"The Mist" is a terrible movie

OK, so I don't really think I've done this before, but I jsut watched the move "The Mist" based of some Stephen King novel and it was so freaking terrible I just had to make a thread in order to tell the world just how bad this movie is. The sad part is that it has such a good premise with a spooky mist comming down and trapping a group of people and it turns out there are scary monsters all in the mist and such. But then you realise that its one of these preachy movies and it ends up making Christians out to be a bunch of evil Nazi and most everyone else to be retarded. But then it gets even worse, once the non religous nuts get out from where they are trepped they drive off and guess what happens when their car runs out of gas and they are still in the mist? No they don't jump in one of the other 100 cars they have seen, nor do they go back into hidding, nor do they try to escape on foot, no in fact they all decide 30 seconds after running out of gas that its better to commit suiscide then try to escape. And of course all of 60 seconds later the cavalry arives and its all better.

So GIANT holes in the plot:

- "normal" people portrayed as total retards
- psycho religious woman converts entire market into religious zealot killers in 2 days
- man shoots his own kid and 3 other people when they run out of gas even though there are cars all over the place and they know they could just hide in a house and be safe
- Also, all the characters are cardboard cutout stereotypes.

OK, just had to get that out there, if anyone wants to agree we can diss this movie together, if anyone wants to disagree I can jsut make fun of you I guess 😛.

EDIT: oh yeah and on IMDB it has like a 7.6, how the hell did that happen? Usually IMDB isn't all that bad, but sometimes they seem way out there (IE: STALKER).

I think your "giant" holes are what the movie is really supposed to be about--a mob mentality. When people don't understand what is going on they look towards some type of explaination. What would you do if you saw a giant tenticle rip the chest off another dude. It probably wouln't be "Interesting. What would be a logical choice for me to get out of this situation." But more like "HOLY FUCKING SHIT!"

I can tell you two things I sure as heck wouldn't do. One would be to become a religous nut, the other would be to kill myself.

I sure as heck would freak out, but TBH I would have just stayed my ass put in the fetal position hoping help arrived and had I done that in THIS movie I would have survived. Just in case you didn't notice it was the fools trying to be heros who all died, not the people who set on their asses. Thats just another reason why this movie, they had all the food they needed and the bad guys seemed fine with staying away for the most part except when they went out and provoked them.

I loved the short story when I read it years ago.

Watched the movie last night and I thought it was actually pretty good EXCEPT for the ending. That was different than the book and I didn't really get the point of the movie's ending frankly. Other than that though I thought it captured the essence of the story pretty well.

i thought this movie was awesome.

the acting was great in this movie as well. i loved how there was no music throughout the entire movie, up until towards the very end, and it was almost gladiator like music.

i thought the ending was completely badass too.

it's just 1 completely f-ed up movie.

Blame it on Stephen King, he wrote the story and the movie follows his story pretty closely. I agree, the characterization pretty much sucks, as do most of King's characters. He tends to go over the top with the stereotyping, especially with the "bad guys". I think the ending was different from what King wrote, but I can't remember exactly how it ended in the story, I read it so long ago.

The ending was the only good part of the movie. The dude killed off 3 annoying characters. Now if he had only jumped in front of a tank and gotten squished, it would've been perfect.

King especially goes over the top with the religious zealotry stuff in some of his books. Look at Carrie for instance. It works in one sense though in that you've got to go to the extremes and make people do stupid stuff or there isn't much to write about I guess.

Just saw the movie... That ending... Wow.. I cant decide if its brilliant or completely stupid/pointless

I wouldnt give it a 7.5, I think the movie failed to go anywhere, although it did a good job on the creepy atmosphere... And the best moment was without a doubt the fanatical bitch getting shot, it was worth enduring the whole movie just for that moment 😀

Liked the movie.
And the way the mob reacted is actually pretty accurate.
People will flock to anyone who can promise them a way out whenever they are scared. 'cough' Bush
Ending was stupid.
I might be scared in the situation with the car, but I damn sure am going to get out and try and make it anyway, creatures or not.

i thought the ending was badass. major credit goes to the studio for greenlighting it. i get tired of the everything-is-wrapped-up-in-a-nice-pretty-bow endings. now if you dont mind im going to watch that twilight zone episode with burgess meredith and after that 'se7en'. 😉

I LOVE movies that don't end in the "traditional" good guys win bad guys lose sort of way, I LOVE twist endings, but in order for this to work it still has to be believable. Its not that the ending is sad (this is a good thing in my mind), its not that there is a twist (also a positive in my mind), its that it makes no sense at all. I mean I consider myself to be easily "emotionally invested" in a movie where I actually can "suspend disbelief" and care about the characters, but this movie didn't work. Lets just skip all the carboard cutout characters and the unplausible religous overtaking of the store and skip to the ending. The main character and his group of people who have turned out the be the most rational among the survivors run out of gas while escaping from the monsters. But instead of getting a new car, or hiding in another building or proceeding on foot they decide to kill themselves. So the main charcter, an educated rational man kill 4 innocent people inculding how own SON for what? So they can avoid being killed by a monster? Even if they had resigned themslves that the world was over they could have survived weeks in any sort of solid structure and just waited and hoped that someone was comming. Maybe if the movie ended with them having run out of food and killing themslves to avoid starvation thats one thing, but not even trying to survive goes agasint every fiber of my being and I cannot accept that any rational person would take suiscide over even attempting to survive this situation. They really gave up on life after 2 days of being trapped in a supermarket? Its like if your watching Star Wars and instead of attacking the Death Star Luke just says "oh fuck this our chances suck" and blows his head off.

I too agree with the part of the annoying christian fanatic converter lady. They should have focused more on scary monster/bugs and less on grocery-mob. But DAMN did it feel good when the guy shot the crazy christian fanatic lady in the stomach AND BOOM! Headshot!

My favorite was when the old teacher hit her with the can of peas. "In the bible, when someone pisses you off, you're allowed to stone them, right? Well I got plenty of peas!"

I don't think you'd feel the same way if you experienced what they did--the trauma of seeing people brutally tortured and murdered around you, people turning on each other. I mean they drove an entire tank of gas worth and saw nothing but overturned cars and dead bodies. For all they know, it's all over, the entire area or even world has succumbed to the mist. And seeing the way these people painfully died (and hearing their screams), it's not implausible to want to give up the (seemingly) tiny chance of survival to avoid the large chance of a painful fate. Granted, I was hoping they would wait it out for 24 hours in the car at least, but it wasn't irrational.

He killed off 4--the old guy, the old teacher, the motherly woman, and his son. Which wasn't annoying? I loved the little boy, thought the blonde was great, and found the old lady hilarious. I guess I didn't find any of the characters (besides the irrational zealots) annoying. I found many endearing, esp Ollie and the checkout clerk.

Um, what about when the bugs and pterodactyls invaded the store? I mean you could say it was the light that attracted them, but they couldn't have felt safe in the market. I mean under the circumstances if they all had just sat in the back of the store quietly for as long as the food would last, they probably would have been ok, but it's not like they were never threatened.

Question, though--how did they patch up that entirely smashed window? They couldn't have fixed that with duct tape, but the broken window never comes back into play.

And for everyone who disliked the religious aspect of the movie--while I found the characters annoying (as it was intended), and while I think it came across as a satire/critique of the religious right too much, I enjoyed the social commentary it was trying to make--that in the right environment, people will act in otherwise incomprehensible ways. You make people scared enough and give them a plausible explanation, and they'll be willing to follow whatever you'll say. I mean sometimes a good monster movie with no greater meaning is fun, but I like how this movie tried to make a statement.

I thought it was a decent movie, and liked the way it showed how humans can be just as monstrous as real monsters.

exactly. i took from it that it wasnt so much a heavy-handed religious message but more of what's truly scary: the monsters we know about outside or the monsters we dont at first see growing in the inside.

Cliff notes: OP had no clue what was going on.

Same here, although since I haven't yet watched the movie, I'm not reading too far into this thread 🙂

You lose, good day sir.

Your reply was what made the thread so full of fail. At least say WHY you disagree with the OP

I thought the movie looked shitty so I didn't see it. Enough said

In case noone noticed right at the beginning of the movie the main character was painting a movie poster for The Dark Tower. It was a pretty badass looking poster. Then the storm comes and it gets all torn up.

Darabont (sp?) had always wanted to work on the Dark Tower movie, should King have allowed it to be made, but instead King sold the rights to the movie (for next to nothing mind you) to JJ Abrams.

I could very well be looking way too deeply into things but it seems like Darabont viewed himself as creating this amazing piece of art in the Dark Tower movie, and when King gave it to Abrams it was like he'd torn his to shreds. The character also said something along the lines of, "They'll just throw something together on photoshop." to make the new one. Perhaps a little resentment?

That could also explain the ending not following the book. He may have just been so pissed off with King he figured he'd end it how he wanted it to end.
