On serious note. the big cities in Texas are pretty decent places to live. Dallas, Austin, Houston.

Where in TX? A lot of unique places there.
Austin is downright awesome.
Don't let the MOPAC scare you, it's nowhere as bad as SoCal or Atalanta.

Texas would be an absolutely awesome state were it not for the fact that it's full of fucking Bible thumpers.

Depends where you live and who you associate with. If you live in a big city and live among educated people (not low income neighborhoods) you don't see the Bible thumping.

Even then, I grew up in Lubbock which is pretty religious. The religiousness has hardly any impact on your life.

El Paso is very religious, but it's actually quite liberal these days.

even then, i grew up in lubbock which worships high school football, which in west texas in a religion unto itself.

ftfy 🙂

EDIT:
Not trying to be a dick. I grew up in Oklahoma, but my Mom has family scattered all through West Texas from Pampa to the 20/10 junction, we spent many Summers down there.

Austin is awesome, but the rest of the state pretty much sucks serious ass on a long-term basis. I live in DFW, have for most of my life, and yeah it sucks. If I didn't have so much here connected to family/friends/business, I'd be long gone.

Pros :

Cost of living reasonable.
Plenty of good food.

Negatives :

Everything takes forever to get to (super metropolis sprawl)
Summers will fucking murder you and your electric bills (was 110 today, kind of normal for TX summer)
Probably more cops per capita than anywhere in the world, and 99% of them have nothing to do but try to generate bonus checks from ticketing folks
The beaches are ass even if you're close enough to get to one
The landscape looks like the toilet paper that god used after taking a dump after making actually beautiful places like california, montana, maine, etc
A couple decades of hyper social conservative bs like Bush/Perry have resulted in potentially the dumbest populace imaginable
Socially, you'll find that most people are either rednecks, thugs, or snobs, or a combination thereof
People here can't drive for fuck. One of my business associates was killed by someone not paying attention. Back in '94 my fiancee and 5 week old son were killed by an inattentive driver. I've been rear-ended twice in the past three years, my gf got hit and run last january, and my ex-wife got rear-ended while driving my car by an illegal immigrant with no insurance a few years back.

Basically fuck this place, though I can imagine that Michigan might even be worse.

Uhhh Texas is fucking gigantic.

Meh... It's really not that big. I had to go there for a training once. On my way back to the airport the shuttle driver kept going on and on about how big it was. Then he asked where we were from. As each passenger answered he'd say something like "Yes... You could fit X number of your state into the borders of Texas". Then he asked me where I was from...

"Alaska"

He didn't say another word all the way to the airport.

Apparently, people there have a penis-envy-like ego thing about how big they are.

Hmm... honestly, I don't remember high school football being that big of a deal...
