The fact that Bay Trail even with its relatively poor graphics can hold up in these titles decently has me excited for what Cherry Trail will bring.

Indeed- The wife has already expressed interest in taking the current tablet as soon as the next gen comes out and I upgrade. Assuming even a solid 20-30% improvement that would bring a lot more games into the playable range.

Honestly though, if the Shield tablet didn't have reports of wifi issues and I could get a good streaming setup equivelant to steam streaming with my AMD desktop card to the shield I would probably return this one and use a shield until cherry trail comes out and I see reviews.

Either way, exciting times in the tablet world.

I beg to differ, puma+ is very competitive but it would be better if I dont start this up again.

By competitive I mean on pricing. Presumably they are hobbled by the same platform costs issues that Intel has; except Intel is doing the contra-revenue which AMD obviously can't do.

Does anyone know how the dual-core Celerons perform for witching HD video and for general web browsing?

HD video is pretty much a function of the GPU. H.264 should work just fine. Web Browsing would be more than fine on it.

7-inch Asus tablet with quad-core Intel Moorefield processor visits the FCC

images

Earlier this year, Intel announced its 64-bit Moorefield processors, optimized for mobile devices running the Android operating system. Today, we came across a tablet powered by one of these new chips – a 7-inch slate made by Asus. The device, listed only under the K007 model name, just appeared in the FCC's database, along with a handful of hardware specs.

Yup, hardware specs. These are rarely listed in FCC papers we usually deal with, but in this particular case, a list of component model numbers is part of the filing. First and foremost, the chip in use is the Atom Z3560, with a quad-core processor running at up to 1.8GHz. That should be sufficient in terms of processing power for an Android 7-incher. As for the screen itself, it is of the IPS LCD variety and has a resolution of 1200 by 1920 pixels. Also, there's a couple of snappers on the device – a 5MP camera on the back and a more humble camera on the front for video chats. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS are supported, as indicated by the documents. Storage space should be either 16 or 32 gigabytes.

On a related note, Asus announced a trio of Intel-powered Android tablets in June. Neither of them, however, matches the specs of the tablet provided above, so the Asus K007 tablet is most likely a different device.

Any guesses what this new Asus tablet could be? A new MeMO Pad tablet, a successor to the Nexus 7 (2013), or something else?

How about a Moorefield-powered 2014 Nexus 7? Seems like a good fit for a $200-250 64-bit capable Nexus device. Bay Trail-like CPU performance + better graphics performance than Apple A7 & Snapdragon 801 (thanks to PowerVR G6430 @ 533MHz). I hope there will be a new Nexus 7, alongside the rumoured (more expensive) Nexus 8.

would be an amazing win for intel. having google effectively bless the company with its own devices. still though, after using surface pro 3 id be really interested in seeing a nexus-llama mountain 10 inch premium android tablet. at 499 would be absurd.

piednoel has been hinting that the gpu benchmarks they show at idf in september should handily slap around k1. we will see.

While Moorefield would be a strong candidate for a tablet like a new Nexus 7, the GPU is only slightly faster than Apple's A7 SoC, and not at all comparable to something like TK1.

I'm not sure which Tweet you're referring to, but the one I found was comparing Surface Pro 3's GPU (20 Gen7 EUs) to TK1.

hahaha he took it down. it was a reply to someone tweeting an icestorm score he was getting with this k1 tablet. piednoel said something like "see you at #idf2014 ;) "

edit - sorry i found it

HTC's Nexus 8 looks more like a high-end device with its (rumoured) 8.9'' 2560x1600 screen, 4GB RAM and Denver Tegra K1. I really doubt it will cost less than $300, so Google/ASUS could still launch a cheaper yet still capable 64-bit Nexus 7 (I hope they do).

I bet he was talking about Broadwell-Y. Anyway, Tegra K1 should run GFXBench T-Rex @ 2560x1600 at ~50 FPS (rumoured Nexus 8 resolution). Moorefield (based on A7 & Merrifield results) should score over 30 FPS @ 1080p and close to 45 FPS @ 720p so it's a solid performer at more conventional resolutions. Huge boost over Nexus 7 2013's 2 year old S4 Pro, especially on the GPU side.

Intel does have the advantage of their upcoming 14nm process compared to the TK1 at 28nm. Not really a fair comparison, don't get me wrong I hope Intel steps up their game by a lot, but if the TK1 was using 16FF+, they'd be leading (with 50% better performance added from 28nm) in GPU and CPU at the power dissipation level.

QNAP Launches x53 Pro Bay Trail NAS for SMBs

qnap_x53_pro_carousel_678x452.png

The launch of the QNAP TS-x51 series was covered in great detail. QNAP took the lead over other NAS manufacturers in opting for the 22 nm Atom SoCs. While we were expecting the first Silvermont-based NAS units to use either Avoton or Rangeley, QNAP surprised us by opting for Bay Trail-D with the Celeron J1800. The advantage was that the Celeron J1800 included the Quick Sync engine, which enabled some nifty multimedia features targeting home consumers.

Fast forward a few weeks, and we have QNAP's play targeting business users using the same platform. The difference in the hardware relates to the choice of the Bay Trail-D part. Instead of the Celeron J1800 (which was a 2C/2T part), we have the Celeron J1900 (a 4C/4T part). While the 2-bay version comes with 2x GbE ports, the others come with 4x GbE ports. All the innovative features from the TS-x51 series (hardware transcoding and Virtualization Station, mainly) are present in the x53-Pro series too. Due to the availability of more resources, it is possible to run two VMs concurrently in the x53 Pro (compared to one in the x51). Since we have already touched upon the two main features in our x51 launch piece, we will not discuss them in detail here. [...]

hp-chromebook-11-g3.jpg

It looks like HP is getting ready to update its 11 inch Chromebook… again. This time instead of just giving the laptop a lousier display and a new case design, the company is swapping out the ARM-based processor for an Intel chip.

Two new 11.6-inch Acer Aspire Switch tablets surface online

As_SW5-111_wp_win81_03-686x380.jpg

We have just been tipped that Acer is planning to release two new tablets in the Acer Aspire Switch family, both of them featuring 11.6-inch displays. First we have received some shipping logs that referenced two unknown Acer tablets bearing the model numbers SW5-111 and SW-171, then we’ve noticed that the two code names are also referenced by a couple of official Acer pages.

According to our info, the two new tablets will basically be larger and faster versions of the Acer Aspire Switch 10. First there’s the SW5-111, a tablet that is believed to come Intel Bay Trail processor options, and then there’s the SW-171, a model that’s expected to feature Intel Core i processors. If this info turns out to be accurate, we could think of the Acer Aspire Switch SW5-111 as a larger version of the 10-inch Aspire Switch, while the SW5-171 version may be a spiritual successor to the Acer Iconia W7 – a tablet also based on Intel Core i processors – and at the same time a competitor to Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 (review).

The shipping listing that you can see attached below shows that there will be two versions of each model, depending on the Windows version that comes pre-installed. The SW5-111P and the SW5-171P will allegedly ship with Windows 8.1 Pro, while the SW5-111 and the SW-171 will ship with the standard edition of Windows 8.1. [...]

Toshiba Encore 2

Only 800p and 32gb, but not bad for 269.00. Really though, how much would it cost to just make a 64gb SSD standard in all these devices? Does have the newer Z3735 1.8ghz processor though.
