Norwegian Wood is a brilliant song. Yellow Submarine... wow. I mean, it's an OK song, but even just within The Beatles catalog, I could name at least 30 songs I prefer.

I like them in small quantities, no way I can listen to them for an extended amount of time though

I like the book Norwegian Wood better than the song. The song is ok too though I guess. :D

Honestly, you're on the wrong forum with the wrong people to be asking this question.

The biggest age group around here is under 30 and doesn't have a clue what the Beatles were to the world or understand how the changed music. They were probably the most belove band to ever play. They were fortunate to be during a time where music was really changing, the world was changing and they were a big influence in that.

Their record company, EMI, estimated that by 1985 they had sold over one billion records worldwide (It's somewhere north of 1.3 billion now)

Take a look at their records...it's insane

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T...ales,_worldwide_charts

31 top 10 albums
20 #1 albums
Most weeks at no. 1 in the Billboard albums chart (132 weeks at no. 1). That's over two and a half years at #1!
White Album = 19x platinum
THREE #1 albums in the same year (They did this 3 times!)
Most songs in the Billboard Top 5 at the same time = They held all top 5 spots! No one will ever do this again.

It's threads like this that remind me why I come here in the first place: it provides me with an opportunity to see how the lowest common denominator among us thinks.

They have serious lack of taste in women unfortunately. You think they're pimps based on their songs, but nope, they suck donkey balls when it comes to women. I don't think any of them had/have a man card. I like a few of their songs, but not obsessed like a whole lotta people. I don't have a single one of their albums.

My favorite Beatles song was nothing but a poor remake of an Isleys Brother song (Twist & Shout) Yesterday is a good song, but I don't see what all the fuss is about. They sold a shitload of records and were a good band but the praise they get is crazy. But they're worlds ahead of Elvis who's almost up there with them in terms of record sales.

Crazy to think in a few years Mariah Carey will have broken just about every record they set, and in a fraction of the time it took them.

That would be your opinion, I can't argue how many records they sold, and the fact they influenced a lot of people. But who influenced the Beatles? they deserve the credit don't they? Rock & Roll wouldn't even exist today, or not as we know it without Chuck Berry & Ike Turner. Ike was much more behind the scenes but his influence is crazy. He's credited with producing the first rock and roll song.

Beatles took what black people couldn't have done at the time and made it popular, much like Elvis. Except the Beatles did have talent and did make some really good songs, where Elvis was a completely poor culture stealing fat mostly talentless fuck.

For a group I might even say the Isleys have had more influence, and they're still around today making music.

It pisses me off when people say the Beatles were gods as much as it does when people say the Beatles sucked. They weren't that great, but they changed some things.

And OMG Frank would have hated you for lumping him into the same school as some English jungle music punks like the Beatles (his own words would have been far far harsher so please be kind).

Still, when it comes to (in the words of the late great Ahmet Ertegün, founder of Atlantic Records) "Black American music and the white imitation thereof" (and in this specifically the latter), I have always been a fan of the Rolling Stones, Cream/Yardbirds/Led Zeppelin, and the Doors, before the Beatles.
I think that's because the Beatles were a bit too much of the "white imitation thereof" for my tastes. Meh.

Mariah Carey debuted in 1990. She's still recording music. That's 18+ years active. The Beatles released their first album in 1962, and broke up in 1970. 9 years. They were active half as long as Mariah Carey. That hardly indicates that Mariah Carey is breaking records in a fraction of the time it took The Beatles. And despite being active less than half as long as Mariah Carey, they still managed to release more studio albums than she has to date... I don't know what to make of that, honestly, except wow they were cranking them out. Despite Mariah Carey's undeniable success, in 40 years, no one is going to be talking about "Carey-mania."

Just saying...

The Beatles were like the 60s version of a boy band. Campy, sappy songs about love designed to appeal to a predominantly young female audience. Granted, they had much greater musical talent than the guys from Backstreet Boys or N'Sync (remember when bands could play instruments?), but a lot of their stuff, especially in their early catalog, is sappy and ridiculous. I can think of lots of music I'd rather listen to than The Beatles (never been a huge fan of the Stones or the Doors personally, though I like some of their stuff).

IMO, the beatles have a handful of pretty good songs and a pile of awful ones. And I like many types of good music, from Bach to Miles Davis to Sinatra to Rush to the Decemberists.

If by "a lot" you mean less than 10%.

Even most of their worst songs are better than most of what's being produced today.

The beatles came into their own talent wise with the Revolver album and every album since that one was genius. Only a knuckle dragging bunghole yodeling moron would even think to compare them to a Boy Band. There has yet to be a band that compares to them.

BTW even though I was around at the very begining of the ascent I was more of an Animals, Stones and Yard Birds until they put out revolver. Sgt Peppers and the White Album were both genius and changed the face of music, at least in the Rock genre

None of their later work is sappy. All you seem to have heard is their early stuff, and everyone agrees that it's the worst period for the band, but they were a boy band back then.

Sgt Pepper's, Magical Mystery Tour, Rubber Soul, Abbey Road, these albums combined have maybe one love song, and it's not poppy at all, unless you really want to stretch the definition of a love song (is Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds a love song?)

People who say this usually haven't even heard all of their music. Try their later albums
