I caught the first episode on Amazon - Looks very promising and I hope they decide to pick up the series. It's based on a Philip K Dick story.

Thoughts on the show and/or the novel?

Never read the book, but also caught the pilot on Amazon. I thought it had a promise! I'd totally be in for a season of it should they choose to move forward with it.

I think I saw it a couple of weeks ago. Its kinda interesting, and explores something I always wondered about: How long the German/Japanese alliance would have lasted had they won the war. I kinda think the Japanese would pre-emptively attack again, but the Germans in the pilot are on top of things. I hope it gets picked up.

Funny. This review was spot on about this point for me when I was watching it.

One might expect to be able to remain detached while watching this, but I found myself becoming increasingly uncomfortable. And I mean that in a good way. Watching our conquered citizenry suffer under a cruel draconian rule that we've never had to endure, even if imagined, was still creepily potent. And at the same time, the huge premise never swallows up the smaller stories.

Watched it last night. Pleasantly surprised it got green lit today and can't wait for more.

^That's great news, if true. I wonder about the budget for such a series, especially for a non-network show. I suppose the pilot had a bigger budget to look good, and the later episodes may be less fancy.

My fave Dick book ever!
You had to go there. :colbert:

Finally got around to watching the pilot episode. I haven't read the book, but have been intrigued by the series/idea. I loved the pilot and thought it was pretty solidly done. Happy to see it was green lit -- but do we know when the season is due out?

Bosch felt like it had a good budget.

I really enjoyed the pilot which I posted briefly about above, but hadn't read the book. Well, I went and read the book. Ummm... yeah, hated the book. Really didn't seem to have a whole lot to do with the tv pilot honestly other than the general setting. Book was generally boring as hell with one of the lamest endings ever. I'm sure I'm probably in the minority with my opinion, as I noticed people claimed it was his best work? I like Dick as an author in general, but this one just missed its mark on me. Wanted to give up halfway through but made myself finish it. Wish I had just given up lol.

Just binge watched the first season of The Man in The High Castle.

Really liked it myself, I thought it got much better as it progressed.

8.3/10

Speaking of Amazon pilots, does anyone know if Sneaky Pete starring Giovanni Ribisi will be picked up for a full season?

No idea, but I'll be checking that one out also.

*edit*

Bryan Cranston's Sneaky Pete pilot for Amazon to get full series

The Breaking Bad star might be more associated with dark drama, but the new show he has co-created has the breezy feel of an old-fashioned network TV show – and is all the better for it
For all its merits, the Golden Age of TV has become a pretty oppressive place to live. Without knowing it, we’ve become walled in by millions of tortured dramas about troubled men driven to do terrible things, each striving to be more tortured and troubled and terrible than the last.
Tomorrow, for instance, Amazon will release Hand of God, a series about a mentally ill judge who decides to become a brutal vigilante following his son’s botched suicide attempt. Even if you really like dark dramas, that’s an incredibly dark jumping-off point; one that you’re unlikely to be able to manage without at least a couple of stiff drinks and a decent run-up. »

Have watched most of Hand of God also myself, but personally I'd give that one a 6.0/10

It just seems to struggle a lot to me, here and there.

Glad Sneaky Pete got picked up.

Man in the High Castle is on my watchlist but I need to get through Vikings S3 first.

Thoughts on the show and/or the novel?

The Man in the High Castle (1962) is an alternate history novel by American writer Philip K. Dick. Set in 1962, fifteen years after an alternate ending to World War II in which the war lasted until 1947, the novel concerns intrigues between the victorious Axis Powers—Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany—as they rule over the former United States

weekly series or did amazon release it all at once?

It's very weird. They released a pilot back in January, an additional episode in October, and the rest yesterday. I guess they were deciding whether they wanted to bother with the rest of the series.

I prefer Netflix's approach. Don't test the waters. Have faith and greenlight at least one season. Half-assing things just makes it less likely that people are going to be interested.

I agree. I watched the couple of episodes that were on Amazon at the time and they were "OK." I probably would have watched the remainder, but this was a few weeks ago before the rest of them were out. The first couple of episodes weren't good enough for me to put this up on my list of shit to go back and watch.

In other news, Hand of God sucked. I haven't watched Sneaky Pete. Bosch is excellent.
