Windows 8.1 with Bing Tablet Avalanche Expected in Q3 2014

Yesterday we saw Toshiba unveil the first two tablets to arrive with Windows 8.1 with Bing, the Encore 2 8-inch and 10-inch.

But as you might have already guessed, we’re going to see a lot of models running the same OS in the upcoming months, as Microsoft has dropped licensing charges for Windows for product makers manufacturing devices with a form factor below 9-inches.

A recent report relayed to us by the infamous DigiTimes publication, claims Lenovo, Acer and ASUS are all gearing up to roll out Windows 8.1 with Bing tablets in the third quarter of the year.

as for this not being in the contra-revenue I would like to read more on that, do you remember where you saw that -m variants aren't included.

They don't have to, the reason being is they pointed out Bay Trail being originally designed for "PC"(Like Netbooks) is why the BOM was too high for the race-to-the-bottom Tablet market. Hence, the contra-revenue.

Way to miss my followup or my intentions for posting that. I was poking fun at the tone of his post. There are many reasons other than performance for the chip to be replaced in this particular 2 in 1.

According to this article, Intel plans to ship 7.5M tablet chips in Q2, 50% more than the 5M in June and according to Intel's CEO on track to reach its 40M goal.

They'll need to sell 27.5M chips in H2, more than 2x as much as H1. They'll have to continue selling 50% more chips each quarter (5 + 7.5 + 11.25 + 16.9 = 40.6M). If they want to reach their internal goal, they must sell 100% more (5 + 7.5 + 15 + 30 = 58M).

I dont think benchmark tests tell the whole story when it comes to new computer technologies. I could imagine a desktop tablet like device that could be packaged as standard desktop All-In-One device.

The Asus Transformer Pad line of products are Android tablets that become Android notebooks when you attach an optional keyboard dock. Up until recently most tablets in the Transformer Pad family have sported ARM-based chips. Now Asus is introducing its first Intel-powered models.

Zotac goes fanless with Zbox C-series mini-PCs

Small PCs usually rely on equally small, noisy fans, but Zotac is kicking off Computex 2014 by eliminating active cooling entirely from its latest Zbox C-series nano barebones systems. With amply ventilated cases and large internal heatsinks taking the place of fans, these PCs are geared for silent running.

In order to excise fans from these systems, Zotac is relying on a range of low-voltage mobile CPUs from Intel and AMD, all with TDPs under 12W. Here's the lineup:

The A6-1450 is part of AMD's Temash low-power APU line. The Celeron N2930 is one of Intel's Bay Trail SoCs, while the i3-4020Y and i5-4210Y are both Haswell CPUs. Any of these chips should be fine for productivity and light media tasks, but with only low-power integrated graphics onboard, you won't be pushing any demanding games to their limits.

Computex 2014: New Transformer Book V from ASUS

One of the interesting dynamics in the mobile device industry is the integration of several form-factors in the same device. ASUS has been a major proponent in this, with their FonePad, PadFone and Transformer Book. Coupled on top of this is the use of Windows and Android in various forms across the systems, so naturally there should be one device to cover all usage models, right? This is the Transformer Book V, a five-mode capable, three-in-one converged laptop, smartphone and tablet.

A small button on the tablet helps switch between Android and Windows.

Asus FonePad 8 is an 8 inch tablet… that makes phone calls

Asus is embiggening its Fonepad line of Android tablets with voice calling capabilities. Just in case the original-sized 7 inch Fonepad wasn’t big enough for you, there’s now an Asus FonePad 8 (FE380CG) with an 8 inch screen.

The new Fonepad 8 has a 1280 x 800 pixel IPS display and a 1.8 GHz Intel Atom Z3560 quad-core Moorefield processor. The device has stereo front-facing speakers, dual SIM support, and the ability to act like an enormous phone as well as a tablet. It supports 3G networks, but lacks 4G LTE support.

Mobile Geeks reports the phone/tablet/whatever you want to call it will have 1GB of RAM, 8GB or 16GB of storage, and Android 4.4 KitKat software with the Asus ZenUI user interface. It has a 5MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing camera.

Asus unveils new MeMO Pad 7 and 8 inch budget tablets

The 7 inch Asus MeMO Pad ME176C tablet has an Intel Atom Z3745 quad-core, 64-bit Bay Trail processor and a 1280 x 800 pixel IPS display with 170 degree viewing angles.

It has a 5MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing camera, support for Miracast wireless display, WiFi, and Bluetooth.

The tablet has 1GB of RAM and 8GB to 16GB of storage, which seems about par for the course with entry-level Android tablets these days. It measures about 0.38 inches thick and weighs 10.4 ounces.

Step up to the 8 inch MeMO Pad 8 ME581CL model and you get a full HD IPS display… although curiously you get an Intel Atom Z3580 Moorefield chip which instead of a Bay Trail processor. Moorefield chips are also 64-bit Atom processors and this is a quad-core processor.

Dell updates its Android Venue 7 & Venue 8 with Intel Merrifield chips

Dell has gone with the latest Intel Atom Z3460 Merrifield dual-core 1.6GHz CPU for the Venue 7 and the faster Atom Z3480 Merrifield dual-core CPU clocked at 2.1GHz for the Venue 8. Both tablets have 1GB of RAM and have Intel HD Graphics (Imagination PowerVR G6400 ) for HD gaming.

The Venue 7 sports a 7-inch display with HD (1280X800) resolution, which seems passable, while the 8-inch Venue 8 ups the ante with a full HD display in 16:10 aspect ratio (1920×1200 pixel resolution). Both run Android 4.4 KitKat.

I really believe Broadwell-Y will eat bay trail eventually. I don't understand why atom is really being pursued as an architecture when it's obviously tangential to Broadwell and assuming they improve power usage and tdp to 1-7W you have the option to put Broadwell in tablet formats where even at low clock speeds it will demolish atom.

The Asus Book V looks interesting with its Moorefield phone + Broadwell tablet CPUs. I'm looking forward to see how Silvermont does in its first phone and the other Android products. It also seems that Intel17 was right when he speculated that Merrifield might be DOA; it's already replaced by Moorefield.

Traditional notebook and PC sales have been stagnant the past few years, while mobile devices like tablets and smartphones continue to sell in ever-larger numbers. So it’s no surprise Intel’s been working hard to get its chips into mobile devices. And it looks like the company’s succeeding.

Intel chips dominate the Windows tablet space, but a growing number of Android tablets (and even some phones) feature Intel chips. We’ve seen a few new models from Dell and Asus during this week’s Computex trade show… but Intel says that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Tablets aren’t the only goodies Dell has in store at Computex this year. The company is rolling out new Dell Inspiron 2-in-1 notebooks and an Inspiron AIO, too. The Dell Inspiron 11 3000 Series 2-in-1 features quad-core Intel Pentium (N3530) or Celeron (N2830) processors and 500GB of storage (plus 20GB of Dropbox storage) with battery life over 8 hours. It has Waves MAXXAudio technology on board, and the 360-degree hinge offers a variety of positions. The device offers a 10-point multitouch display and facial recognition software for more secure online password use. But for $150 MSRP it is really hard to find fault with anything in the configuration of this tablet. You get a 7-inch screen with a 1280x800 IPS panel. And while the Nexus 7 is definitely ahead with its 1920x1200 resolution in the same form factor, the MeMO Pad 7 seems more than adequate for web browsing and watching videos. The Intel Atom Z3745 based on the Bay Trail platform is also doing work and is able to output some impressive user experience and benchmark results. For $150 you are buying a machine that can handle pretty much any Android application you can throw at it with the ability to pursue the higher end of the Android gaming market, too.

There are some fears that with the x86 application infrastructure behind that of ARM, there will be application compatibility and slow down issues with binary translation, but I haven't seen any yet. If it pops up during my extended use though, you can be sure you'll find out about it.

Moorefield, the 2.33GHz Z3580, is about 25% faster than S801 in AndEBench native and 2.5x faster in the java version. I guess it also consumes considerably lower power as well.

what phones will use this SOC in 2014? S801 is available in the stores since months and is based on a two year old architecture.
But I haven't heard about any Merrifield phone yet.
And remember that a phone SOC is much more than the CPU.
But it will be interesting to read Anandtechs review and benchmarks when someone makes a phone with it.

I dunno, but what I do know is that Intel just killed Qualcomm's Android CPU dominance; Snapdragon isn't the fastest processor anymore. My expectations for design wins (Samsung, Apple, Sony, HTC,...) are low though.

you cannot know this until a Merrifield phone is benchmarked and compared with the best Snapdragon phone available at the time (S805 probably).

And you seem to forget GPU and image DSP. Merrifield has a weak image DSP. This is a major issue for design wins.
And GPU seems to be slightly weaker than S805.

And I haven't seen any independent CPU benchmarks either.

The facts known so far indicates that Merrifield will not be a success (I'm talking about sales volume, not CPU performance).
Soon the rumours about the Q3/Q4 phones will arrive, if no major Merrifield design wins, then it is a failure.

There's also Moorefield. And Moorefield is substantially faster than S801. The 5% clock speed increase of S805 isn't going to change anything. This is a big victory for Intel, even if won't get the number of design wins it ought to have -- and it won't.

Haven't been following bay trail stuff for a little bit and all these tablets appear, it appears that the OEMs are using bay-trail T, meerifield and moorefield into their tablets without appreciably different price ranges, my noob question is, Why would anyone use bay-trail T or merrifield when moorefield exists? Maybe for Windows I can understand, but for android, wouldn't moorefield be just the unilaterally better choice, due to the better gpu and higher (max) clock speeds, as well as better design for smaller form factors?

There's mini HDMI.

There’s also a microSd card slot for removable storage, a mini HDMI port for external displays, and a micro USB port. The tablet has stereo speakers and an 18.5Whr battery. It weighs about 12.5 ounces.
