having been in LA for 3 days...

shitty coffee
rude waiters
drive everywhere
lots of homeless people

but the climate is really nice (right now), it's really pretty, and everyone except waiters have been really friendly.

If you hate Seattle, you'll hate LA more. And you won't be able to get into any of the good schools there either.

LA = City where you need a car

WTF?

I hear that a lot. You must have a car to live in it. I also read that LA is not a 'city'. It's just a big ass area with a lot of cities inside of it, and that's why you need a car... because everything is so fucking far apart. If your friends live in Pasadena/Eagle Rock/Glendale/Basically-any-hill and you live in West LA, forget you ever met them?

If less people had cars then wouldn't the situation get better...? You know, more public transit and less congestion, et cetera?

I was considering biking everywhere, but... the place is so fucking big. If it's all flat then I wouldn't give a shit, but I don't think it likely is that... I haven't look at any topographical maps yet.

you first ;)

LA has mass transportation, the city/area as a whole just isn't super MT friendly unless you're limiting yourself to downtown because it's all so sprawled out.

I don't want to take a buss cross-town in NYC if I can avoid it, I couldn't imagine going from downtown LA out to the Valley.

Is LA flat at all or what? I'm just wondering because if it is relatively flat then I would actually bike a lot. (Biking on flat land is so fucking eaaassyyy)

LA sucks. The air is filthy, the traffic is absolute MURDER every fucking day of your life, even on weekends. You need $150,000 per year to survive in an apartment and have any money left over to save. Nobody speaks english. Nobody takes vacations due to fear of being fired. Everyone wants to live there for some re-fucking-tarded reason that I can't figure out. Stay away. I'm leaving as soon as I get a chance.

depends where you're going.

my impression of it was that it was like a series of interconnecting valleys.

Like I said before, you will hate LA. It's a city where there's importance on image and status, you are the bottom in both categories.

You should try SF bay area since it's full of homeless and weird people. Many gay guys for you as well.

Highly depends on where you are and where you are going. If you are going to be a bike person, you still need a car, but at least you could possibly bike to work if possible.

Still think you'll be eaten alive by LA.

The LA area has everything. That's why so many people live here. You can live in the smug areas if you want or move to a city that's the complete opposite. So many different cultures with a huge variety of foods to eat. The best looking women. How many places in the world can you go to the desert, mountains, and beach all in the same day? You don't have to live in the city of LA to experience the area. There's many better places to choose from.

Yes, that is one of the reasons I am considering it. However, considering financially I won't have the $$$$$ to live in some of the places then it would seem as if there are much fewer options available.

I will never give up my car. I'm always going to keep it. It's just that if I can bike then I will. I will likely bike more often than use my car just because of parking.

Forget to mention that he should go watch LA Story. It's twenty years old, but it does make fun of LA in a more or less loving sort of way.

we have cars because my 20 mile drive to work takes me about 30-45 minutes on average, the public transit takes 2+ hours. I could probably move closer to work, but I live right down the street from the 110 in Torrance/Harbor City area and I have access to a lot of places from here relatively quickly on our freeway system if traffic isn't to congested. The big deal with traffic is most people just aren't considerate enough nor educated enough it proper driving techniques. Not giving enough distance, waiting to long to brake, not being in the proper lane, taking to long to merge, merging to late, slowing down to merge in the wrong situation, etc etc etc. Wish they'd have used the existing freeway infrastructure as a way to hook LA into high speed rail. Though I don't think anyone here really thinks all that far ahead.

And yes LA is one huge area. There is LA City of course, but really most of LA county is what most of us would consider LA.

Other than the traffic you just described NYC perfectly and the same reasons I'm itching to get out.

well i grew up here. lived in the bay area for about 5 years .

went to UCLA. live here again , work in what is becoming "silicon beach" because there are a lot of startups discovering that some geeks actually like the sun, gorgeous women and nightlift in west LA / santa monica.

That said here is LA for you.

if you live east of the downtown LA its pretty much a lot of mexicans, fobby asians . north east of LA isl ike where every porn movie is shot and the san fernando valley. i've been out there a few times and well it sucks.

north west of LA is places like oxnard. my cousin works there and hates it so much that he rents 2 apartments. one for friday saturday and sunday. i'm serious, he just rented an apartment in west LA just for the weekend.

i grew up in the "southbay" which is just north of long beach and just south of inglewood / compton areas. its probably the most mixed area in socal and very middle classy. but its not all one race like say orange county. lets just say i'm biased but i think its the most well rounded part of LA county (i'm talking like torrance, gardena, redondo/hermosa beaches).

Anyway, it depends on what you are into. I lived in the bay area for a while near oakland across the bridge from SF. comparatively maybe theres a little more "Character" to some of the areas, but i tired of hte hippies and false intellectual wannabes. silicon valley is a cock fest with ugly women and nothing much to do at night. but if you like hiking and shit well apparently its a nice place to be (i dont really hike or mountain bike or any of that stuff so it means nothing to me).

one thing about LA at least in contrast to the bay area (and i tend to think you either love one or the other a lot) you don't get people who make snide but somewhat veiled comments about say how uncultured you are as much in LA. I've been told its a lot more like NY in this way where in LA we will just tell you you look like shit, are fat and need to get to the gym. LA is a lot more blunt. its like in the movie swingers. people here may notice you look broke ass and think you are aloser. they may tell this to you flat out. they will honk at you in traffic . sometimes justified other times not. but they are always going to be willing to honk at you.

LA on the other hand... if you are into and i have to say this. vegas level of clubs, basically the electronic dance music capital of the west coast and possibly america, unrivaled selection of restaurants to eat at, beaches to lounge at , etc. well LA s your place. all these things cost money. i've lived at various levels of the income spectrum since college and i'd say LA isn't really all that fun unless you make at least $50k. i'd say it gets really comfortable at 100... if you want to raise a family well make even more.

and the traffic is not so great, but i guess it depends on where you are from. compared to say portland, yes its horrible. compared to the bay area / sf, its i'd say slightly worse but its really not that much worse unless you happen to be a moron and live a billion miles from work becuase you HAD to buy a house and it was the only "affordable" place to buy one. so yeah if you fall into the real estate buying trap like 90% of socal had well you could have a self inflicted traffic problem. otherwise its not the end of the world. buy a nicer car, one with satelite radio. get an automatic transmission, work slightly offset hours. its fine.

but yeah, there is endless amounts of stuff to do here. i am not sure its the best city in the world to raise a family and there are definitely some ghetto ass areas (moreso than the bay area in my experience, but well LA is a really really really big place). I suppose LA is so big it has a lot of "range". theres some great great areas, great looking women, great places to be at night. on the other hand theres some shitholes, tons of fat and, i mean disgustingly fat people , and if you are broke its no fun. and we dont have an NFL team. oh well.

also that said, i am not sure the women in most cities even compare. when i was going to school compared to say a "hot girl" in the bay area, i every other girl walking down bruin walk at ucla would have been a "hot girl" in SF. possibly more than every other girl.

so yeah, LA if you can figure out how to make it work for you CAN be awesome. you probalby want to be an extrovert. you probably want a nice car. you better like partying.

Hot women... bikinis and eye candy during the winter... Snow Board, Sand Dune Racing, Surfing, and Wine Tasting all on the same day... Many types of cultural foods... great weather (I rather deal with earthquakes than Tornados!)... you never run out of things to do, unless you run out of money just go to the beach and people watch...:awe:

Information like this is what I'm looking for. Although, more than that would be nice.

I feel like I don't know enough about it.
