Didn't LucasArts do the original Monkey Island games? Did Telltale Games buy the rights? Did any of the old crew work on the new game?

As per wiki, Telltale Games is developing the game under license from LucasArts and quite a few developers who were involved in the first two Monkey Island games are actually here as well mate, like Dave Grossman the head of the development team.

More details about the development of the game here:

Excellent! Thank you!

Beat the game yesterday. It was pretty fun and definitely had the spirit of the old games. The puzzles weren't very difficult, but they were more logical than puzzles in previous entries.

I'd say the first episode lasts 3-4 hours depending on how slow you are. Maybe less if you turn on the hint system.

Good to hear. Definitely purchasing this tonight.

I've been playing it intentionally slow so I don't finish it too fast.

What is the hint system? I'm not aware of a hint system, that should mean I'm not using it, yes?

The hint system is on by default, so unless you turned it off then it is activated. You can change the frequency of hints, from 0-4. I put mine to 0 from the start of the game, because I didn't want any hints.

Also, the hint system is supposed to be subtle, so you may not be aware of it. Does Guybrush ever give you suggestions or something?

I have to check then. Now that you mention it I vaguely remember seeing a 'hint' slider in the settings. I'm pretty sure I played with it a bit and turned it down although I don't think I turned it down all the way. I can't remember if Guybrush gave me any suggestions, although if it's included in the words he's saying whenever I use an item or clicked on stuff then I would have no idea that it's actually a hint.

I have no clue how the system works. I just know they said it's "subtle" and not like a big box pops up and tells you to use A on B.

Steam is so convenient!

First thing I did was turned hints off, and having a blast :) Looks very nice at 1920x1200.

Yeah, it comes out on the fifth.

The Special Edition features new character art and hand-painted environments in the style of the original, presented in 1080i widescreen (1920 x 1080 resolution). It also features a re-recorded and re-mastered score, and the principal voice artists from The Curse of Monkey Island read the previously unspoken lines, with Dominic Armato as Guybrush, Alexandra Boyd as Elaine, and Earl Boen as LeChuck.

The interface itself is streamlined, hiding the verb table and inventory that previously took up the lower part of the screen. These, including the nine-option verb table from the enhanced editions of the game, can be pulled up as a menu, while verbs can also be selected by cycling through pre-set commands.[14] Another new feature is the three-level hint system, which (at the third level) presents a bright yellow arrow showing the player where to go.

The developers also added a close-up of Spiffy, the dog in the Scumm Bar, that was deleted from the original versions due to space considerations, despite appearing on the back of the box.

It is possible to switch between the 256 color enhanced and the new version of graphics.

Is this a game my wife would enjoy? She likes puzzle games that aren't too complicated with lots of keys and shortcuts and junk.

Try the demo. Link to is a few posts up.

It isn't a normal puzzle solving game, however. You usually use wacky means to achieve your goal.

This definitely feels like a Monkey game but I'm not too fond of the 3D graphics... the style just seems way too cute and cartoonish (and also, kind of bland and generic), even more-so than Curse of Monkey Island.

The controls could also use some work, they should have given us traditional point n click, not wasd or that radial mouse control thing.

Dom Armato's voice work is top notch, I can't imagine Guybrush without his voice anymore.

In my opinion Monkey 3 had the graphics about perfectly where they should be. 3d has come a long ways, but unfortunately it still can't compare to a hand painted 2d scene in terms of detail and richness, not when you have to make sure your game still runs on the lowest common denominator system out there. Granted, you may still prefer 1 or 2 for the nostalgia or art style, but the pixellation at the extremely low resolutions they ran at is a little bit hard to ignore in this day and age, which is why I hope they re-make Monkey 2 eventually, as well.

That said, the I got used to the 3d graphics after about 10-15 minutes.

Control scheme could be better, but at least it isn't that horrible thing they had in 4 (unless I'm remembering wrong).

Yeah, I would have been happy (maybe happier) with 2d high def artwork.

And the control is much better than the last 3d game, Escape from Monkey Island, as you said.

I'm really excited about the Secret remake, voice acting + updated graphics should give the game a completely new feel and it's been so long that I've probably forgotten some of the puzzles already.

I've played some more Tales, it's really nice, it feels like Monkey 5 and not just some spin-off, there's some decent dialogue here, it's too bad Guybrush and LeChuck are the only characters that are well designed visually, everyone else (WTF happened to voodoo lady?) feel bland and uninspired (even Elaine).

***SLIGHT SPOILERS***
I hope Murray makes a return, he is mentioned in the creepy shack when you look at a candle.

Eh - I guess most people didn't enjoy/play Grim Fandango (1998) - pretty much the same 3d style in this adventure series.

Note that Tales of Monkey Island happens *after* Monkey Island 5 :D

And it might be coming to iPhone

Source

Next week, LucasArts will release The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition for the Xbox 360 and PC. And, according to what we're pretty really sure is a strong hint on Twitter, it looks like the game will eventually be coming to iPhones as well. LucasArts twitpic'd a wallpaper for the game (via VG247), with this subtle accompanying tease:

"For our Monkey fans - an iPhone sized wallpaper. No reason. Wink wink nod nod."

No reason, indeed. The point-and-click adventure game would make perfect sense on Apple's iPhone, so it's not a big surprise to see the game released on the platform. Still, this isn't technically confirmed, so we'll have to wait and see when LucasArts decides to make it official.
