When Ben Franklin invented the Lightning Rod some people said when a building burned down due to lightning it was an act of God. It is strange that people would rather see a building burn down than save it.

Thomas Edison was another genius. It took him around 1000 attempts to get a lightbulb that worked. I cant imagine the world without a light bulb.

My personal Hero is Brigham Young. He is the most famous settler ever known to promote the settling of the north west. Even when his own government stood against him, he organized Mormons to resist the oppression of the federal government. When Troops were sent to quell a supposed insurrection by Mormons, he organized Peaceful resistence and got all the people to render no aid to the federal troops along the way. When the federal troops arrived at Salt Lake City he had already organized the complete evacuation of the City, and if the troops had made trouble, he had planned to burn down the entire city, before he let it be occupied by federal forces. All this he did without firing a single shot. He was able to convince the federal forces to camp outside of town and even though they tried to get the people to bow to federal pressure only limited success was achieved by the Federal Government. Brigham Young was a champion of States Rights, and the most dynamic leader that ever lived. The best thing that can be said of him is the people loved him enough to follow him, and he led them to safety and security. He served as both the leader of a church and as the Governor of territory of Utah.

Glad to see Glenn Gould made the list. Can't think of any other impressive Canadians.
Her birth name was Eilleen Regina Edwards, she's from Timmins...a 40,000 person town 360miles from a major city. Notorious for being in the middle of absolutely nowhere :p

What tragic times we live in when Billy Graham inhabits the same list as a great like Malcolm X. It is a shame. How much farther can we fall... who knows.

How much farther? There's at least one guy on the list who did nothing but play football to get there. At least Graham is a cunning businessman;).

Yes they have US citizenships. They need to be down there for work, and once they realize how similar our two countries are, they usually just stay. With our climate, i'd move to the states in a heartbeat :)

Even though he was a confederate, I'd say Robert E Lee should be up there. Some of his early work along the missisipi in the army corps of engineers still stands today, he was a hero in the mexican war, as well as a very popular commander of west point. Others military wise: Bradley, MacArthur, Nimitz, Ermey (heh, j/k on the last one)

Political:
Washington,Lincoln,FDR,Wilson,JFK,Reagan. Those are just prez's though, I could probably think of a lot of good cabinet members or speakers of the house that could be up there too, Polk comes to mind.

Business/Science:
Edison, Wright Brothers, Henry Ford, maybe Rockafeller and Gates.

Another category, maybe call it "Pioneer" or something like that:
Glenn, Armstrong, Louis and Clark, Yeager

I am so sick and tired of the glorification of this rebel scum. So the guy loved his state of Virginia-- he fought for slavery. Maybe he should have rethought it. Confederate soldiers shouldn't be buried in Arlington. Their memorial should be razed. And of course the guys who like this guy tend to be the more patriotic-than-thou types. Please.

I nominate Che Guevera for the greatest 'American' ever.

"Whenever death may surprise us, let it be welcome if our battle cry has reached even one receptive ear and another hand reaches out to take up our arms."

"dying words:
"I don't care if i fall as long as someone else picks up my gun and keeps on shooting."

"In fact, if Christ himself stood in my way, I, like Nietzsche, would not hesitate to squish him like a worm"

You must be joking. The guy was a loser who was betrayed by his own. In the end, he was nothing but a dictator's salesman, killed so his dead voice could be risen to martyrdom. He was to Castro as Tolstoy was to Lenin, i.e. a strawman of moral legitimacy for a murderous dictator.

Uhh.. yea. So explain why every peasant in Latin America loves him and people all the way in Asia idolize him? Explain why some of the greatest minds of our time idolize him.

"Che Guevara is an inspiration for ever human being who loves freedom" - Nelson Mandela

"Che was the most complete human being of our age" - Jean-Paul Sartre

"Che is fairly intellectual for a Latino" - Declassified CIA document

Read the link in my sig and watch the movie The Motorcycle Diaries.

I hardly see how concensus provides for moral justification.

Apply that to Nov. 2004. :p
When forced to choose between the lesser of 2 evils, I feel it is wise to choose the less competent... meaning I voted for Kerry.

Being an Ayn Rand fan I know you harbor a certain degree of hatred for mankind. But please read the quotes relating to Che. Some of the brightest and bravest minds of the 20th century see him as greater than them.

Once again, you must be joking. To appreciate Rand's philosophy is to have the deepest love for humankind, as it requires the acknowledgment that humankind is comprised of intelligent, creative, feeling individuals, and not just a mindless blob. I would not harm nor forcibly take from another person even if my own life depended on it. My respect for the freedom and the dignity of the individual is far too great, as is my own self-respect and moral integrity. Compare that to Che, who would swim in a pool of human blood of his own making if he thought it served his own personal cause (conveniently and arbitrarily labeled as the "common good"). How confused must you be if you see freedom and respect as hatred and violence and thievery as love?

That explains a lot about your "logic".
