I support the husband in this cae.

But no matter what happens now, this has turned into both a tragedy and a farce.

let the woman die already, i'm sick of hearing about it. her whole family is a bunch of media whores. Congress is so bored they got nothing better to do than meddle into a private family matters and listen to steroid junky baseball players all day long. This country is pathetic

You know this story will never end. People in this country tend to get carried away with miniscule issues like this one. Ever notice how people get so passionate about things that will never effect them like gay marriage, this case, and praying in school. When are people going to wake up and talk about legitimate issues like the price of gasoline and health care which are making people go broke. I bet she'll still be alive in 5 years.

If all goes as Bush and Frist want, they can plant her in the Rose Garden at the Whitehouse so all can admire her vegetative state.

Wonder what Oregonians feel about this? Any over there in this thread???
Aye. I'd say at this point we're just waiting for Congress to find a way to outlaw our suicide act; Ashcroft already got the ball rolling.

Thanks, well it's Official now:

WASHINGTON - Senate Republicans embroiled in the life-or-death legal battle over the severely brain-damaged Terri Schiavo invited the Florida woman to testify to Congress in a procedural move intended to keep her on life support.

The OP of this thread really needs to change the Title to:

Republicans make Official moves to keep Schiavo alive forever

Doesn't Congress have anything better to do than to listen to a brain dead woman make grunting and gurgling sounds?

According to CNN.com, the tube has been removed.

I wish they could euthanize her instead of letting her starve.

Yep, slow death has begun:

Brain-Damaged Woman's Feeding Tube Removed

Outside Schiavo's hospice, about 30 people keeping vigil dropped to their knees in prayer when word spread of the judge's ruling calling for removal of the tube.

"What can wash away our sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus," they sang. Messages on protest signs included "Impeach Greer.com," a reference to the judge, and "Execution ? It's Not Just for the Guilty Anymore."

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, told reporters in Washington earlier Friday that removal of the tube amounted to "barbarism."

you know what's ironic about all the religious wackos, the ones who claim science is bad. it's science that has kept her alive. If 'god' had had it his way, she'd have been plant food 15yrs ago. It's unnatural to keep her alive.

You know all she has is a feeding tube, right? Nothing is pumping her heart or helping her breathe... not really high tech.

you said it yourself:

If she has some brain activity this is one of the most cruel things you can do to a person.

Talk about taking me out of context. I am obviously talking about making her starve and dehydrate to death.

TAMPA, Fla. - A state appeals court Wednesday refused to block the removal of Terri Schiavo's feeding tube later this week, shifting the focus in the right-to-die dispute to the Legislature.

The 2nd District Court of Appeal in Lakeland turned down a request by Bob and Mary Schindler for a delay while they pursue further appeals, and for a new trial on their daughter's fate.

The tube is scheduled to be removed on Friday at 1 p.m.

The appeals court said the issues that the Schindlers raised were not new and had been dealt with by numerous courts.

"Not only has Mrs. Schiavo's case been given due process, but few, if any similar cases have ever been afforded this heightened level of process," Chief Judge Chris Altenbernd said.

Florida legislators, meanwhile, pressed ahead with bills to block Michael Schiavo from having his wife's feeding tube removed. The Senate and House were scheduled to consider competing bills Thursday, but negotiators said it would be difficult to reconcile them in time.

"We need to able to talk long and hard about this," said state Rep. Shelley Vana.

The Schindlers' attorney, Barbara Weller, said she was not surprised by the ruling. She would not say if it would be appealed to the Florida Supreme Court (news - web sites).

George Felos, Michael Schiavo's lawyer, did not immediately return calls.

Schiavo, 41, suffered severe brain damage in 1990 when her heart stopped, and court-appointed doctors say she is in a persistent vegetative state. Her husband says she told him she would not want to be kept alive artificially. Her parents dispute that, and say she could get better.

Late last month, Circuit Judge George Greer granted Michael Schiavo permission to remove the feeding tube. After that, it could take a week or two for Terri Schiavo to die.

Finally, this poor woman will be allowed to pass away like she wanted to. Just a few more hurdles to go.

I can't believe her parents are so selfish and would keep her in a brain dead coma against her wishes.

Cab you show me your proof for this statement?

Interesting, bleeding heart liberals don't understand the madness of the neo-conservatives either.

what? i'm not a bleeding heart, but i am pro-choice, i mean pro-death. i have no problem with her finally being allowed to die, or with killing fetuses.

i wasn't aware that any pro-choice "bleeding heart liberals" had a problem with her being allowed to die.

Well if she lived in Oregon or Netherlands could administer quick lethal drugs.

While I feel that would be a blessing, your facts aren't correct; at least as far as Oregon is concerned.
With the Oregon Death With Dignity Act, the doctor has to "confirm the patient is competent and acting voluntarily." That is something that would be impossible to do at this point.
On to another person's point, the "bleeding hear liberals wringing their hands with guilt over Terri, but demanding the unfettered right to killing infants."
All I've seen is Conservatives having a problem with letting Terri die; not the liberals that want the "unfettered right to killing infants." Possibly I've missed it but I really haven't seen any Dem take a stand against letting her die.
BTW, if it wasn't already plain enough (Duhh!), I'm a conservative but dissagree with those in my party that have tried to stop the process of letting her die.
One last point is those that are having a cow about her dying of starvation and dehydration. There is no suffering involved, other than perhaps persistant dry mouth and lips; which is easily treated with moisturizers and ointments. The patient slowly drifts into a coma and if there is any sort of sign (in this case I doubt it) of disscomfort, they administer either morphine or fentanyl; both powerful pain medications.
Folks, I know this from (unfortunately) very recent experience. The doctors will not allow any disscomfort at all. They are allowed to control that through medications under what they refer to as "comfort care". Although in this case it will be fairly slow, it will be peaceful and dignified. Dissagree with letting her die if you want but don't try to fire up emotional responses by painting a picture of this poor girl agonizing and suffering long term from starvation and dehydration. You don't know what you are talking about. It won't happen and that's a good thing, if there can be a good thing in a case like this.

Cab you show me your proof for this statement?

This is what the husband claims - that the wife expressed to him that she wouldn't want to stay alive in a coma. There is no written proof. But there is also no ulterior motive - i mean the parents offered him at least 1 million not to get her off the tube, and he refused. Any money he had gotten from malpractice suits is now gone due to legal costs. He believes it's the right thing to do because his wife told him so.
