And OMG Frank would have hated you for lumping him into the same school as some English jungle music punks like the Beatles (his own words would have been far far harsher so please be kind).

Still, when it comes to (in the words of the late great Ahmet Ertegün, founder of Atlantic Records) "Black American music and the white imitation thereof" (and in this specifically the latter), I have always been a fan of the Rolling Stones, Cream/Yardbirds/Led Zeppelin, and the Doors, before the Beatles.
I think that's because the Beatles were a bit too much of the "white imitation thereof" for my tastes. Meh.

The Beatles were like the 60s version of a boy band. Campy, sappy songs about love designed to appeal to a predominantly young female audience. Granted, they had much greater musical talent than the guys from Backstreet Boys or N'Sync (remember when bands could play instruments?), but a lot of their stuff, especially in their early catalog, is sappy and ridiculous. I can think of lots of music I'd rather listen to than The Beatles (never been a huge fan of the Stones or the Doors personally, though I like some of their stuff).
The beatles came into their own talent wise with the Revolver album and every album since that one was genius. Only a knuckle dragging bunghole yodeling moron would even think to compare them to a Boy Band. There has yet to be a band that compares to them.

BTW even though I was around at the very begining of the ascent I was more of an Animals, Stones and Yard Birds until they put out revolver. Sgt Peppers and the White Album were both genius and changed the face of music, at least in the Rock genre

I am in complete agreement with this post.

Except, my issue is that (even though I wasn't born yet) the thing about the Beatles ascending by Revolver is that many other bands were doing the same then too.
But yeah, they were all great. Sgt. Pepper's is a magical album. I wish I had been there.
Another thing is that the Beatles completely revolutionized the science of music recording. That alone makes them great if you look at what they did there.

Abby Road Studios is still considered THE place to go in Europe to record an album.

Actually a lot of the Bands followed the Beatles lead after their Sgt Peppers album including the Stones, The Animals and the Beach Boys. Of course the Beatles were influenced by their visit to San Francisco and the Haight in the late 60's at the height of the Hippie Movement.

IIRC, Pepper's was the first successful multitrack record. Very groundbreaking when you consider that all previous albums were essentially live.

Heh, you're killin' me, old man :p

Not quite the same thing IIRC.

I thought he just recorded a mass of instruments on one mic?

When I get older, losing my hair
Many years from now
Will you still be sending me a Valentine
Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?
If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door?

Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four?

You'll be older too
And if you say the word
I could stay with you
I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday morning, go for a ride
Doing the garden, digging the weeds
Who could ask for more?

Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four?

Every summer we can rent a cottage in the Isle of Wight
If it?s not too dear
We shall scrimp and save!
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck, and Dave
Send me a postcard, drop me a line
Stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say;
Yours sincerely, wasting away!
Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine forevermore

Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four?

:p

I read the news today oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn?t notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They?d seen his face before
Nobody was really sure
If he was from the House of Lords.
I saw a film today oh boy
The English Army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
But I just had to look
Having read the book.
I?d love to turn you on

Woke up, got out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
And somebody spoke and I went into a dream

I read the news today oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes
To fill the Albert Hall.
I?d love to turn you on.

I like several Beatles songs, but there is a bunch of their stuff that makes my ears cry.

KT

I don't think you've listened to enough Beatles songs :p

I think I prefer their later stuff, as I find their early stuff too poppy for my tastes. I prefer the Stones over that same period.

KT

I agree totally.

-1 You're the original Fool on the Hill.

When the Beatles hit the Airwaves they weren't all that groundbreaking as far as music goes. Their style was just a continuation of a genre that started in the late 50's with Elvis, The Everly Brothers , Chuck Berry and the like whom the Beatles acknowledged were their inspiration. What made them different is they were English.

As times changed so did the Beatles becoming more socially aware and edgier which is when they really showed their talents and genius. The Boy Bands you compared them too were just a product of the Record Executives and they never really made a significant lasting impact on music for the better.

The Beatles were crap. And it was a sign of the downfall of American and English culture that they were so popular.

Beatles were very overrated. Funny how the guys who wrote stuff like "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" are considered songwriting gods. I guess they were the first band that really blew up in the British Invasion, so they got this status whether they deserved it or not. I've no problem with them, just don't think they are all that.

Can't, I've posted in this thread so I can't moderate it nor would I want too. If somebody makes fun of you for your foolish post it's totally understandable.

Because they are not acknowledged for that song, it's songs like Yesterday, In My Life and Norwegian Woods among many others that has given them the recognition for Lyrical Genius.

I know, but it's the songs like I mentioned that got them popular in the first place, or nobody would have ever bought the albums with the other songs on them..not if they'd started out writing songs like on Revolver.

Yeah when they first started out they were young, fairly inexperienced and not very worldly or sophisitcated. Sounds like most great artisits.

chicken or the egg though - without the multitude of experiences of being rock gods in the 60s as the beatles were they could not have written revolver, pepper's, rubber soul etc.

the early beatles were not the greatest band in the world. however, their popularity was ridiculous (due to the boy band thing, although if you play your own instruments you are infinitely better than our definition of boy band)

the beatles were rare in that they took their popularity and changed it into something even better (actual great albums of music) which they wrote AND played. revolutionary music of depth never before seen. and heard by millions more fans than ever before.
and music hasn't been the same since.

even if you (generic you) disagree with my first or second paragraph, the 3rd is simply fact. if you deny that any beatles album including and after revolver isn't a great piece of music (i consider the beatles albums in total to be a single work, their track arrangement is really precise) then i find your musical taste questionable.

(except revolution 9...god i hate that song)

From the early era. I'd rather listen to Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and of course Robert Johnson..then the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, Cream, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin(the True Gods) and Black Sabbath

The Beatles were just too poppish for my taste

Did they come up with Rocky Raccoon?

I came across something this morning that indicated it's a Beatles song.
