I don't hate it. I am just saying, exercise it wisely. If you vote to have a smaller government without a fire department, be ready for the consequences of that democracy.

Exactly how does this even apply to the size of the government? Department is still there, for those who pay. Guess I'll stop paying my bills/taxes to decrease the size of government anyways.

The people that live there should be ashamed. I don't care if the people didn't pay there are still things you do as a decent human being, which clearly the people that voted or even came up with something like this are not. If someone is bleeding on the side of the road you stop and help, you don't walk away because you are not profiting from it. The same goes for police and fire, you don't do it to make a profit, you do it because it is the right thing to do. I am so glad I live in a rural area where people still care about their neighbors and yes, our fire department is all volunteer and people don't make a dime off doing it, they do it because it is the right thing to do.

The fire department will rescue a person even if that person didn't pay, they just won't attempt to save property.

Don't try to shift the stupidity of these people as some indictment against "small government." These people voted not to fund the service, fully knowing the consequences. You would be going against the will of the people if the fire dept. did otherwise in this case, right?

Voting... it has consequences.

So they are fireman but you have to pay for what level of services you want ? $75 to answer a call, $100 to use water, $250 they will enter the home to save you ?

They are not a fire department, they are a business profiting off others misery.

They are NOT the COUNTY fire department at all. They are NOT the local fire department at all.

They are a city fire department, going outside of their own city, to help rural citizens that choose to pay for this optional service.

These county folk were too cheap and lazy to either fund their own fire department or start their own volunteer fire department. They don't deserve free help from the city in the county. If they wanted free firefighting they should have started their own volunteer department.

This guy fucking pwned the county from the comments

"I am a volunteer firefighter/EMT. My fire department is funded by donations and its own members. I live in a rural area. NONE of us would of ever let someone's house burn down. Our primary oath is to serve the community and protect human life and property. Not only is our country bankrupt, it is letting the almighty dollar ruin basic morals. Whatever happened to the good old days, where whole communities lined up handing buckets to help put out a neighbors fire. Have we lost human touch and care?"

You know, I understand all of the other arguments, I truly do. At the end of the day, I have to agree with you though. I could never watch a persons house burn to the ground if I had the means and ability to help put it out.

Nope...just the $75 fee that they knew of ahead of time....

Funny, I would bet that the city residents who actually pay for their service will agree with your last statement...You know, the ones who actually pay for their equipment and everything they need to fight a fire...

I'd like to hear from a professional fire fighter etc. I doubt the situation would have been much different if they paid the $75. Once started, trailers burn up pretty quickly. Spraying water on smoldering remains does little-to-nothing to save furniture etc. Stuff is ruined from the smoke/heat damage if not the fire itself. Soaking your furniture in water doesn't do it much good either.

IIRC, the fire dept is that of a city. These people are in the county. In most cases I doubt the FD can get there in time to do much. And didn't these people and their neighbors, who are quite close by judging from the photo, have a damn garden hose?

BTW: I find the claim that they don't have the people and equipment to respond to calls for those who don't pay a little odd given that they (FD) show up and hang around anyway.

They're not profiting; they're collecting a fee to cover expenses.

If they put out fires for anyone in the county regardless of whether that person paid the fee or not, no one would pay the fee. The fire department would not have enough funding to cover the county. The people in the city would be covered (since their property taxes go towards fire service), however people in the county (whose property taxes do not go towards fire service) would not have any protection at all.

The fire department shows up to make sure that the fire does not spread to people that did pay the fee.

Why should they risk being injured to help freeloaders who voted against funding their own fire department, then voted against supporting the city FD by not paying the fee?

They showed up to save lives and protect any other nearby property from those that do support them with the fee.

I assume that they show up to prevent the fire from spreading to a neighbors house/trailer that did pay.

Yeah, I don't get why the county hasn't started it's own fire dept. Old fire trucks are not that expensive and there are plenty for sale. Also, it's not hard to get federal grants for that stuff.

Check this link. They've got (pumper) fire trucks stating at $5k. There are plenty available for $20-30K.

how much will maintenance, parts, insurance, equipment, etc cost though?

If those country folk are like the ones where I live (not far away in Western NC) I would fully expect them to be more than capable of maintaining the truck and equip.

As regards costs of other equip I'm not sure what they need aside from hoses (if not already on truck) and fire suits.

It would of been a better story if all the citizens of the trailer park got up and put the fire out themselves as a community.

Even better if then they all said we dont need your fire department we will take care of our own.

I guess thats the point that I took from that mans comments I posted. Why dont we just help each other anymore?

Agreed. I am sure many just stood around and watched, video cameras rolling, though.

Fixed.

Democrats sure seem to hate democracy when it suits them.

Wrong you are. I'm a Democrat and I agree with what happened. I may not like it...but I agree that since they failed to pay for the service offered by the city, the city had no obligation to put out their fire. In fact, It's damned nice of the fire department to show up and make sure no lives were in danger. (as well as to protect the property of those who had paid the fees)

I didnt read past this. Unemployable fuck.

Hate you break it to you, but I'm working again. My unemployment ran out so I got a job. Making more than I did before. Bet that burns you up, you pathetic fuck.

Of course now I'm pissed off about it. Maybe I need to start attending some Occupy protests. Why the hell should I have to work for my money? Just give it to me goddammit! I'm an American, I shouldn't have to suffer the injustice of working for a living! Down with the 1%! More free shit for me!

I dont give a shit what you do. Im glad you found some menial task to occupy your time though. Try not to drink too much and wallow in what it is to be boberfett.

As for your second paragraph, lol coming from someone who sucked on the government tit for 1 1/2 years.

You probably think the neighboring city should pay for their groceries too, right? Doesn't everyone have a moral right to eat?

These people voted not to pay for their own fire service.

They also were too lazy to set up any kind of volunteer firefighting group.

A nearby city with smarter people who pay their taxes and aren't slacker leeches, out of the goodness of their hearts offered to share the firefighters they paid for, for a small annual fee of $75.

I'd agree that these morons should never have voted not to pay for firefighting services through taxes or the $75 fee, but it's their own stupid fault. They made their bed, they can watch it burn. Personal rights come with personal responsibility.

The county yokels were too cheap to pay the $75 but still want the services they refused to help fund.
Exactly right in principle, and well said. However, a single wide trailer burns completely in about 10 to 15 minutes and is low enough value that pumping it full of water would likely destroy it anyway. Particle board doesn't react well to being saturated, and it burns like oil once it gets going - especially in a single wide which essentially a wind tunnel once a fire gets going. I don't know that buying fire protection really makes sense in that case. Still, one can't have Personal rights come with personal responsibility pointed out too often. We seem to have forgotten that.

One thing this thread once again displays: If there's anything a liberal feels shouldn't be paid for at least partially by someone else, it's because he doesn't want it. Why pay $6.25 per month for fire protection? Some rich person should pay that so I get it for free!
