Town at Lake of the Ozarks bans open carrying of guns to avoid scaring off tourists

LAKE OZARK, Mo. • A southwest Missouri community at the Lake of the Ozarks has banned the open carrying of firearms, even by people who have a conceal-and-carry permit, to avoid frightening off potential tourists.

The Lake Ozark Board of Aldermen voted 4-2 on Tuesday to approve the ban, which still allows permit-holders to carry concealed weapons. The measure was initiated by Police Chief Mark Maples in response to concerns of residents and business owners, the Lake Sun Leader reported.

I'm not so sure. They'll certainly kill open carry wherever they go though, at which point their protests will be either severely limited or illegal. Should take the wind out of their sails.

Honestly I wouldn't mind legislation restricting open carry of rifles to "local or regional emergencies such as riots, natural disasters, or similar situations with a constant threat of public violence" or similar legalese.

When I am eating out, I don't want to see guns. You can try to argue that I am safer with armed people around. But by that standard, I am even safer eating at home. It's like when I went down to Tijuana with my buddies for lunch and I saw cops with assault rifles walking around. It may actually be a good thing for my safety in a relative sense, but it brings the point home that it's not safe there in an absolute sense. Not something you want to think about when enjoying your fajitas and margaritas. Of course over there, it's a worthwhile tradeoff, because the threat is actually real and significant. In the US, I am going to venture to guess that you are a lot more likely to choke on your burrito than get shot at a Chipotle.

This would be a good, common sense regulation. There are times in the world where you would want the ability to carry a rifle openly, but on a day to day basis it serves no rational purpose other than to scare or intimidate others.

Meh, that's one of the more reasonable OC "demonstrations" I've seen. He just walked around in public, no stupid signs, no stupid "sit-ins" at a restaurant or anything, didn't actively antagonize anyone. I still don't think it accomplished anything, but this one didn't have much to complain about.

You see when you said "kids", I was all ready to be outraged by some rednecks strapping an AR-15 onto a 6 year old and marching it around or something. The man in question is at least in his twenties. Judging by his hairline likely his mid or late twenties, maybe early thirties. And he wasn't acting particularly childlike either. Maybe people your age don't do it because they can't carry a rifle and a walker at the same time.

Yeah it's most certainly a cry for attention, like all political protests. But in this case the guy was just walking around in public areas with a gun. He wasn't challenging anyone, wasn't provoking anyone, wasn't making a scene out of it, in fact it kinda looked like his motivation was to show that open carrying a rifle can be done with minimal friction. I've seen protests for animal rights and both sides of the abortion debate that were many times more offensive than this guy.

And, pray tell, when did Chipolte gain the ability to create law? Pretty sure all they can do is ask that you don't carry, there is no penalty under law if you have a permit.

EDIT: Also, Chipolte is no longer allowing the display of guns, so no open carry, concealed would be unaffected.

Couldn't you be charged with trespassing or something if you enter an establishment that has clearly marked that they do not allow weapons and are somehow found with one? Besides, all of the CHL holders I know are very respectful people and just as they wish for people to respect their gun rights they also respect other peoples rights which includes property rights.

This. And IIRC some states have laws where carrying in a business that posts a "no firearms allowed" sign carries specific legal penalties.
