I started smoking infrequently about 3 months ago. I'll go days without one and then I'll have a cigarette or two. My favorite is Prime Time-Cherry Flavored. (Yeah, it's a little cigar thingy, but that's what I like.)

Smoking a disgusting habit. They recently banned the use of all tobacco products on the grounds of my office complex and I think it's great. I hate the smell of it. Not to mention to people who take an hour or more of breaks during the day to suck on those damn things.

I just don't get it. They are bad for you. They make you smell. They yellow your teeth. What's the appeal? There are so many resources to help you quit, so man up and quit. For whatever reason, smoking always seemed like a low-class habit to me.

Also, a big congrats to those who quit. The people who love you will like not having you watch to die of some horrible disease.

I've always seen it as a weakness of character to be honest. (Hear me out lol)

I've never taken a puff, so obviously can't speak from experience, but basically, the first time you smoke a cigarette, you don't like it, that's pretty much a given, right? So it must be some sort of peer pressure, or desire to be 'all grown up' or whatever, that drives you to smoke the second one. And so on.

I've never felt the need for that, so haven't ever smoked.

Plus obviously there's the fact you smell. Bad. And all the other stuff. Being young, the health thing doesn't scare me yet, but all the other things, the yellowing, the nasty affects on your skin, the sheer stench, the fact you turn into an arse if you don't get your fix (not applying to casual smokers there, obviously...) and the sheer cost. It just seems so pointless.

Also, in my opinion, it makes women look nasty. Well, if they're hot, they're hot, but they're less hot with a cigarette.

My father bought nicoderm (sp?) but he fell off it and that was 2-3 years ago. I want to try and get him trying something else if possible. His health is important to me and if he wants to see grandkids I think it would be important to him, too. BTW he has been smoking for something in the range of 30 to 35 years.

Get your father on Chantix. It's a pill taken for a 12 week course, and the best anti-smoking remedy to come down the pike in a long time.

Google search it for details.

This is how I feel too. It seems like a weakness to me. And a waste of money.

I just started Chantix last Saturday! It's my last resort.
Nothing else has worked for me, Gum, Patches, Nicotrol Inhalers, nothing.

A friend's sister and her Aunt have been on it. They're both hardcore smokers and they're kicking it. Plus, the pill kinda dulls your appetite so they don't feel like snacking to make up for the time they used smoking so no weight gain.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!

So can we not talk about cars because there are people under 16 here? Can't discuss voting because it's illegal for minors also? How about discussing beer preferences? Where do we draw the line?

hey, i didn't make the rules. if anyone has a link to the thread i'm talking about, that would be great.

Nah, I wasn't venting at you. :)

It's more that the moderation on this forum occasionally seems biased.

Not taking the time to read through all the posts here, (amazing how much going to college cuts into my surfing time...dammit!) but...

I smoke. I have for most of the past 35 years. I quit 3 years ago...stayed quit for about 18 months, then let a little stress get the better of me, (stupid ass) and I started again..Smoked for about 8 months, and quit...again...that lasted about 2 1/2 months, and (yep, you guessed it) I fell off the wagon again. That was in May 06. I NEED to quit again...I KNOW it's bad for me, (although after all these years, I doubt quitting will really make a difference) and I KNOW how badly it stinks...My wife quit 8 years ago, and rides my ass all the time about it...<phew...you stink!>

That being said, I smoke Marlboro Red's. "Only" about a half-pack per day...give or take, depending on the day. SHOULD be easy to quit again...but it's not. Fvcking things are ADDICTING! and I have an addictive personality...which makes quitting that much harder. Anything I do, it's either all or nothing....and I tend to be VERY resistant to any change...;)

being a discusting habbit is all relational to your upbringing, so i wont debate that. just let me say i'm 100% positive there are people out there who find your habbits just as discusting, should they be banned? i completely understand it is privitie property and the owners can do whatever they want since they own it, thats cool, but hopefully there is a sidewalk or some other public place where your smoking coworkers can go take a break. i dont like people that take frequent breaks to smoke either and i smoke. if your company allows you a certain amount of time in a day for breaks/lunch, you should take only that amount of time (whether or not you break it up into 5min intrevals) and make sure it is logged.

so they are bad for. that is their decision to make. if they are willing to accepts the risks for the benifits, then thats fine by me (and should be by you, assuming they arent hurting you with it in any way (read: smoking inside or in an area you need to be). I agree, most cigs smell like ass, but i really enjoy the smell of certain brands. and i bet if someone smoked a pipe you would also enjoy the lovely aroma. lots of things yellow your teeth, have a good dentist or use some whiting solution is all i have to say to that. the appeal is differnt for many people. for some it is the effect, for some it is the pressure, for some it is just something they never stopped doing and dont know why they do it, for others, they simply enojy everything about it (read: me, i love the smell, taste, and feeling of everything i smoke. if i didnt, i wouldnt smoke it. there are plenty of things i wont smoke, mainly marlboros...YUCK!) low class? ehh, i can see how you can see that. lots of people you see in public smoke nasty cigs, and i agree, a lot of them have 'low class' jobs such as waiters/waitresses, etc. maybe that is where your steryotype comes from? but i assure you, there are plenty of high class people who smoke...if i remember correectly...JFK ordered a big box of Cuban cigars for himself before he banned them, lol.

stopping smoking will definitly decrease risk of disease, no doubt, so congrats to those who do stop. but if your family members really love you, they will try to understand your situation and help you. NOT bug you to stop smoking every day and try to make it illegal.

They're more than half tobacco, so of course they have nicotine.

Cloves are the only cigarettes I can stand the smell of (and then, only from a distance.) Everything else is nasty.

i wish i could put it more lightly, but you are speaking straight out of your ass, plain and simple. you know NOTHING about smoking...how can you make such rash judgements when you know nothing about them other than what you see on TV and read on anti-smoking websites?

the first smoke you dont like? WTFH are you talking about!? i loved the first thing i ever smoked (drew state acid) and since then ive only smoked what i enjoyed. if i remeber correctly the first cigarette i smoked (since acids are cigars) was a camel turkish gold and i love it then and love them now. although, i agree, there are a lot of people who smoke out of peer pressure when they are younger and form the habbit. i dont think this is a good way to get started, but it happens. for the people who didnt like the first thing they smoked it is probably becuase they smoked something crappy like a Marlboro. Smoking is just like food; there are lots of different types and styles, some you like, some you dont.

read my previous post for an argument on smelling, teeth, etc.

as far as being a jerk when you dont get your fix: people that take something that far into being an addiction have problems. either they have a personality that forms addictions quickly or they just formed this one over time just like many people do with all kinds of crap (such as medicines, drugs, alcohol, etc.) they should seek help. i've been smoking since i was 17 and i can say i never had an urge to smoke so much that i would do a lot of things i normally wouldnt to get a smoke. hell, i've never really had an urge to speak of. if i dont feel like smoking, i dont smoke. sometimes it could be months before my next smoke...or minutes...it all depends. if someone asked me to stop smoking forever i could do it with much ease, assuming there is a point i care about.
