Lynch expressly refers to what she feels to be the military using her 'dramatic rescue' for positive publicity. She said nothing about the military contributing to conflicting and inaccurate accounts of her ordeal. Two separate issues.

As for the military 'manipulating' the story of her rescue, well there is really no basis for that part of her statement. The military's account of her rescue has been accurate. They went in, retrieved her, and left. Not much to 'manipulate' about that.

Again, it all falls into the media's lap.

Perhaps. But I'd be willing to bet the military has some ties with the media to help promote their self image. They probably knew what the media would do with the story and helped fuel it. Lynch knows more about it than me and you combined and she's the one blaming the military. Otherwise she'd mention the media too. Of course it's just my opinion and could very well be wrong.

But it doesn't matter who's to blame as much as the fact that this crap actually happened. This is simply unacceptable.

Criticizing the military for using her rescue to generate some positive publicity, not 'blaming' the military for anything.

Lynch believes the military should not have filmed the rescue at all, let alone release it to the press. And so her criticism flows from her rather unmeritorious principal opposition to the rescue being filmed in the first place. Once she came to hold this principal objection, of course she will by extension object to the film's release and subsequent use. Her principal objection leaves no other possibility.

*edit* I suppose the one thing MAME and I can agree on is that the news-media machine in this country sucks; sensationalist style news pisses me off to no end. We're all in agreement that the news exaggerated her story, where I think we disagree is the military's role. You have quoted several people who disagree with the military's version of events and perhaps with their handling of the events (example: recording the rescue). I have seen no evidence, nor any convincing arguments that would make me believe these people's opinions (and this is what they are, just opinions, not facts) over the military's version of events and handling of the situation. For example, Jessica Lynch says she has no recollection of being sexually assaulted. Why didn't she just say that she knew for a fact that she wasn't sexually assaulted? The two doctors who saw no evidence of sexual assault. Here, U.S. sources say that she was, Iraqi doctors say that she wasn't. I see no real reason why someone would choose one version of events over the other (at this point in time), but perhaps there is a reason: because some people are so eager to believe that the U.S. is lying, they will believe what they want without being objective. These are the kind of people who have no problem using Al-Jazeera news stories as a source for their arguments. To speculate about why the military filmed the rescue is pointless, and thus to form an argument based on the implication (by Jessica Lynch)that the filming was politically-motivated is unjustified. In my opinion, the foundations of your argument (we are being lied to) are merely the opinions of people who are not sources of authority on the matter they are discussing.

Perhaps you guys don't understand what I am trying to emphasize?

The people have been lied to. If it is not taken seriously, the people who are responsible will do it again and again. What if no one comes forward like Lynch and we are fed more lies in the future? What if, in order to get higher ratings, the media spews whatever they see fit?

It's not ok for this sort of thing to happen. When I say "it's not debatable" I am SOLEY refering to being lied to. Not whether or not we should go to war, or if Bush is good or bad. I am ultra non-political and as such I do not attempt to tell people how dumb they are if they don't agree with me.

I did not make this thread to argue about politics ergo I did not post it in the P&N forum. I definately respect everyone's view point about many things but I think everyone can agree that this SHOULD NOT HAPPEN.
