the early beatles were not the greatest band in the world. however, their popularity was ridiculous (due to the boy band thing, although if you play your own instruments you are infinitely better than our definition of boy band)

the beatles were rare in that they took their popularity and changed it into something even better (actual great albums of music) which they wrote AND played. revolutionary music of depth never before seen. and heard by millions more fans than ever before.
and music hasn't been the same since.

even if you (generic you) disagree with my first or second paragraph, the 3rd is simply fact. if you deny that any beatles album including and after revolver isn't a great piece of music (i consider the beatles albums in total to be a single work, their track arrangement is really precise) then i find your musical taste questionable.

(except revolution 9...god i hate that song)

I agree with that. Most artists these days put out their first album which is great, and when they garner their success off of that, any music thereafter goes to crap.

Good post.

Because they are not acknowledged for that song, it's songs like Yesterday, In My Life and Norwegian Woods among many others that has given them the recognition for Lyrical Genius.

Lyrical genius, right. :disgust:

In My Life

There are places i'll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends i still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life i've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When i think of love as something new
Though i know i'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know i'll often stop and think about them
In my life i love you more

Though i know i'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know i'll often stop and think about them
In my life i love you more
In my life i love you more

Yesterday which is the most covered song of all time.

Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away,
Now it looks as though they're here to stay,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly,
I'm not half the man I used to be,
There's a shadow hanging over me,
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

Why she
Had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say.
I said,
Something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Why she
Had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say.
I said,
Something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm.

BTW Yesterday was written in 1965 for the Help Album. Not bad for a so called Pop Boy Band.

Lennon received a letter from a pupil at Quarry Bank Grammar School, which he had attended. The writer mentioned that the English master was making his class analyse Beatles lyrics (Lennon wrote an answer, dated September 1, 1967, which was auctioned by Christie's of London in 1992). Lennon, amused that a teacher was putting so much effort into understanding Beatles lyrics, wrote the most confusing lyric he could. Lennon's friend and former fellow member of The Quarrymen, Peter Shotton, was visiting, and Lennon asked Shotton about a playground nursery rhyme they sang as children.

He basically wrote it for idiots who over analyze lyrics. Sound familiar? :disgust:

Sgt Pepper's, Magical Mystery Tour, Rubber Soul, Abbey Road, these albums combined have maybe one love song, and it's not poppy at all, unless you really want to stretch the definition of a love song (is Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds a love song?)

Your reading comprehension fails. I have been defending The Beatles through most of this thread. The only Beatles albums I don't own are With the Beatles and Beatles for Sale (their early work). Clearly they started to come into their all on Revolver and subsequent albums.

As for stretching the definition of a love song, I would've gone with Run For Your Life, one of the creepier songs ever written (you better run for your life if you can, little girl, I catch you with another man, that's the end... that's fucked up).

To be fair, the Beatles were the original boy band... well, them and the Beach Boys. The differences between the Beatles and modern boy bands are patently obvious; the Beatles wrote their own music, played their own instruments, and were incredibly prolific, releasing 2 albums a year in their early years, and continuing to release an album every year while touring and filming movies. The Beatles are obviously more talented than any of the designer boy bands from the 90s. That said, the early work of the Beatles was predominantly sappy love songs designed to appeal to young women, the exact same songs done by boy bands throughout the 20th century.

The biggest difference between the Beatles and other boy bands is the Beatles managed to evolve. Good thing too, since every album post-Help! is a certified classic (Help! included... I like the sappy love songs on that album :D).

You spelled "beetles" wrong and no, they're not gods. They're just insects with a bit extra armor on their backs. Stag beetles are pretty sweet, though.

Yesterday's lyrics are pretty basic to me. It's a typical "love lost" song. I like it, don't get me wrong. But it's not even close to "lyrical genius".

You are totally over looking all the other bands that started that genre like the Everly Brothers.

Check out the Cowboy Junkies' cover of Run For Your Life, one of the best Beatles covers as far as I'm concerned.

BTW even though I was around at the very begining of the ascent I was more of an Animals, Stones and Yard Birds until they put out revolver. Sgt Peppers and the White Album were both genius and changed the face of music, at least in the Rock genre

I am in complete agreement with this post.

Except, my issue is that (even though I wasn't born yet) the thing about the Beatles ascending by Revolver is that many other bands were doing the same then too.
But yeah, they were all great. Sgt. Pepper's is a magical album. I wish I had been there.
Another thing is that the Beatles completely revolutionized the science of music recording. That alone makes them great if you look at what they did there.
Actually a lot of the Bands followed the Beatles lead after their Sgt Peppers album including the Stones, The Animals and the Beach Boys. Of course the Beatles were influenced by their visit to San Francisco and the Haight in the late 60's at the height of the Hippie Movement.
IIRC, Pepper's was the first successful multitrack record. Very groundbreaking when you consider that all previous albums were essentially live.

Multitrack machines were around since the late 50's and were commonplace in the early '60's. Brian Wilson (Beach Boys) was considered a genius for his efforts
with "Pet sounds", Paul McCartney later admitted that Beatles "nicked" a few ideas first pioneered by Brian. As for the comparing the Beatles to ANY of the boy bands
is a complete joke. The Beatles cut their teeth in the rough and tumble clubs of Hamburg Germany and later the infamous "Cavern" club. Manager Brian Epstein
insisted they clean up their act to become successful. Still they wrote, played, sang mostly their own songs and a few from the early albums I still love today,
" I'll follow the sun" I'll be back" " yes it is" were all examples from early albums and still sound great today..
