Students wore burkas in a school in Texas as part of a geography class. Many parents are upset that the school is promoting Islam and

The online news site WND reported that a student had quoted a teacher as saying, "We are going to change your perception of Islam.

The students wore the burkas but weren't taught about the fact that many women are forced to wear it and face death/beating for refusal. As well many parents are angry the school is teaching a biased curriculum.

There was no mention of Christianity or any teachings during that class. As well the students were told to call terrorists "freedom fighters"

The teacher and everyone responsible for this must face discipline and need to be suspended or fired for allowing this to even happen. There is nothing wrong with promoting tolerance of other religions but this wasn't that at all by refusing to mention the underlying facts about the burka and calling terrorists "freedom fighters"

What do you think should happen to the teacher and everyone else involved with this?

The students that wore them were doing so voluntarily.

The teacher wanted students to realise that just because someone wears that clothing you do not need to fear them.

Acknowledging other cultures exist and teaching about them is normal history/geography.

I agree with this. The students were never taught about the death threats/beatings many women face for not wearing the burka. This is very significant.

Yes. The Quran explicitly says you are supposed to beat the fuck out of women. The ones who are extreme enough to follow the rules about dressing head to toe are the same ones that are extreme enough to be violent nutcases.

My opinion might be slanted. I grew up near a few Lebanese households and it was not unusual to hear screaming inside the houses. What was weird was that men were not expected to do anything. If someone was mowing the lawn or trimming the hedges, it was always a woman. I saw the little girl run the lawn mower several times, but I've never once seen the father do it. Lebanese people I knew said that was just part of the culture. At home, men do no work.

It's important to hear how shitty things are in other countries or how bad they were in the past because it helps us understand why some people are so upset about certain things. Those ugly feminists have a good point - you won't hear many stories about men with deformed feat or broken ribs just for the sake of fashion, so it's understandable why someone would be so vocal against fashion and perceptions of beauty.

Anyway, Islam. Hiding the negative aspects of any culture is bad for our own society because that prevents us from learning their mistakes. Students SHOULD learn about Islam and Christianity, both good and bad parts. Getting the whole story is what education is all about.

I think you're probably making a pretty large leap between expecting women to wear religion-appropriate clothing to outright brutality.

While the number of men seriously capable of beating the shit out of the women they've married is horrifically high, I don't expect that all, or even most, Muslim men do.

TBH, that's kind of an unfair assumption. Beating people, especially when they are defenseless, is not something people can do easily.

I listen to a lot of podcasts at work, and I remember one of them featured a daughter of Fred Phelps, the Westboro Baptist asshole. Her account sounded every bit as repressive as Islam, and she used words like "escape" to describe her leaving the church. She had to sneak away with nothing because she would be physically abused if she said the wrong thing or talked about wanting to leave.

I see your point. I guess that all Muslim women who wear the traditional garb belong to households where the male is a fanatic / extremist, and also capable of horrific brutality (coz all Muslims are made of that tough stuff!). I also guess that the women continually buck the religion, because, you know, they hate it and actually do "know better"(like "we" do), and so continually ask for a beating.
