Wait, what?

So the guy known for not answering plot issues picks up source material that does the same?

Read this article:

So the departed group just disappeared? So glad I checked out early on this one.

The book never explained what happened, to my knowledge. But, it wasn't about the actual departure as much as it was about how a small town was reacting to circumstances that changed their lives. It was not a MacGuffin, but a plot device to set up things.

I wouldn't be shocked if how the people disappeared and where they went never gets answered.

I think the GR is the only group that realizes why certain people disappeared. It's because, at the moment when it happened, someone was thinking/wishing how much easier their life would be without those people. Nora was worn out by her family. Kevin was embarrassed about the lady he hooked up with. Laurie didn't really want the baby. The GR understands that WE are to blame and wants everyone to remember the way they felt that day, before it happened.

I have absolutely no idea about Wayne, the dogs, and the ghosts/aliens/MacGuffins trying to control the Garvey men.

I like that hypothesis.

Eh, the Pope left. Who was sitting around thinking "man, my life sure would be better if that damned pope was outta here!" Sure, it seems like a plausible reasoning at first, but nobody really knows.

Holy Wayne was just another wanna be messiah. He had no powers, none of the babies were special. He was just a black guy with a fetish for Asian teenagers. None of the people he healed were better, they were pretending; Nora even says as much.

Also, wtf was up with the priest just blindly helping him bury a body.

Because the priest if provoked properly might actually have killed her himself. Chief Garvey as far as we know wouldn't do that unless perhaps in his sleepwalk state.

I suspect that my reasoning above is probably correct. Other people online seemed to agree. My issue with it is that ONLY 2% of the population disappeared. I think the writer underestimates how much hate most people harbor.

I thought it was 10%, not 2%? And, that might be who was chosen. But it still doesn't explain why or how it happened.

this is how I feel

Same. Thought the finale was good too, but the very end just felt weird.. like not the usual weird this show made us used to. Also the part where Kevin fell asleep and dreamed about being put in a mental hospital was kind of confusing and took a lot of time for something that technically didn't happen except in his mind. I want to see him when he's truly not himself, like with the "they're not our dogs anymore" guy, who I still can't figure out if he really exists.

I think that's the best theory I've seen for the show.

I thought they pretty much laid that out and wasn't even a question, especially supported with Nora's family and Laura's baby.

My only question about that was exactly as stated, do you really think that only 2% of the population is really getting on someone's nerves?

I think that's pretty much spot on. Even the minor characters...the baby crying in the car...the older couple with a son that had Down Syndrome (or another mental deficiency...can't remember for sure). Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I'm sure it wasn't every single person that someone else wished was gone at that exact moment...but some of them and the show focuses on those.
