Well, after seeing the screenshots for myself, i can no longer tell people they do not have anything to fear just because they are making it an MMO. I expected decreased graphical quality, but an entirely new art style bothers me...I have heard some good things though--i just hope they do not try for the ol' WoW clone.

If no company bucks the trend of the WoW clone game model, i imagine it will be stuck that way until Blizzard releases project titan.

Game looks pretty generic so far. Guess it's easier to create a bunch of time consuming content that lacks depth instead of creating a rich environment. Pretty much the same story behind social media, give the user a framework and let them create all their own content for you.

Seems to me people are being too harsh on the MMO. It's an MMO and the comments seem to be mostly critical of MMO's.

Now the concern about it destroying single player is worth looking at - they are different and it's reasonable to want more single player.

Did WoW destroy Warcraft non-MMO? Warcraft 3 was very different than Warcraft 2 - and both are 'outdated' now needing big changes for a new game.

So I don't think there'd be a very similar game without WoW - but ya, there hasn't been any new game.

true.

Warcraft 3 did destroy Warcract.

I enjoyed Warcraft3...but also disliked it in terms of the franchise.

I dont know the inner workings of Bioware/Lucas Arts/EA, but I assume Kotor 3 was cancelled/never developed because they did not want to take away resources and interest from TOR. A great loss IMO. The quality of the single player games Bioware has put out has declined greatly as well. Can never prove it is related to diverting resources to TOR but in my own mind I feel that is what happened.

I feel the same. More and more developers are focusing all of their time and effort on making MMO style games. Either they are enticed by the cost structure, or figure that they have an endless gold mine for micro-transactions.

And while I can't confirm that MMOs are directly responsible, I would point to the trend of single player games coming out declining and the MMOs increasing, and mainly by companies that traditionally produced single player games.

I would point out diablo 3 as a prime example. It has a single player mode, but it is always online because Blizzard is planning on milking the micro-transactions and the profits from the RMAH. It is 100% to the benefit of Blizzard and zero percent to the benefit of the single player gamer.

We don't have a smoking gun, but we do have reasonable suspicion.

It looks pretty much like every other MMO that's come out in the last 10 years, but with worse combat.

Why, oh why, did they have to do the whole race/class cliche? It's so overplayed.

Also, it looks to have about as much character customization as DA2. And it looks to be extremely heavily instanced, which is very bad for MMOs.

That looks nothing like any elder scrolls game. That looks like every other MMO I have ever seen, when it comes to art style. I can't imagine anyone actually buying this, when they can just get already polished games of the same style. I can't believe publishers are dumb enough to put no differentiation in their games and expect any sales, since the people who like the game you are cloning will just play the game you are cloning and not the clone, because they have time and effort invested in the original game, and your clone supplies no new content to make them switch.

Honestly I hope this game is an epic fail sales wise so they go back to focusing on making good single player games.

I sure hope this doesn't mean the end of the single player games

Not fully, but partially, it DOES. Obviously, this game will fail, just like most MMOs fail nowdays, because no one wants to pay $15 every month, short of a few people that have money to burn and will play MMOs for a few months before they get bored and quit.

Conan failed.. Warhammer failed.. Star Wars failed... D&D Online failed... This will fail too.

Once the game is bought, it should be yours forever, end of story. No if's or but's. Paying monthly for phone or cable is one thing, but paying monthly fees for a frigging GAME is ridiculous... If I already paid for a game once, there is no reason why I should pay again and again, and not be able to play if I stop paying.

I might have been interested if it had Elder Scrolls style combat, but it looks like Wow style combat. I'll pass.

He actually said (2:19) it will keep ES style combat (FPS-style mouse look, M1 attack, M1 hold power, M2 block, etc), which I think will be extremely difficult to play in an MMO. Can you imagine PvP-ing with the type of control like this?

Watched a quick preview from the Devs and was thoroughly not impressed. Gameplay and mechanics are about as generic as it gets. Mind you the single player combat was pretty boring too so can't say I am surprised. The single shard concept is decent but I don't think its enough. The talk of PvP piqued my interest but claiming that a new player can compete with a veteran needs more explanation.

Nothing here that will steal players from WOW long enough to keep them. Guild Wars pretty much does everything this game does with no sub. Free to play in 9 mos-1yr after release is my estimation. Pathetic really.

I just don't get why they think they need to break the mold and go MMO. The Elder Scrolls games are massively popular as they stand. And I have come to the opinion that MMOs are more made by lazy companies that don't want to continue to innovate but want to sit back and Bilk... Ahem.. Milk the gaming community for cash on an ongoing basis for nothing new. Rather than actually come up with new game content and ideas.

They're banking on the "I wish I could play Skyrim with my friends" crowd for a quick buck. This game won't last.

It definitely comes when the people who got into making games for the love of GAMES stop being the ones in charge. Then the people who are in it for a Business take over and ruin everything.

And I think it is actually more than just wanting to capitalize on a multi-player potential community for a quick buck. They are 'Trying' to create a revenue stream. Which is business speak. And is absolutely less to provided a needed outlet for the consumer. It is to line some business person's pocket.
