That's a lot of porn...

actually its not alot of anything..

HD porn is about 1-2gigs per file a Steam game is anywhere from 2-6gigs or more.. even WoW and other MMO patches can be up to 10gigs

and HD streaming.. yah that's alot of bandwidth very quickly..

wow uses shit for bandwidth unless you are downloading the game install itself

Upload is less than 1kb, but download is often around 15kb/s. Playing a standard 20 hour day of h4x0rcraft consumes 1.03gb

(15kb/s * 3600 s/h * 20 hours / 1024 / 1024 = 1.03)

High def porn files (720p and 1080p) are 1-4GB each.

What do you mean, internet porn?

I am with Eastlink here in the Halifax region. I use the extreme 15 internet package. From what I cant tell there will be no cap on my service but strangely, the higher end packages, internet 30 and internet 100 will be capped. Here are the fine prints for internet 30:

1. Upload and download speeds can be affected by computer set-up, Internet traffic or other factors. Call for availability. 2. Billing for EastLink Internet 30 is $10.00 per month plus taxes (in a bundle) or $87.95 per month as a stand alone product. Professional installation fees of $19.95 apply. 3. In the coming months, EastLink will implement monthly usage of 250 GB, as well as provide access to tools for customers to monitor their usage and plan accordingly. At that time, a $1.00/additional GB, rounded up to the nearest GB will be applied. Monthly internet usage limits will not apply to EastLink High Speed Internet 5 or Extreme 15 internet products. 4. This service does not protect against viruses spread through applications other than e-mail. Use of EastLink High Speed Internet service is subject to EastLink's Terms & Conditions and High Speed Internet Acceptable Use Policy. Some conditions apply. All prices before taxes. Call for availability in your area.

I use about 200 GB per month now if not more so this is good news but I have a feeling they will change this policy.

And don't forget to delete your system32 folder, it wastes tons of bandwidth. I deleted mine and my bandwidth usage went down from 80gb to 50.

While that solution is very effective, it only works on the ".com" protocol. This won't have as profound an effect on most Canadians, though any little bit helps.

Another way to save bandwidth is to disconnect your monitor when not in use. This will prevent the internet weather and time daemons from updating (what's the point of updating if you can't see it, right?).

.

Our cap is 50Gb per month I think.

I blew it during last year's Steam sale. Yay, you mean I got Thief: Deadly Shadows for $5? Nope, It was $15 because I had to pay an extra $2/Gb for each gig it downloaded.

Just got into iTunes movie watching, but at 5Gb per movie, I may as well go to the theatre or rent the damn Blu-ray from Blockbuster.

I would think most people would oppose having the government be able to monitor their internet use so easily.

Your math is right but are you sure about kB vs kb? I'd have a hard time believing wow uses 15 kB/s while if it's kb/s it works out to more like 130 MB/day.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the US government already has the capability to do so. All they have to do is request the ISP to do so through a court order.

Lucky for me, both of my major high speed Internet options in the Twin Cities area are Comcast and Qwest, and both have 250 GB caps. I remember people complaining when Comcast announced their 250 GB cap but it really does seem reasonable to me. I was hoping that would set the bar for other companies looking to institute caps but I guess not.

I doubt I use even close to 250 GB a month, but I still do use Netflix and buy games on Steam. I'm sure my bandwidth usage varies a lot - some months I don't buy any games and I rarely watch Netflix, other months I'll buy 2-3 games and watch a lot. So my Internet usage could be anywhere from ~10 GB to ~100 GB.

I really hope Comcast and Qwest keep their 250 GB monthly caps and don't reduce them. Right now I have Qwest; if they lower theirs I will switch to Comcast immediately.

c/p from another forum:

Looks like Bell Canada has all the rates up:

Upload speed: up to 1 Mbps
Internet usage: 25 GB of bandwidth per month

Fiber 6: $31.95
Download speed: up to 6 Mbps
Upload speed: up to 1 Mbps
Internet usage: 25 GB of bandwidth per month

Fiber 12: $36.95

Internet usage: 50 GB of bandwidth per month

Fiber 16: $46.95

This is the most retarded thing i've ever seen, i'm on optimum online and for 29.95, i get 15 Mb/s with no cap and this is in Connecticut where nobody lives here.

Probably true. But there's a big difference between having to get a court order so you can force an ISP to monitor or report, and being the ISP which could eliminate the pesky need for court approval.

just for the lulz, i checked newzxxx for the largest pr0n d/l.

Brazzers Ultimate 1080p HD Pack 6 - 364,250.1MB

my problem is if they want to charge like elecricity whcih is one of the major points always brought up, then charge like electricity.

Everyone gets the same "high" speed. And if user 1 uses next to no bandwidth, then they get charged next to nothing. Flat rate charge per GB.

It is BS, they want to charge the people who use nothing full price, but don't want to give people who use it more that same price.

Interesting and scary situation. Is there a way to tell what my presnet use is?
I too am on cablevision with no cap. At this time.
BUT you know when one goes............... So goes others. If this goes through in Cananda with little or no fallout for the company; greedy bloodsuckers here in the states will follow suit.

And, any utility/tool you tell me to track use, does it capture Xbox use as well? I am downloading crazy trailers demos etc off Xbox and was just thinking about signing up for netflix.

Sad days are coming.

That sucks. I don't have a cap. I live in the city so I have other options if they ever decided to use a cap. I probably use under 10gb a month but its just a matter of principal to me.

Btw America rules. Land of the free baby!!!!!!
