I am surprised these are using the 6 watt chips. Are we going to get 10 watt Braswell chips this time around?

Something tells me that no.... kinda impressed by the timming, i was expecting to take longer.

I originally though those 6W chips would replace Bay Trail-M. I hope they launch higher clocked (8-10W TDP) ~2.7GHz 4C/4T + 16 EUs Gen 8 @ 800-1000MHz Braswell later on.

Fortunately both Cherry Trail-T and Braswell are coming a bit earlier than the latest pre-launch predictions suggested (late Q2 and Q3). Perhaps Broxton will also arrive earlier than expected next year.
 
They said they wanted to merge mobile and desktop intro Braswell, well, there is, it was a short for "removing desktop parts".

How have they done this 2.8X die shrink, while simultaneously adding 12 EUs it's about the CPU only? The die must be tiny (~50mm²), and it doesn't have much or any contra-revenue, so I wonder why they didn't launch it earlier. Now it must have 24EUs and >3GHz to compete on performance (power is no question with the efficient architecture and superior node).
 
That X7 die is ludicrously tiny, must be closer to 40mm^2 than 50... the comparison with atom on 22nm is impressive too, almost three times smaller is stellar for a single node shrink.
A single Airmont core should be ~1mm^2 now, how does it compare to A57 or A53?

If Braswell-D doesn't appear, I wonder if we will see more tablet SKUs being used for desktop applications?

Major problem would be losing the SATA ports, but with some fast eMMC 5.0 it should be fine for basic usage.

x7-8700 has the same CPU clocks as the N3700 and the x5-8500 has cpu clocks in the same ballpark as the N3150 (base clock is lower, but turbo is higher). Main question I have would be the turbo duration. Will the Braswell chips hold turbo longer than the tablet chips?

does someone have a diagram of baytrail vs cherrytrail. I wonder if they are stuffing more ip blocks onto the SOC given density gains or are just shrinking chips.
 
on BT the diference was that "Z" could not use both cpu and igp turbos at the same time, but had no problem to maintain CPU only turbos, N where able to maintain both turbos for a while, depending on cooling, Desktop ones had no problem at all.

The N can already maintain turbos if there is enoght cooling.

Intel did say last month they were trying to make up for the loss in sales volume with higher prices. If no Cherry Trail D models will ever be released then it seems they are doing it at all price levels.

Interesting. I think we are going to find Braswell inside ASUS T100's successor and other low-cost 2-in-1s instead of Cherry Trail. Here's my bet:

Pentium N3150 (2.06GHz, 12 EUs iGPU) + 4GB RAM + 64GB for $299
Pentium N3700 (2.4GHZ, 16 EUs iGPU) + 4GB RAM + 64/128GB + 1080p IPS Screen for $399

There’s an HDMI port, USB 3.0 (Braswell does not support USB 3.1) and an SD card slot. The ‘lid’ weighs about 750 grams. The operating system could be Windows, Android or even Chrome OS. Battery life is said to be up to 11.5% better than systems built on previous generation (Baytrail M) processors.

We’ve previously seen most low-cost 2-in-1s being built on Baytrail-T (now X5 / X7) but it looks like Intel think that the Braswell platform can offer enough for the low-cost market. Lighter solutions with the longest battery life are possible with Atom X5 and X7 but at the end of day it’s the OEMs decision.
