well, after last night where a BH was pwning for the whole round I have to agree with the bunny, there was no cover I could get to where I wasn't spotted after getting one shot (sometimes not even that) on the BH when I was toasted by the BH.

I quit the game rather than murder my KDR for no good reason.

I know you're trying to add to the convo here with your game knowledge but I'm pretty sure I have more experience on the matter here. The goal of the M95 is at the very least a damage deterrent, and with luck, hopefully every sniper using a bolt action rifle for sniping is using the M95 in order to do that damage, and with enough it will take down the chopper pretty easily.

Also using the extra ammo perk gives you 40 total shots, plenty for engaging a chopper, too many people unnecessarily crutch on the 12x upgrade instead of the extra ammo, the standard scope is more than enough for all but the longest of sniper engagements. And a true team oriented squad will have an assault to make the ammo point moot.

Regardless, I guarantee you'll run out of ammo trying, like an idiot, to shoot down a skilled chopper pilot with a gustav or AT4, long before a good sniper will, who can hit the best choppers with 90+% of their shots and at the very least drive the chopper away.

Again, even if the chopper isn't destroyed the damage is a deterrent. On my own I've successfully driven off almost every chopper to at least flee for repairs. With luck I can rally my fellow sniper teammates to switch to the M95 and start helping me with the chopper and we can then become a true threat to bring it down, as I can guarantee most players aren't aware that the M95 can be used to damage choppers - one of the M95's assets that make up for its otherwise glaring weaknesses (ie much slower reload time and firing rate). Ability to one-shot bullet destructible trees at any distance is another such advantage that most players don't know about, the other bolt action rifles will require two shots at range to bring down a tree.

you are likely way better than me, but god I hate the M95

fires so slow

Then you are lucky to be able to get a team that will do that. However the amount of damage you can do in one shot is minimal anyway. If you want to quickly drive one away you can try with a mounted machine gun, although that opens you up to snipers. With the number of bullets required and the reality that more often then not the chopper will quickly come back, I find it to be a waste of bullets. If your going to shoot at the heli, at least try to get the pilot. Otherwise I feel my time is better spent shooting people with the m95 both at range and up close.

Quick question guys... I've reversed the mouse Y axis for piloting, but it doesn't work when I use a joystick; mouse is reversed but not the joystick. How does this make any sense...?

Well the recent patch did increase its max damage range by 80% it looks like, so it should be one shot kill (even with a body shot) up to 18 meters vs. 10 meters on the other bolt action rifles (this is without magnum ammo), so that should really help its CQC abilities, particularly those who like throwing a RDS or ACOG on it :D

The reload rate is really bad at 6.9 seconds, however if you employ the animation circumvention (ie just switch a different item such as your pistol pistol and then immediately back to the rifle) you can cut that down to ~4.6 seconds - just pay attention to when the ammo in your hud is bumped back up to 5 and you'll know you're ready for immediate shooting after the animation circumvention.

Not really much you can do about the lower rate of fire, however I find its ability to damage all vehicles other than tanks and one-shot bullet destructable trees at any distance make it too valuable to pass up for any other bolt action rifle in defensive situations.

Then you are lucky to be able to get a team that will do that. However the amount of damage you can do in one shot is minimal anyway. If you want to quickly drive one away you can try with a mounted machine gun, although that opens you up to snipers. I'm talking about my actual and extensive experience here, not theory. I know what I'm talking about :p

Going for the pilot is good and all but not worth the time/effort. The speed and trajectory and distance of the chopper can be tricky enough to even just score a hit on the chopper itself let alone hit the head of the pilot. If you're being careful with shots trying to hit the head you might as well mess with rockets.

In less than 30 seconds I can pretty easily connect 8-10 or so shots into the chopper which is usually enough to scare it away.

Like offensive linemen in football, someone has to do the unglorfied work.

Does anyone not have tracer bullets for the vehicles any more? I used to be able to see tank shells, vehicle machine gun fire, and chopper cannon fire in the air on the way to the target. Now I can't see a thing. I just press fire and clouds of smoke pop up on the ground.

This makes is amazingly difficult as a chopper and tank gunner to hit air targets correctly.

Is this a bug on my set up or is anyone else experiencing this? 5850 cat. 10.5

Now that I think about it, I can't see bullets from my gun either.

edit: Yeah another bug introduced from a patch. It really takes away from the immersion of the game imo. I guess I needed a reason to quit anyway, since vehicles were the most fun for me. Hell, I haven't been on a non 24/7 Atamica server for months.

Yeah I've noticed it but I don't think its that huge of a deal. I suppose it sucks for newer players who are still trying to learn and gauge their bullet drops and get a feel for target leading. But I can still adjust my tank aim from the puffs of smoke/dust where my first shots hit, and I'm pretty familiar with how high I need to aim for bullet drop when sniping.

And for my turret/mounted machine gun fire I've always lead my target and paid more attention to the hit indicator on whatever vehicle (likely a chopper) I am aiming at to gauge and correct my aim.

New BFBC2: Vietnam Trailer: Flamethrowers everywhere!

New Battlefield Blog Post: Vietnam Hardware #5: See the Game-changing Flame-thrower in Action

# BY: H Brun
# POSTED : Nov 05, 2010, 12:00AM

New BFBC2: Vietnam Trailer: Flamethrowers everywhere!
Welcome to the fifth episode in our in-depth look at everything Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam. We saved a hot number from the weapons arsenal for you.

For the first time ever in a major Battlefield game, may we present to you: the flame-thrower.

Flame1.png

Enemy repellent.

This time-typical weapon used in the Vietnam War [and in our 2004 World War II mod for Battlefield Vietnam -- Editor's note] actually changes the way you play the game. Say you are hiding in the tunnel leading to M-COM station B on Hill 137. One way to keep the attackers out is by firing your flame-thrower out of the tunnel in a preventive manner. Any enemy going near will catch on fire and get other things to worry about than arming your M-COM ...

... Which neatly segues into how the flame-thrower affects enemies. Apart from taking taking damage directly by the fire, anyone caught in the blast starts burning health at a steady pace. There are however a number of ways to stop this gradual death from happening. One is using a medkit that you or a friendly medic has administered. Another way is running to the nearest source of water, which also will stop the fire.

Flame2.png

I can has tank flame now?

As our playtests rage on here at the DICE office, it's clear how much the flame-thrower gives to this expansion in terms of style and sheer aggressiveness. Check out the trailer above for more fire-based action, and remember to come back next Friday for even more info and screens from Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam.

Bad Company 2 Test Server Running Harvest Day (BC1 map)

Twitter user gBGummyBears discovered that a Battlefield: Bad Company 1 map has been spotted running on a Bad Company 2 DICE test server. The server, which is currently offline, was running bc1_harvest_day.

Also noted are 7 maps prefixed with "nam" most likely indicating Bad Company 2 Vietnam maps, although BFBC2:V has been said to have 4 maps. Thanks vp2008.

Great news about the flames. As far as I can remember we haven't had a lot of in game fire and I'd love to see how Frostbite handles it. I wonder if it propagates.

New Battlefield Blog Post: VIP Map Pack 7

VIP Map Pack 7 is all about listening to the community. When we ask for your favorite maps from Battlefield: Bad Company, Oasis and Harvest Day always come out on top. We are happy to announce that in VIP Map Pack 7, these two much-loved maps have been reworked for Battlefield : Bad Company 2. This means full Destruction 2.0 (buildings collapsing and micro destruction), enhanced graphics and lighting, and remastered ambient sounds and backgrounds. Below is a full brief of what's included in VIP Map Pack 7:

Map 1: Oasis
Origin: Battlefield: Bad Company multiplayer
Game modes: Rush, Conquest, Squad Rush, Squad Deathmatch

Map 2: Harvest Day
Origin: Battlefield: Bad Company multiplayer
Game modes: Rush, Conquest, Squad Rush, Squad Deathmatch

Map 3: Cold War
Origin: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 singleplayer
Game modes: Rush, Squad Rush, Squad Deathmatch

Map 4: Heavy Metal
Origin: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 singleplayer
Game modes: Conquest, Squad Rush, Squad Deathmatch

We met with level designer Cristian Pavel to get his thoughts on the remastering process, and on the popularity of Oasis in particular.

Hi Cristian! As a level designer, what is it that you actually do?
-- In short, balancing multiplayer gameplay on roughly built levels.
-- In detail, I would start with writing on paper the premises for a battle, the location, the setting, and the game mode(s) which suits that location. Then I would set up the level in a rough state, and getting it ready for a playtest. With the help from an artist, the level starts to get nicely shaped and pimped out while I update the gameplay experience according to playtest feedback until we can lock the level. Then it is ready to ship!

Playtest.png

Road to perdition.

How are you transforming Oasis from a BC1 map to a BC2 map?
-- We look back at what made the level appeal to such a large number of players in BC1 and then we add even more good stuff so we can deliver an even greater experience.
-- We first get a blueprint of the original level, then recreate it in the editor and start replacing the old BC1 assets with the new and optimized ones from BC2. Think about the full destruction buildings and micro destruction materials like wood fences and concrete covers, which I know players love to tear apart.
-- Then we dress it up with suitable ambient sounds for each part of the level, new weather settings, a variety of sand storm effects, and an overall war ambient setting around the combat zone to remind you that this is not a field trip -- that you are part of an ongoing war when you play.

Are you changing the map in any way? How is it different playing this new version of Oasis from the old one?
-- The map has not been changed drastically, so returning players will feel right at home the moment they step into this Oasis. The revised parts of the levels are minor. For example, the gold crates in BC1 were located on the rooftops, which we can't have now that entire buildings can collapse. So we had to put the crates on the ground in some places. Things like that.
-- The city part of the level was improved as well, around the main street where the center flag was located in BC1 Conquest. Rush mode keeps the same five bases, and Conquest has the same three flags setup in the center, although in BC2 the home bases cannot be captured like they could in BC1 [Where we had a total of five flags back then -- Editor's note]. We also introduced both Squad Deathmatch and Squad Rush in the city area to make the most of this part of the level.

Do you have a favorite feature in this new version of Oasis that you could tell us about?
-- When we looked at the last part of the level -- the city area -- it seemed a bit too flat, and we looked at ways to improve it without changing the layout of the buildings too much. We finally decided to raise the hillside of the city by a couple of meters, creating a terrace on one side of the main street. Think about the urban area in Arica Harbor. We tried the same recipe for Oasis now with great success, and I hope you will like it as much as I do.

Why do you think Oasis is so loved by so many Battlefield players out there?
-- Oasis contains what Battlefield is all about. A variety of vehicles, from helicopters to tanks, jeeps, and boats. It also has enough space to let players show their creativity when driving these vehicles. Oasis switches from open environment to close quarters urban combat in the last bases of the Rush game mode. This type of contrast in environment appeals to players, because it suits all four Battlefield classes, from sniper to assault.

And there you have it. Check back this Wednesday for an in-depth look at Heavy Metal, one of the largest multiplayer maps ever for Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

For the latest news, make sure you also follow our official Battlefield channel on twitter on www.twitter.com/OfficialBFBC2

Peace

// www.twitter.com/zh1nt0

When?: "zh1nt0 said that the map pack will be released in the next 'few weeks' but NOT next week."

I guess we can close the books on this one. CONFIRMED.

There is a quote from the Community Manager saying this map pack will be out in a few weeks, so probably around Thanksgiving.

And what Zaitsev is referring to is, there should be another PC patch coming out before that to enable the map pack. It hopefully will fix the things broken with the last patch, and who knows, maybe fix VoIP? Seems like anythings possible lately, huh?

Here's some video to get you familiar with the maps they are talking about:

Harvest Day
Oasis
Cold War - probably the town section at ~4:30
Heavy Metal

New maps will be nice. The number one reason why I quit play BC2 was the lack of variety in maps.
