The internet is dead in canada... 25gb cap for everybody

it is their solution to avoid investing in infrastructure to keep up with the demand. it will fail, just a matter of time.

sad thing is that they probably noticed that 90% of people does not use 25GB today, and decided to screw other 10% right away.

It just really sucks cus EVERYTHING is going digital download. If you have an Xbox or PS3, say goodbye to buying any game with any decent regularity over their network and of course Netlflix, Vudu, Hulu, anything good.

I queue shit up over night so I can watch videos the next day without lag. Some of them are pretty big. One of the youtube guys I'm following started uploading stuff in HD, so just a simple 5 minute video is like 200mb. It's insane. That cap will be hit within a week for most people.
 
still at 200gb a month with teksavvy. hope this doesn't change because I easily go over 150 every month....
 
🙁 I average 100GB/mnth now. 200GB this month 🙁 No it's not porn. It's torrents of TV shows. Parents curretnly pay for the internet connection I'm using, yeah need to move out I know I know, I think we pay about $50/mth currently (plus or minus). I believe Shaw has cap of 100GB/mnth on the account we are paying for 15/1 up/dwn but I've gone over 100 many times and they never said anything.

my cap is 60gb per month from Rogers.

Since Empornium shut down, my bandwidth usage is next to nothing.

The sad part is that eventually all of the networks will reach a point where they can easily handle all the bandwidth we could ever use... but since the pricing structures are already in place the consumer won't see any benefit.

At that point we will be getting charged for literally nothing... 1 and 0's traveling across a line that costs the same if its off or 100% full...
 
One way to get the ISPs to back off of their ridiculously low caps is to BLOCK ALL ADS to save bandwidth. This will at least get the advertisers on your side. I recommend replacing your hosts file with this one (with the added benefit of blocking malicious sites as well). More info here.

In the meantime, you can save more bandwidth with Opera Turbo (available in Opera 11).
 
This is what happens when you allow monopolies. I thought they were illegal, yet governments are always making exceptions. Corruption is everywhere.

Aside from Steam this wouldn't be a big deal for me, but I know my mom watches a lot of TV and movies online and I do download seasons of some shows.

And don't forget to delete your system32 folder, it wastes tons of bandwidth. I deleted mine and my bandwidth usage went down from 80gb to 50.

I think that adding a cap like this would instantly nullify your contract with the provider, as it would be considered to be a "material change" to the agreement.

You wouldn't need to sue, just a talk with the manager when you cancel your account should be enough... especially if you start throwing around words like "breach of contract" and "attorney general" in the conversation.

It will also slow down the evolution and development of cloud-based services, music and movie streaming and remote storage. No point in developing bandwidth-hungry applications and services when 90% of your potential users are capped and can't use them. Instead of moving to blu-ray and 20+GB downloads from Steam, games will still come in at 6 - 8GB max even years from now, so that people can actually get them downloaded over their capped connections.

Currently, only a minority of early adopters take full advantage of the bandwidth available with today's high-speed connections, but without artificial caps and restrictions, that number would have increased over time.
