I wonder where all the "I'd fight for my country if it was a cause worth fighting for" people were right after 9/11? Was that not worth fighting for? Or maybe you're just content to let someone else do your fighting for you? Or maybe you're just cowards? Hmmmmm . . .

I'd say two and three. Should be fun to watch some more rationalization by the "intestinal fortitude" challenged, though.

There are many more ways to serve your country than fighting in a war. In fact the most effective way right now is to be a law abiding, productive citizen and let others decide how they want to run their lives.

Actually, I find this whole thread amusing. Most of all is the irony of watching those who want the most from our society claiming the right to avoid defending it.

"I want everything, and don't want to be forced to give anything back"

Be it in taxes or service they claim to have some right of avoidance.

I think this is the "Gimme and fsck off" generation, at least many here seem that way.

Yes, utterly amusing.

There is no one to go fight. Sure we went and beat up a few people but there is no really fight that requires more troops.

Oh, I specifically mentioned bad qualities in people here, but intentionally mentioned no names. I did not expect anyone to identify with them. Sorry, next time I can mention you by name in association with such traits.

I'm claiming the right to not defend the country. Especially since it is full of people such as yourself who I completely disagree ideologically with. No way am I going to put my life on the line for a bunch of statists.

Yet there are those who completely disagree with you who understand the obligations of citizenship and would act honorably to defend you.

Your positive qualities seem to diminish by the moment.

Good for them, they volunteer and get many military benefits.

Why do I have to "contribute" anything to society? I did not take anything from society, at least on my free will. Any benefits from the government that I have consumed was not my choice. I have already stated that I fully support a head tax and would be willing to pay my share of what I receive.

The government has deemed that my income is too low to pay taxes (except FICA which I discuss in another thread). Blame that on our @ss backwards tax system, NOT me.

if ATPN forum is a good representation of the rest of the country then I guess it is safe to say nationalism is dead...amazing how many here think up such excuses to get out of service...plenty of other countries have mandatory service and they manage to get educated and secure jobs as well...

There was a book written that talked about how people in America are feeling less and less a part of society(forgot the name), and are becoming more concerned only with their own lives. This can be illustrated by the growing tax gap. Well, I'm sorry to say but I am one of those people that the book describes. I am an individual first and foremost and frankly the more I see of society the more I want to be less a part of it. Sure, I have friends and family that I care about but I certainly feel no obligation to offer services to others just because they are Americans, hence my anti-statist views.

This is a need that is needed because of the fight on terror. It would be a problem even if we never invaded Iraq.

Serious question.

Why? What has qualitatively changed since 9/11 in this regard? Why would we need a draft if there were no war? Let me be clear, I think that a draft is a bad idea, except in time of need. I mean real, not hypothetical need.

I understand we need qualified people in the armed forces, however one might try to get them with a carrot instead of a stick in the form of a draft.

To be honest, I would say that "my" generation was no better than the current one in this regard (for reference, I was 18 in 1983).

Yep - seems that the "me" generation raised a batch of kids that *may* be even more selfish than themselves. Ofcourse there are still some of us who still believe in personal responsibility and making it on our own. But seems we are becoming a tiny minority since people figured out they can get the gov't to "cure their every ill".

Disgusting.

I'd take a break writing SQL queries for my company and write them for the army instead.

Select * from db..terrorists where loc = 'afganistan' and height > '74' and fname = 'osama'

It's been known for quite some time now that they will have to institute a two year rolling draft to even have a chance of maintaining the current level of Military operations that they have going in 128 World-Wide locations.

England should be proud of it's step-child adopting and doing so well with it's ill fated attempt at conquering and occupying the world.

ROFL! i bet all the lefty's are quaking in thier boots, that they might have to actually make a sacrifice themselves instead of taking the good little socialist route and letting others do it for them!

now hold hands...start singing "why can't we be friends" and hope for the best...also remember when people who hate you because your different than they are(despite the excuses you try to make for them) they "do not really mean it"
