This list is laughable. Tom Cruise? Pat Tillman? Madonna? Sorry, no. I think Ulysses S. Grant was just a bit more important than Madonna.

Yup, and the poem takes away from the contributions of the other riders. Leave it up to raildogg to have a superficial knowledge of American history.

Far too many entertainers on that list. For example, I'm sure Tom Hanks is a swell guy-but one of the top 100 great Americans?

I'd like to see something like a Profiles in Courage type-series, but this sounds like a pale copy of A&E's Biography.

And putting Richard Nixon on the list (as well as GWB)-that had to be done purely to generate controversy (and viewers). Might as well include Charles Manson.

I'll pass on this show-it sounds too hokey.

Then you dont know much about Nixon. He was an amazing diplomat. If it werent for him trying to coverup watergate, he would have been on the short list of greatest presidents.

I was of draft age during the Nixon administration. Believe me, I am very well aware of what that SOB did to this country. He was a scondrel, pure and simple. Putting him on the list of 100 greatest Americans makes as much sense as putting Jane Fonda on that list.

My list:

All US Service members who gave their lives or were wounded and or served honorably for this great nation in Time of War. Not one person should be considered " the greatest " American over these.

If Bush's Middle East foreign policy leads to true peace in the Middle East for the first time in 2000 years, he should go down as the greatest...

But since that's a fat chance, here are some of my faves:

(In alphabetical order)

Armstrong, Neil
Eisenhower, Dwight (Supreme Allied Commander in the Europe)
Jefferson, Thomas
King Jr., Dr. Martin Luther
Patton, George
Reagan, Ronald
Washington, George
Yeager, Chuck (personal fave)

RANT: WTF are people like Michael Moore, Tom Cruise, etc. doing on that list instead of someone like General Douglas MacArthur?

Most people will say "Who?" at the mention of his name.

He is probably the most underappreciated figure in American history.

Not really, as good as it may sound. For example, Thomas Jefferson served his country more with his brains than he could have by being another statistic in some war.

Not to disrespect those who have died for this country, but some people do a greater service by not fighting in wars but by using their other talents. Personally I feel that by going to college and eventually graduate school I will be doing more good to my country than I would had I became a grunt in the Army.

Exactly. And the Army is only good as a whole. Each one of those single people that make up the army didn't actually contribute as much value to this country as one great visionary.

Personally, I think Earl Warren should be considered. I think the upholding of civil rights would not have been possible without the strong backing of the Supreme Court.

What are we, the Borg? I definately appreciate your salute to our servicemen, but I don't see the problem with identifying individuals and getting specific. Besides, I love lists ;)

Actually if we were to define greatness a certain way I might go your route. But I look at it as the person who had the biggest, most profound impact on society.

I suppose if we were to cheat and create an "individual" called 'the American Soldier' then I just might have to put that up top at #1.

EDIT- Coomar: I'm a little skeptical of putting Einstein on the list myself.

My top several:
Benjamin Franklin
Thomas Jefferson
President Eisenhower
Abraham Lincoln
Mark Twain

And the winner, IMSNHO:
Nikola Tesla, the man who gave us AC, the AND gate, most of our wireless tech, and conspiracy theories of untold number.

And why the Hell is Rush Limbaugh on the list, but Edgar Alan Poe nowhere to be seen?!
It's like a VH1 or Rolling Stones top album/artist list, for Satan's sake!
