Target Cashier Won't Handle Pork

The other day, I got a call from someone who said that an employee at the Target store downtown refused to run his bacon through a scanning machine. He was mighty upset, arguing that the cashier had "no right to work as a cashier at Target" if she wasn't prepared to swipe his groceries.

But he was a little vague on the details, so I decided to check it out myself. At the Target store on E. Lake Street, a cashier wearing a hijab looked uncomfortable when I showed up at the cash register with a frozen pepperoni pizza. She immediately called for help, and another employee rang up the pizza and placed it in the basket.

Anyone from Minneapolis? Have you experienced this first hand?

Naturally, I think this is ridicilous that Target, or any other store, would allow such things to happen.

One of the readers, Leylla, left a comment on the page that pretty much sums up what I believe as well:

As a Muslim myself i completely understand where she is coming from however, I do believe that things have to change when you move to a new country or adopt a new religion. You can't pick and choose what you will do at a grocery store where there is all sorts of Haraam-unlawful things- I think its wrong for Target to accept such behaviour either do the job or get a job where you don't have to deal with 'pork'. This is America not Bahraine or Egypt.

Minneapolis has a huge muslim population as do some parts of Michigan.

Target should fire her immediately obviously.

This is just like the pharmacists who refuse to dispense meds on religious or moral grounds. Such barriers prevent the person from doing their job.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Muslim Brotherhood or some other organization of a like manner is influencing these people to act in this manner just like with the no alcohol in the taxi incident, in order to provoke a conflict where there was none before.

She took the job knowing she'd have to handle everything in the store. If you have a problem handling certain types of food, don't work as a cashier in a store that sells it.

In most states, a person under 21 can't sell alcohol.

Therefore no one under 21 should be hired as a cashier at any store that sells beer?

Good God somebody has been fired who due to religious beliefs cannot do the job they were hired to do===fire them!!!

Eh? Christians are called radicals for much less. I think in an open and free society if you are going to adhere to your religion to the point where you cant even perform the most basic function of your job. You are a radical.

You're using some bad logic there. One is a legal issue that will be enforced by the state, while the other is a personal issue disagreeing with the store's policy.

minneapolis is going to be the first city under sharia (spelling wrong i'm sure) law. we owe it all to the aclu and other types. muslim cabbies there won't give someone a ride if they have alchohol or a pet dog (even a seeing eye dog). again, thanks to CAIR and the ACLU for all their support. Don't see the newly elected muslim congressman saying anything about these issues. put minneapolis on my list of cities never to visit, along with San Fran.

So I guess it's cool if some cashier refuses to sell condoms because he/she is a hardcore Catholic? I can tell you that person would be fired without a second thought and without a news story.

Muslims don't deserve special treatment, if you work in a service industry you better be prepared to deal with all that that entails.
