I've lived here for almost a decade now.

There are crappy areas and there are places so beautiful they'll take your breath away. Hikes to waterfalls and hidden rock pools. Stretches of warm, sandy beaches and gently swaying palm trees. Awesome food, incredible music, diverse art, and some really amazing people (there are good and bad eggs here as there are everywhere else).

I live in Venice Beach and absolutely love it here. Millionaires play chess with homeless people, everyone is mellow, and aside from the nuttiness/cheesiness/quirkiness of the Venice Beach boardwalk, it is a phenomenal place to live. I pay $667/month for my own bedroom and bathroom literally on the beach, and yesterday as I was taking a local run I bumped into Neve Campbell walking her dogs. I noticed her pups before I noticed her, heh.

It's a surreal place... But an incredibly beautiful one filled with wonder, opportunity, abundance, and endless possibilities. I love it here.

Go to 212 Pier. That's the name and the address, off main street. Great little coffee shop run by a very good friend of mine. If you see a shaggy-haired Indian dude, that's probably Guru, my friend. I don't think he hangs around there too much, though. If you're good looking, tell him Garth said you should get a free coffee and you might actually get one. :)

Pretty sure your apartment situation is quite unique.

Thanks for the tip! I bike along Main Street every day to my yoga class in Santa Monica. I don't drink coffee but would totally be down for a chai tea latte if they have those. We should have a little ATOT Westside LA meetup at some point. :)

It is. I got very, very lucky and scored a room in a place that should be going for much, much more. The apartment is rent-controlled, a 3bd/3ba, and I took over the room of a friend of mine who used to live there but moved out. Very grateful to live where I do and pay the rent that I pay.

Yeah, exactly. You should preface that next time.

I've been looking at studios and 1 bedrooms... Pretty hard to find anything that is not ultra ghetto for <$700, almost anywhere in LA.

you won't find anything < $700 that isn't ghetto.

if you're planning on spending less than 4 figures/month, expect to live with mexicans in lower income areas.

I'm not joking, and I'm not racist. This is just fact.

I'm honestly surprised at ATOT giving out serious advice/opinions. OP, considering how you are, LA seems like the complete total polar opposite of what you'd like, and some of the stuff you've been whining about in Seattle are probably going to be hundredfold worse in LA.

pretty true, there's a lot though in the 700-800 range that is pretty nice imo.

http://www.212pier.com/

They dont have the menu on the website, but I'm virtually positive they'll have chai.

Also, I live in Seattle now, so I'd have to attend any meetups in spirit only -- unless I'm visiting.

There are some that are not terrible in the 700-800 range. However, if you want to be near anything... $800+ is the standard for something beyond a super-efficiency economical studio in the ghetto. :\

I want to know how Bugi got a fucking 3 bed/3 bath apartment for $667 a month at Venice Beach. Fuck Nebraska

Of course this is different if you have one of the rooms of the three.

she's got a room in a 3br/ba house in venice. Rent on a 3br/3ba in that area would probably be north of 3k.

What are you looking for?

Basically, if you have a budget of 700/month, I'd look for a roommate. You're going to wind up living in not so nice locations on your own in that range.

What are you going to do there?

You know stuff is f'ing expensive as hell right?

If you want to go to school and transfer, look at Santa Monica College.

Sunshine, a lot of people, a lot more lindy hop, and yeah... I don't know. More possibilities than where I am now.

I'll likely stay in Seattle for now, but I'm going to be moving down there eventually.

Oh, and I would live with someone, but it's not worth it. If I am not moving in with someone I like then ... super cool ski instructor meme.

Yep... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fstWvbzV8E8
It doesn't get good until about 2:30 in. Some real flashy moves in there. It's a comp, so it's not respective of how everyone dances... but that's a lot of good freestylin'. (These people have danced with each other for years. They know eachother well.)

Well, LA does have a giant, giant dance community. Not sure if they do THAT kind of dancing though lol

Uh, they do. It's not as large as it was in the late 90's, early 2000's. But, it's still pretty large.
