My friend had his car stolen down there. I've also heard a lot of similar stories. I kinda question the safety aspect.
yeah. The car thing can be bad in central and east El Paso. But that is the only thing I would worry about. Honestly, it's a pretty safe place, especially the west side.

OP, I have to warn you. It is freaking hot (over 100 degree) down here.

Austin is nice but with the highest cost of living in TX.

Other big cities such as DFW, SA, Houston are ok but have problems just as any big cities would have (traffic, crimes, stupid drivers, etc.).

LOL, San Antonio is a hell of a lot nicer than Houston :).

Agreed. Also it's usually not as humid as Houston. And now the temp is about 10 degrees cooler than Austin and Dallas (Still, it's going to be around 100 later)

I lived in Both Houston (6 or so years) and San Antonio (about 6 months). I liked San Antonio but there's a hell of a lot more going on in Houston. Houston can be a pretty great place to live. The summers are brutal, though.

Not that I've escaped that by moving to upstate NY. It was 101 degrees here a week or two ago, and not an airconditioner in sight.

My company wanted to move me to Plano, TX. I simply quit and got a better job with a much better salary here in the bay area.

I moved down from Cleveland to Austin last year. I netted a 36% raise + reloc and annual bonus, which was worth it to me. Feel free to send a PM if you need any advice. As previously mentioned, it is really, really fucking hot down here!

My car has no A/C after 10 minutes of driving, 30 minutes in the car and I'm fucking drenched.

good cost of living in most places. big cities have decent culture, but are pretty ugly. good education in the city suburbs. not a bad place to raise a family at all.

i grew up in houston, went to school in austin after college only wanted to stay in texas if austin. so now im in the east coast.

It isn't usually this hot here. It has been around 10 degrees warmer on average the last few months. The difference between 97 and 107 is pretty substantial.

East of Dallas.

East of Dallas gets really rural pretty quick. Specific town?

Of course if your accustomed to living in a small town you might love it.
Once you get about 100mi east of Dallas you hit the "piney woods" a large area of dense tall pine forest where bigfoot lives :)

What part of MI? If its rust belt (flint to Detroit, and the western suburbs)- get the hell out of there!!!!!! How can you even afford a computer and internet what with all the unemployment!!!!

if its more like lansing to Kzoo or points north, well its just damn pretty there, and Texas is realllllly flat and pretty scrub boring, and stuff is FAR! Say goodbye to ever having to warm up your car or to scrape ice or shovel the walkway.... Oh yeah and your car will thank you too what without the massive potholes and fissures that regularly for and swallow cars whole in MI. Texas has beautiful smooth perfect roads in comparison.

And as everyone mentioned it's pretty damn hot here in July and August, but the short winters more than make up for it IMHO. We sometimes go years without snowfall or a really hard freeze. 65-75 degrees at Christmas time is not unheard of, and Sept/Oct/Nov is almost always nice temps, and spring usually starts in late Feb.
