The standard counter answer: God - an omnipotent being who dictated the Bible. God is infallible, therefore the Bible is infallible.

This argument has no end because neither side with cede their premises. /thread

God did not write the bible....fallible men did.

Except there's no proof of gods, anywhere. You can, however, see men all around you. You can even touch them. I shit you not!

To be perfectly frank, there is no argument to begin with. A lack of proof against its existence is not proof of its existence, nor is it an argument for the logic or respectability of having faith in it. That's insanity.

You don't need faith to have a lack of faith, either, so let's not get into the whole bullshit-storm of "you believe god doesn't exist, that requires a leap of faith, too! hurf durf".

There is some argument out there (which can easily be Googled) that supports the assertion that "Literalism", the concept of taking the words in the Bible as literal truth, is itself a heresy. I tend to agree.

It's a simple concept. I believe in an all-knowing, all-powerful God.

If I believe in an all-knowing, all-powerful God, I therefore believe He is powerful enough to have caused a chain of events which make the Bible His word, channeled through the right people.

So your logic does not hold here. It often does not when talking about religion. If I wanted proof of everything I wouldn't be a Christian.

The entire point of the bible is to hold it in your non-shooting hand when you're doing some good old Western divine retribution.

The logic of arguing against God doesn't 'not hold', faith simply causes folks to shove thier fingers in their ears and scream 'NANANANAHHH!!!!! I can't HEAR you!!!!!!!!'.

Which frankly is much less annoying than giving that sad knowing smile and telling me that when the time is right, I too will learn to have faith in mythical beings.

No, the logic does not hold. I am hearing you, I understand that men wrote the Bible. I also understand that I believe in an all-powerful God.

I hear you loud and clear, and I am completely OK with the fact that science cannot prove my faith. I also know that there's not a "right" time for everyone when they start believing.

You and I have completely different views of the World and that's fine. I understand your view but I also understand my own, that's the one I am going to stick with.

People can discuss religion pretty intensively even when not themselves religious. I suspect that if people were more religious, we would be discussing it less.

While digesting Reader's Digest
In the back of a dirty book store,
A plastic flag, with gum on the back,
Fell out on the floor.
Well, I picked it up and I ran outside
Slapped it on my window shield,
And if I could see old Betsy Ross
I'd tell her how good I feel.

Chorus:
But your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.
They're already overcrowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don't like killin'
No matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.

Well, I went to the bank this morning
And the cashier he said to me,
"If you join the Christmas club
We'll give you ten of them flags for free."
Well, I didn't mess around a bit
I took him up on what he said.
And I stuck them stickers all over my car
And one on my wife's forehead.

Repeat Chorus:

Well, I got my window shield so filled
With flags I couldn't see.
So, I ran the car upside a curb
And right into a tree.
By the time they got a doctor down
I was already dead.
And I'll never understand why the man
Standing in the Pearly Gates said...

"But your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.
We're already overcrowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don't like killin'
No matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more."

wow. what a relevant song

There is some argument out there (which can easily be Googled) that supports the assertion that "Literalism", the concept of taking the words in the Bible as literal truth, is itself a heresy. I tend to agree.

That concept did not arise until science started shooting provable holes in the fairy tales. Before all the old stolen myths were getting turned into laughingstocks it was heresy NOT to take the bible literally. The church was out there selling the ark and the burning bush and the young earth and all the other garbage as the absolute indisputable truth for 2000 years. Then along comes science and the church has spent the last 20 years backpedaling saying "no, no, we didn't mean it...". BULLSHIT. They did damn well mean it and they spent centuries stoning, murdering and torturing people who did not swallow every single word of the big book of fairy tales.

Wow, are you wrong.

The literal vs non-literal translation of the Bible has been an argument from nearly the moment the Bible was compiled.

That's because we have a few religious members. : /

How many posts does it take to make 'religous member'?

(I just made platinum member.)

Ahh, yes. So if you believe in the bible, you're gullible. Makes sense.

Not by the major religions it wasn't. The big religions based on the bible ALL sold the bible as the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Christianity sold every single comma and period in the bible as the word of god. The literal argument was a mental masturbation exercise participated in by non-practicing "scholars" in the insulated world of academia. The religions themselves did not engage in the practice to even a tiny degree. The bible was viewed as unassailable fact and in many times and places it was a death sentence to even suggest otherwise.

The Bible is fallible.

Let's apply these principles to science and its ideas such as Darwinism. I bet you would defend those vehemently.
