about how XP was bashed.

Never had any problems with Vista. Been great for me since day one. I'm one of those few people who actually make sure everything I use has drivers for the new OS before I upgrade.

Never had an issue with Vista. Vista seems to just have been bashed because Microsoft bashing was "cool".

Vista hate was not unfounded. It's bloated and different with a steep learning curve as any major OS redesign would be. Some like the redesign some don't. What was unfounded was the sheep jumping on hate bandwagon while at the same time loving the new, essentially identical, windows 7.

Vista is better than 7 IMO only because they allow classic and casacding start menu as an option that some numbnuts at MS decided to strip in 7.

I ended up buying a new printer because Konica Minolta never bothered to make x64 drivers. I like the new one better anyway, though. :p

Not even close.

All they bitched about was the fisher price teletubbies look - easily reverted to 98/2000 look in control panel - and could use similar resources as 98/2000 striping out messenger, media player and ie and tuning off XP's new services.

These OS's are fundamentally different on the resource requirements side and you can't make explorer/search/start panes operate like old. XP to Vista/7 is more analogous to 3.11 to 95 rather than 2000 to XP which used same kernel.

Doubtful, Safe Mode doesn't work either, and that's supposed to be the fail safe way to get into Windows when a drive is bad or corrupt. All I know is I'm never touching another Microsoft OS again after this ordeal. Ubuntu is actually faster on my PC, has a nicer interface with better graphical effects and has never crashed on me once.

I like Ubuntu a lot. If it weren't for the occasional game, I'd probably switch over. I use Linux on all of my secondary computers.

Turn off UAC and vista's fine. I think one of the service packs is supposed to tone down the "are you sure you want to..." prompts without necessitating UAC deactivation anyway, but I never left it on long enough to find out. I've never had a single hardware or software problem otherwise. Games seem to run just as fast as in XP or nearly so. Stability seems to be on par with XP. The changes in the networking section and sharing and such aren't too annoying and can be made to work like they did in XP more or less. No complaints here.

The only problem i ever had with Vista is it was such a resource hog. Needed at least 4GB RAM and 1GB Video to work nicely.

Then again.. i had Vista Ultimate.

I'm quite happy with my Win7Ultimate too.

The problem I have with Vista is that it takes me a minute to do something where it took me less than 15 seconds to do on XP mainly because Microsoft decided to change the way you configure things. Also, another thing I despise of Vista is during file copies/transfers, it tries to "intelligently" group files that are duplicates and whatnot together which makes it take much longer.
