First off... since when does some post in a discussion area qualify to be treated as a news story? This actually manages to one-up Fox's "People say..." line and go into new territories of anecdotal evidence. Who knows... maybe this is the first report of it, and the Reuters, AP, and UPI stories are soon to follow. But as it is, a bunch of you are getting your panties in a bunch about something some person posted in a community site.

But fine, let's pretend this is actually a news item. If you can't do the job, you shouldn't take it... simple enough. Some muslims and some jews will not handle pork products; but no one put a gun to their heads and told them to work a job that involves handling pork. What's next? muslim bartenders who won't serve alcohol, jewish waiters who refuse to serve cheeseburgers and lobster dishes, hindu deli workers who won't make roast beef sandwiches, and so on?

But none of this necessitates some of the comments made, both here and in the discussion at the linked page. Those who are acting so incensed about this can't possibly be responding to the delayed scanning of a frozen pepperoni pizza. Rather, it seems like at least some of them feel they've been given a handy excuse that they can use to air some prejudices.

Muslim Brotherhood behind Minnesota airport taxi dispute

Jeee, kinda like the christain church influencing pharmacists not to pass out birth control or the morning after pill?

What's the diff? Nothing, they are both the same. Get a clue and get over it.

Both employee's that can't do their job because of faith concerns should quit immediately and find a job that won't interfere with their faith or working conditions.

I guess the work application is going to get more added questions...

i don't think that's a fair comparison. abortion pills vs. pepperoni? come on now... and you don't have to be religious to be pro-life.

Sure it is. They are both perfectly legal products which stores are allowed to sell to individuals in accordance with the law. A given employee's personal beliefs / morals SHOULD have no bearing on a LEGAL and LAWFUL exchange between their employer and a customer. The employer is paying the employee to facilitate that exchange.

If an employee has personal beliefs / morals that conflict with their job description (facilitating the exchange between the employer and their customers), they should not be working in that capacity.

IMHO they should either voluntarily quit, or be fired for pulling this crap. (Yes that goes for all of the above: Bacon, Pepperoni Pizzas, Pork products, Birth Control Pills, Plan B, Condoms, etc...)

At the Target store on E. Lake Street, a cashier wearing a hijab looked uncomfortable when I showed up at the cash register with a frozen pepperoni pizza.

Hijab should be banished as a symbol of oppression. Why else does she need fear a pepperoni pizza except through radical indoctrination? The ?religion of peace? is here in our country. What radicals outside America fail to do, radicals inside shall succeed at doing unless we stop it.

Not wanting to touch a pepperoni pizza makes you a radical?

Good God, a shopper has been mildly inconvenienced!

Call out the pitchfork and torch brigade!

Umm...yea, being scared to touch a frozen food makes you pretty far out there....or would you consider that normal behaviour?

O.K. so anything you don't consider "normal" is RADICAL.

Got it.

So I guess it's cool if some cashier refuses to sell condoms because he/she is a hardcore Catholic? I can tell you that person would be fired without a second thought and without a news story.

Muslims don't deserve special treatment, if you work in a service industry you better be prepared to deal with all that that entails.

No one "Refused" to sell anything. The cashier simply called someone else to handle the pork tainted pizza, and the customer was on his way.

No, but pork products are legal, and she knew the store sold them when she took the job. She didn't have to take the job if the working conditions offended her.

Target stays in business by serving their customers, not by catering to special demands of their employees beyond normal, fair and reasonable conditions of their employement that may conflict with their customers' needs. The company has a right to expect their cashiers to serve all customers equally and fairly. If this woman can't do the job for which she was hired, she should keep her personal hangups away from Target and their customers and find another job.

No, I didn't say that. But being scared to touch a frozen pizza is pretty damn weird. Stop being so dense.

No, it's not "pretty damn weird", it's because of her religious beliefs.

Good God somebody has been fired who due to religious beliefs cannot do the job they were hired to do===fire them!!!
I agree. Target should be considered perfectly within their rights to fire her as a cashier.

This has nothing to do with accepting someones religious beliefs. Again, stop being so dense.

Religious beliefs and employment rights have nothing to do with this issue. If they did, then I would start a new religion around the belief that work is a sin.

I never mentioned the christian church nor do take issue with someone being fired for a job they knowingly took, but I am seeing the so called secular liberals hypocrisy when they cower before radical Islamists who put the fear in their hearts to the point of excusing their actions even when it directly violates the separation of church and state.

You can punch the christian straw man all you want, but remember the radical muslim one punches back.

Can someone (preferably someone who sides with the cashier) explain to me how this is ANY different than the Kroger pharmacist who refused to fill the abortion pill order due to her religious beliefs.

No, thanks to the right-wingers that will keep the borders wide open so that more muslims can come here. Look up the immigration policies of your hero Ronald Reagan, the Bush families close ties to Saudi Arabia, etc.
Oh, and in other news, San Francisco is fine with the idea that you will never visit.

I am blathering because you seem to be too stupid to understand that the open borders policy and admitting a million legal immigrants to this country every year isn't working too well.
Yeah, I'm sure it's all the ACLU's fault.
