Looks like all of the gloom and doom predictions about Bay Trail were wrong. It's selling like CRAZY. The Dell Venue pro and T100 are selling out pretty much instantaneously with every Black Friday sale. They're moving TONS of these things, it's pretty ridiculous - i've been keeping an eye on slick deals and both of those are selling out pretty much within minutes of being posted.

I wonder though if they are taking sales away from android or just from higher end tablets and ultra books. Regardless they had to try to penetrate cheaper markets. Have to wonder what the effect will be on margins though. I would like to pick up one of these eventually, but since I have a tablet and just got a new desktop for myself and a laptop for my wife, can't really justify it now. I would definitely never buy another android tablet considering all the other choices available however.

There isn't much of an overlap - ultrabook sales will lower a slight bit, but BT is mainly for consumers who are completely oblivious to computers in general and only want basic media consumption. For those folks, Bay Trail works great as a low end device with some windows familiarity. Ultrabooks with core processors are for a different demographic. Bay Trail works great as a media consumption device without crazy multi tasking, core processors work for those who want to multitask everything and anything.

Therefore, it's multiple products for multiple uses. It's like having the GTX 650 for the low end guys and a GTX 780 for those who demand power. Those who demand power won't get a Bay Trail. Those who demand power, will get an ultrabook, macbook pro, or something like the Lenovo Yoga Pro 2. There isn't an overlap here, essentially intel is offering something for low end and entry level which it has never done before, and intel HAD to do this.. It's basically having multiple processors at multiple price points. But, intel NEEDED to do this - they could not ignore the proliferation of Android tablets everywhere. It does seem that intel is being successful at selling products for that segment of market, which is great.

Fact of the matter is, Bay Trail is competitive with every android ARM SOC on the market in terms of performance, while the GPU isn't quite as good as the snapdragon 800 it is a very competent chip. And it's selling like crazy. I say, good on intel.

Ultrabooks are laptops first and an attempt to emulate the Macbook Air, but with different designs, manufacturers, and running Windows(with an Intel CPU, of course) . 8" tablets like the Venue 8 Pro are NOT going be the best to use in a typical laptop fashion. The 10" ones basically are the successors to the netbooks in laptop mode and competing with other 10" tablets in tablet mode.

Considering Cherry Trail-T has 4x more EUs and a new graphics architecture I think they'll have the best of both worlds next year, great CPU+GPU performance for tablets. 🙂
 
For the record, Atoms supported 64bit for a while now.

good for consumers maybe not so much for competition...how does this looks from a legal/anti-trust pov against smaller semiconductor businesses?
and for those that say that intel doesnt bribe OEMs/SIs, this tells that it just might be the case.
 
It's not bribery, rebates and subsidies are legal unless they include exclusionary practices.

My point is that they can work against penniless AMD, but I don't see Qualcomm and the rest just giving up on 20-30% market share over a $billion bucks. What if they just do the same, I mean Qualcomm and Apple particularly have so much money they can easily match anything Intel offers and then some.

I ve already pointed that theses chips are sold at a loss,
1bn subside for 40 millions chips is 25$ subside per chip,
according to numbers from the competition the net loss
per chip is between 15 and 25$ for selling prices in the
10-20$ range.

They sell so much that they have to sell them at 50%
of their cost, this say that intel has large unemployed
production capacity...

Well clearly going by Abwx's numbers, Bay Trail is going to be losing Intel a lot of money in the near future. Taking losses for market share gain is nothing unusual in itself, but the real problem is that if Intel needs to shift 60 million tablet chips in 2014 - up from 6 million this year - which one of the big players is losing out?

So it comes down to who has the stomach - or cash - to take the losses longest?

Don't get me wrong, this is great news for consumers. I really do hope this gets extremely cut-throat as it's about time all the big players were really being made to sweat over our cash. I just don't envisage Qualcomm or Samsung (and to a lesser degree Apple) simply gifting that 20% increased market share to Intel next year, which makes me wonder just how low they are all prepared to go.
 
That's the biggest load of speculative garbage i've ever seen here. You don't have a clue about intel's financials, so don't pretend that you do unless you have facts to back it up (IE, WHAT THE CHIP COSTS INTEL TO PRODUCE (FACTS) ). Intel has a product that is selling in high volumes so even if the margins are super slim, they are making money. All ARM SOC chips are generally slim margin but when you sell 10+ million, it still makes money.

Come back to us when you have facts and figures. Not the speculative nonsense/FUD that is par for the course. "ABWX's numbers". 🙄
 
Current projections are around 100m Android tablets worlwide in 2014. After you take away cheap Chinese tablets selling for $50 at Wal-Mart (and well uh, in China) and more brand popular tablets that weren't made in 2014 to begin with (the 2013 Nexus 7 especially) I have a hard time imagining there will even be 60 million tablets left over. To call that an extremely ambitious goal would be putting things very lightly, unless IDC's predictions are way off.

Would be interested to see some real sales figures for the current BayTrail and CT+ offerings that are sold out everywhere. I'm sure the sales are perfectly healthy, but sold out everywhere by itself doesn't mean anything if they weren't offering that many of them to begin with. Samsung's Exynos 5250 based Chromebook was sold out like crazy too (and topped Amazon) but I somehow doubt there are especially ubiquitous in the wild. And people weren't going crazy over how successful it must be. Based on how quiet the Ubuntu hacking scene was on it for the first several months after I got it it sure never felt like this huge hit.

It's hilarious that you think they are selling them below cost. Please at least try to have facts when making baseless speculation. Even semiaccurate has more facts than you.

Intel indicated an estimated 1.5 point margin hit during the investor day regarding the discounts they are offering next year. Which still brings their margins just shy of record levels.
 
We've had enough of this rubbish for the moment; you guys get even more disagreeable than usual when financials and conspiracies are thrown into the mix. If you want to talk about Intel's balance sheets, take it to a stock trading forum. In the interim, let's try to stick to a tech discussion in a tech forum.

Yes, the Cherry Trail iGPU is big.

However, earlier in the thread it was mentioned even Bay Trail is CPU bottlenecked in Team Fortress 2:

So I am very skeptical on the usefulness of these Extra EUs for gaming. (Maybe there are some upcoming games that scale to quad core cpu, but don't need much single thread performance?)
